I'd eventually stop buying new things and finally catch up on assembling and painting my stock. I'd look for widely available fan FAQs or make my own and find a group still willing to play.

It'd be like my board game collection - the games never see a rules update and rarely get expansions but they're still fun nonetheless.

So who would you like to see take over 40k.
If GW came out tomorrow and was like "bye guys we're done" who would you prefer to take over the game.
I think WotC would be pretty sweet. I think they have handled magic and D&D well and they dont currently have a table top miniature game so it could be their focus for that genre.

Anybody but WotC. They'd destroy 40k even worse than GW is. You think paying to win is bad now, just imagine when you need to constantly change your unit cards every year to stay up to date or certain things get totally banned and never become legal again.

Fantasy Flight is who really needs to take it, and they'd have the capital and existing business relationship to do it.

Okay, on a serious note, I'd keep my models, seeing as they aren't GW to begin with, and use them with another 28mm sci-fi system. Worst case ontario, I paint them up pretty and never play with them. Such is life. I have a bunch of BFG models that have only seen table time once or twice, but I'll be ****ed if they don't follow me around everywhere across this country.

Curse you auto correct!

I'd probably just put them in a box and not ever do anything with them. Just like all my Heroscape I never use

For all the griping about gws "outrageous" prices; 2-3 years after they tank(not that they are likely to, half the people i hear complaining about the prices still have all the new models shown in the painting/modelling sub) you won't be able to get a tac squad for less that $100usd(unless it is 3d printed, then it'll be $50-$75)

Unlikely to happen due to 1) recasters and 2) the whole lot of alternative models that would be released inmediately by other companies.

Progress is like a herd of pigs: everybody is interested in the produced benefits, but nobody wants to deal with all the resulting gak.

GW customers deserve every bit of outrageous princing they get.

IF GW 100% tanked?
I would probably finish painting what i had.
Try to set up a previous edition as a local group standard and faq things that we as a group want to change.

Or chuck it all into a display. sell off things i dont need and cry in a corner.

OR get fancy and keep working my own 28mm game using gw models.

I came aboard with Dark Vengeance, so I'm pretty new to the game as well. I bought a couple marine armies, not all at once mind you, I got the latest codex and then I plunked down for the big 7th ed book.

If GW tanks it won't matter. I never could afford a land raider anyways so if they go belly up I'm not bothered. I had to buy all my stuff used anyways! Don't see how that's gonna change any time soon. I'd like to see GW fall flat. Maybe then someone else can buy the IP and do it cheaper!

I personally am not informed enough about the ins and outs of GW's business practices or the principles of business in general. Im just saying there are several who feel that way and just was wondering what people would do if it ever did happen.

If no new editions were coming I'd probably be more motivated to track down old editions/cod exes and play them out of a sense of nostalgia.. For example I've always had this desire to play a 2nd edition game again with all the warhead and mission cards, etc.: fond memories

See post #3 and try again.

GW disappearing wouldn't affect me very much. Our group has long since run our own version of the rules. The availability of models may dry up somewhat, but there is a growing flood of other suitable models out there. Playing now more than ever - just not stock GW.

That seems to be the general consis along with the hope that another company namely fantasy flight, takes up the torch and continues to carry 40k, i myself agree with the other gentleman on buying up as much as possible, painting and hording what i want then waiting till value increases and reselling them for a small profit.

Mmh...Fantasy Flight taking over 40k IP..., might not be bad, i mean the Star Wars games they did recently are good, so if they do it right, it might be for the best.

But then again, lets wait and see, maybe sometimes in the futur, GW will open their eyes a see the damage they've caused, and will decide to fix their mistake, re-open the communications with their player base, will make real marketing researchs and listen to what people want of 40k...*Pfffff*, who am i kidding?...

40k will be around for a while after GW goes under, WHFB on the otherhand...

But with what id do with my models, theres loads of people I normally play with in store, I doubt all of them would stop playing, so I guess id hold out until there is no one left to play with then put them at the bottom of the cupboard... Would cheer my Mrs up atleast

I don't doubt the IP would be a valuable acquisition. Would it result in another company releasing new miniature wargames? I'm not so sure of that. Confrontation disappeared, and the setting has reappeared as a boardgame and the promise of a computer game.

Anyway, I'd keep on using the minis to play games, I suspect. old editions of 40k? some other sci fi game like Tomorrow's War? I don't know. I've got a complete set of all the 2nd edition 40k publications and no-one I know plays Dark Eldar, Tau or Necrons, so that's a possibility.

GW is not going down any time soon, a company with a niche market like this and still making profit which in itself is an achievement when you think about said niche market and the current economical situation. They are a big company and able to downsize if necessary just like every other company is.

And even when ( not if, ofc ) it does happen the IP will be purchased and the game continued in one form or the other.

I'd probably see how things go with the game for a while, and if the new game would be horrid then I'd probably sell them and continue with my other game, Warmachine.

What would I do?

The same for their models as I have for the models for every other game I've played that tanked. They join the "orphans" in the shed.

I've got stuff from VOID, Warzone (1st and 2nd eds), and half a dozen other games in that shed. The GW rules, however, will get binned.

People have been saying this for years and for years they've been wrong.
GW will fold, but it might be long after we stopped caring.
It's looking worse and worse for GW after every June price-hike, and after each annual financial report.
People might have been shouting that GW is falling, but at some time in the future, it will be true.

The only thing that might prevent that is if it gets bought before the end.

As for what I'd do if it happened tomorrow?
If the rest of the people I play against do the same, I would keep gradually buying models, and playing as if nothing happened.

I'd do what plenty of others have said already: keep playing, painting, and modeling with the hobby I enjoy.

If GW does go completely bankrupt, I honestly don't think it will be the end of 40k. Some company with actual business sense would take over at least part of the IP. Whether the game would continue to be updated and supported in its current form is another story.

If GW tanked I too believe WotC would grab it up in the blink of an eye. I got mixed feelings about that. I do like their d20 system, I felt I coulda expanded on it, as though it was almost incomplete. If they didn't and the whole show ended the models will still be collected by others. They'd become collectibles and the hardest to find limited edition models will fetch a pretty buck.

If GW, not 40k, tanked? I'd pop open a celebratory champaign bottle and gleefully wait for another company to take over the IP. People who can actually do proper business, make market research etc. GW set the bar so low so honestly, who ever the hell takes over, it'd be an improvement.
