I'm trying to do an underwater effect for a display base that I'm working on. The premise is that it'll be a lizardman standing on a rocky outcrop over a river holding the heart of a skaven he's just sacrificed and thrown into the water, with the skaven drifting down under the water and a school of piranhas coming to finish off the corpse. I already know how I want to do it, but I just have a few questions about pouring resin and suspending anything in it.
1. To suspend things in resin, do you need to pour multiple layers and gradually embed things in it, or do you just do it all at once and place them in it.
2. How would you go about making a cloud of blood underwater in resin? Would you use an ink or what?
3. Any ideas on the piranhas, or just green stuff them?

Hmmmm not sure about Pirahnas but reaper minis makes some pretty sweet aquatic critters.

Theres a shark, some ugly fish, and an octopus

Could some of them work as pirahnas?

Oh, and i only know a bit about resin, but if your pour it all in at once, i think it clouds up.

Hmm, the hatchetfish could work, but I'm not sure GW would allow me to enter it in Golden Demon with Reaper bitz. I actually don't really know the rules on that.

When you pour resin in layers, the outside will form a thin film of junk called blush, you need to clean this off in order to avoid the obvious appearance of layers and problems with bonding. Maybe there are some resins that don't blush, I don't know.

Even then it is hard to get rid of all the evidence of pouring different layers. I'd pour it so the layers were standing up on their sides so you pour the front on the bottom and successive layers would end up being farther back when you stand the whole thing up. Does that make sense? Cause then you are looking through one solid piece of resin as the window, and the layers and other color differences are hidden by that.

I hope you can picture what I'm talking about. If not I'll draw a picture.

If you do it this way and stand it up it will also be easier to get a smooth viewing window. Let us know what you decide!

You might find this article helpful: http://www.reapermini.com/TheCraft/49

If you get the right sort of resin you can do the lot in one pour, so no layers. If you try doing more than the type of resin can handle you'll screw your entire piece up. I'd really make sure you do a practise run on a less important model first.

There was a Privateer Press diorama of a warjack underwater. Can't remember the name of it, you might have to do some searching, but the model was completely underwater with some fish and other stuff.

Well Aduro, that's pretty much the exact effect I'm trying to achieve.

the link to reaper above is a how to on how he did the pic directly above. he did a single pour, and suspended the shark with clear acrylic rod. im thinking of doing parts of my fantasy army like that, but it was said that there were a gak ton of hours of sanding to get it to look like that and not cloudy. post your attempts id love to see.

Yeah, that's probably what I'm going to do too. I'll need some small clear rods for the piranhas and the skaven. I think I'm gonna use the Grey Seer from the Screaming Bell box. I was gonna make it a furnace anyway...
Fantastic article, btw.

This is the model that I'm rebasing.

Are you planning on the resin to go all the way up to his knee, or where? It looks like you don't have a lot of room to work with there.

I'm going to take the Lizardman completely off of this base and do a new one with him standing on a little outcropping of rock over a river, with a different skaven floating to the bottom.

Ah. Hmmm.... I'll post later if I can find a nice piranha model.

I have a reputation, Modile, a reputation as a fair, honest man who treats his soldiers well and supports them in the face of darkness. Potentially, that reputation makes me soft. It seems I understand failure and forgive it. Some, like Kowle, believe me to be a weak commissar, not prepared to take the action my rank demands. Not prepared to enforce field discipline where I see it failing. I am an Imperial commissar. I will enflame the weak, support the wavering, guide the lost. I will be all things to all men who need me. But I will also punish without hesitation the weak, the incompetent, and the treasonous.
I am a Commissar. I am empowered to deliver justice wherever I see it lacking. I am empowered to punish cowardice. I am granted the gift of total authority to judge, in the name of the Emperor, on the field of combat.
