So Furioso is more or less finished..

Might end up sticking on some transfers (gotta find em) and maybe a purity seal or 3 at some point...but for now this is him!!!

Also might freehand some writing on his little pachmenty bits - however gotta have a bit of practice before I attempt...probably one of my better painted models to date, super happy with how he turned out.

C&C welcomes and appreciated!

Thanks!!!

Painting competition coming up at my local GW... Tossing up between this and my soul grinder as an entry for one of the categories...if i pick this I should probably do something about transfers before I submit it!

Also looking at some other furiosos it appears the fist on this dude isnt the normal furioso one (I bought him on ebay)....didn't even notice until now!

So I haven't posted in here for nearly a month! Woops!
After the escalation finished at my local store I took a few weeks away from painting, had a few other bits and pieces on and didn't really feel like painting most evenings.

I entered my priest on bike in a painting contest, and he won the category he was entered into which I am happy about!

So I know I started an attack bike after my dreadnought was done, that is not quite finished (Don't have photos). The bike is more or less done the riders are still mostly not complete, I am sure that will get there eventually.

After looking at my shelf for a while I decided I would have a go at painting some orks, I have a little bit up there but most of the ork models are vehicles, which I have/had no idea what to do with. Bit the bullet and grabbed a killa kan and just started throwing paint around. Actually painted the entire model Warplock Bronze and then Leadbelcher and added other colours from there. I more or less just have the base and some weathering to do - I have no idea how to do weathering so Ill find some guides on that to get it done!
Spoiler:

It might seem odd to make the entire thing silver if I planned to make3 so much of it black again - when I started painting I didn't know which clan I was going to go (had to check to make sure they didn't have any special clan rules or anything) but eventually chose goffs. First time attempted a checkered pattern, quite happy with how it turned out!

Next up as I decided I would temporarily avoid trying to paint weathering I decided to start painting up a test Boy model. pretty much only have the skin finished at the moment, but since his clothes will be black there isn't actually heaps left to do on him!
Spoiler:

Hopefully once I have done these 2 I find the motivation to finish the attack bike that is just so close to done, was a nice change to paint something not wearing power armour though!

So I finished my test ork boy.

Fairly happy with how he turned out, i am not a fan of the straps, paint always seems to rub off them :S. Had a go at weathering on the shoulder pad too.

Spoiler:

As always C&C welcomed and appreciated!

Been a bit quiet again, I nearly finished 5 boyz but kind of lost the drive to do much painting the past month or 2.
I have had an old chaos landraider that was donated to me by a mate about 10 years ago now I think it was. It has just been sitting in my scrap plastic bitz box/occasionally chucked onto the table to be used as ruins.

After playing a game with my orks and deciding I wanted a battle wagon, I deicded id try and save money and bash it together out of existing stuff I had. I forgot how fun building ork vehicles is, can really just go crazy.

Front View - ignore that white USB drive you see sticking it its just to hold the engine bay up to the correct height since it currently is not glued.
Driver is from the stompa box, stuck onto a hatch from a space marine tank.
The actual little cabin thing is made from random scrap bits of plastic/bitz from various tank kits.

Side View 1

Top View
The floor that is extended out the back is just glued together bits of sprue.

Back View
The ladder and rails are made up of bits of sprue that I have tried to make circular using the mould line removal tool.

The Engine bay on its own
Made up for some rhino tank hatches/doors. The grill is actually one of the bits from the bottom of the land raider kit.
The mast thing on front is from the stompa box.

Top view with some boys for scale

Side view with some boyz for scale.

So this is it so far, didn't get any progress shot for you unfortunately.
I can't do much else without visiting a hobby store and buying some plasticard either. Also I think I want some big wheels for the front as the engine bay sticks out quite far and looks a bit odd.
I also have to build all the weapons yet, havent even decided where they will all go.

ANy feedback is really appreciated!

So had a bit of a break from the whole painting thing - got a bit painted out I guess!
That coupled with the price rises from GW (Seriously increasing devs for $23 AUD a box?!) have kind of turned me off a bit, its clearly not going to get any cheaper any time soon!

Couple of years ago now I bought some Warmachine to play because a couple of mates were also into it - well one of my 40k mates has recently gone back to his Warmachine so I decided I would too! I couldnt remember what I had but after digging out the box I discovered I had a fair bit, with only a couple of models painted (1 heavy jack and 1 warcaster).

Over the weekend I did some painting on some other models, I don't have photos of my completed models and the few photos I took of the stuff I was painting are pretty ordinary (don't have the light box set up currently) but I thought I would attach them anyway.

One of the dudes from the black 13th, photo is crap, finished except for maybe his base - not sure if I want to put grass on it or not.

Start of my Cyclone heavy jack - I am trying to break the habit of "Games Workshop Highlighting" - edge highlighting everywhere. Instead I am going for highlights that would be there if the light was coming from the top-ish. I feel I have somewhat achieved this with my blues, it still has some work to do though I am not 100% happy with it (again poor photo)...

I will set up the light box again in the next few days and hopefully have some better photos for you all!

Well, it's been a good 9 months since I touched this blog - I also have done very little painting in that time (finished the Warmachine warjack from the previous post - almost finished the Black 13th, and started a Stormwall).

I have since started a collection of yet another thing - got myself onto some Horus Heresy. The hardest part of all this was deciding a legion TBH, I kind of had my heart set on Emperors Children - then after reading some stuff decided they seemed likr arrogant gakkers, ended with Alpha Legion - a large part of this was an idea I had in my head of how easy they would be to paint (turns out my initial idea worked no where near as well as intended).

My first idea was silver basecoat and then topped with a few layers of the blue GW shade - turns out way too dark. Played around with various combinations of blue and green shades and the blue glaze, everything just came out a bit dark for my liking. While all this was going on, I was in the middle of off loading my MTG collection, after selling lots of cards as singles, I took the rest to my local hobby shop and traded the lot in for an airbrush! They also got in new air brush paints the day I got it, turns out they were the Badger Minitaire range. I had spotted one scheme online at some point where someone had used the ghost tints so thought why not give it a go and picked up a bottle of the plasma fluid ghost tint. After stuffing around with lots of variations, I narrowed it down to 3 and created a poll here on dakka. After a couple of days I had a massive 1 reply to went with that choice (happens to be the same choice a few RL mates chose).

Here is a quick (not very good quality) snap of my test models:

And here is a much higher quality image that i used for the voting bit:

After deciding on a scheme, instead of doing the sensible thing and starting on some troops, I dived right in and started on a contemptor, here are the finished results:

(Should have cropped these a bit before uploading, at the default swize they are slightly blurry - open them in gallery and litterally zoom in like one little line on the zoomy thing and it will look a lot sharper).
So this guy turned out a bit more blue than I was hoping for in the end. This is a leadbelcher base, washed with Drakenoth Nightshade then sprayed with some Plasma Fluid ghost tint through the air brush (had the mains ilver bitys/guns etc masked).
Worth noting the paint doesnt seem to stick quite as well to the ghost shade as it would to other paints, as such I have to be a bit wary which bits I pick the model up from. Haven't decided on a varnish yet, I do have a matte varnish at home but it takes away some of the shine from the Ghost Tint.
The base is plain and simple - wanted this army to be vaguely quick to smash out as I have a habit of spending a fair bit on models(my blood angels tactical squad took so damn long).

That be my only finished Alpha Legion model so far, however I have made a solid start on the Veteran Tactical Squad:

Again not great quality but enough to get the idea, they have had the armour done (added a green glaze sprayed through the air brush at around 45 degree angle so that when looking down on the models they are more greeen than blue, and when looking from the bottom more blue than green). Happy with how the armour turned out more so than the dreadnought this time around, also discovered that the plasma fluid can be brushed on (I missed a couple of bits when air gunning it seemed). The silver so far is just base coated - need to shade and highlight it, do the eyes, paint the guns, paint the bases. Decided to go for doing all 10 dudes at once (I am normally a 5 at a time kind of painter).

In the post I have the head hunter bits to put together 10 head hunters.
I also have 10 cataphracti terminators that need some painting - These will be built as the Alpha Legion special termies (just waiting for my volkite chargers to arrive in the mail).
Then I just have the 2 HQ and a dual fist contemptor left to go and that will be all my Alpha Legion models sorted (sounds like lots, but I can get the armour for 10 guys done in nearly no time at all!)

First let me say... Hello Alpharius ( we are all Alpharius ).

I have noticed in the time you started your blog it is apparent that you have improved, Your Blood Angels have and are coming along nicely.

There are alot of recipes for AL. I went with a blue with a green wash. However I do like the ' Mottling ' you seem to get from your ' ghost tint' Most notable on the contemptors legs.

If your into HH your going to need more figures. The squads can get large and the variety of loadouts is endless.

Hey! Thanks for thw feedback and thanks for noticing the progression!

Yeah the legs mottling could well be the wash tbh... Didn't go on nicely.

I know I will definitely need more troops. Plan to be adding a 20 man tactical blob shortly... Eventually want to have enough so I don't have to be stuck with pride of the legion if I don't want to be.

Just finished those 10 vets this evening. Will take photos tomorrow.

Yay! Got some more photos of the tactical squad.
gave the whole picture collage thing another go for funsies:

Like all the photos I take with my new camera - seems a bit of a zoom in helps fix the blurriness - really need to have a look into this, might mean taking photos at a greater distance and cropping them down in future!
Quite happy with how these guys turned out -bases are still a bitch though, in future I am going to cover them so none of the Plasma Fluid gets sprayed onto it.

Its raining so no more undercoating atm - luckily I had a second contemptor already sprayed that I can work on.

They look good.

Not sure if your done basing but they are too plain. Your models are too good to have plain bases. Basing can break or make a figure. There are alot of good tutorials if you need ideas.

Agree with the plain bases But I have to say I like the blue tint to the armor, very cool effect and the oily metal effect for the trim works very well.

Thanks for all the comments/feedback guys!

Yeah, the bases are very plain aren't they, I thought I could get away with it but perhaps not. Luckily they aren't the hardest thing to fix up later. My local hobby shop guy tells me he is getting in some new bits and pieces that sound like they could be useful for basing, so I will wait and see what they end up being. If I an avoid going down the glue sand on base and paint it path like I have done with all my models since forever then I will be happy! (Any pointers about basing that doesn't involve glueing sand I would be interested in TBH).

That Plasma Fluid Ghost Tint really has made my painting life so easy! I reckon the time it took me to paint 10 alpha legion tactical squad dudes would have been comparable to the time I spend just doing the red on the armour of 5 Blood Angels tactical squad dudes.

Not nearly enough love for this thread, I've only just stumbled across it and I must say your BA are amazing.

That battle wagon is super cool and now some awesome looking Alpha Legion! Looking forward to seeing more.

Hahaha yay, thread love!
Gotta remember to keep a closer eye on it now its sparking some more interest.

I stuck together my other 5 Termies last night (minus guns). Can't wait for the Volkites to arrive! I suspect I may get bored in the meantime and start working on the Praetor model tbh. Do I want it with a chian fist? or do I want to try and hack his hand off and replace it with a PF?!

The chain fist is useful if you find yourself up against a dread or in need of crumping some vehicles.

Yup, going to the chain fist, the effort of converting it isn't worth the 5 points I'd save IMO
Just finishing sticking old mate together now and then I might give him a spray while I wait for headhunter bitz to arrive.

Just as I was getting on a a role - appendicitis!
I can finally sit upright enough properly to paint not in pain, so got cracking on my praetor.
I have done the ghost tint on his armour - my next step is I am going to try airbrushing his cloak. I was tossing up between green, or a dirty white (have a look at the cloak on the Forge World Armillus Dynat). Also the black its currently sitting at could work but might be boring. Have never air brushed a cloak either so should be fun

After this guy I am going to do a bit of converting on the chaplain model (just found out HH chaplains can use what ever power weapon they are modelled with) and make his Crozius look more like an axe than a blunt object. Also want to remove the plasma pistol and put on a bolt pistol (or should I go a Volkite Serpenta as it seems more Alpha Legion like??)

Made a bunch of progress on the Praetor. Opted for handpainting the cloak green in the end, turns out my airbrush control isn't there yet

When these 2 WIP progress shots were taken I still had only base coated everything except the skin and cloak, which had been base coated, washed and highlighted.
Need to make the highlighting on the cloak less dramatic, will chuck over a green glaze. And the blade bit of the chain fist will be pained black to break up all the blue/green a bit more.

Have converted a lovely axe for my Chaplain, use the axe head that comes with the 40k Chaos Terminator Lord, had one sitting in box on my shelf for a year or 2 that I won from some lucky door prize at some tournament at my local GW

Finished the praetor!

Those photos came out a bit meh tbh - might take some new ones later, I dropped down the shutter speed so probably need to put a shutter release timer on the camera so its not shaking on the tripod at all when I am taking the shots.
I have also fixed up those couple of silver bits you could see blue on in the photos. His cape didn't come out as flat as I'd like, highlights seem a bit extreme.

Current completed army shot:

Next on the painting table are my headhunters!
