Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

I saw my brother at the weekend and he mentioned wanting an Eldar Titan (he plays a lot of Apoc games and his Eldar lack the super heavies abundant to his fellow gamers). Seeing the opportunity to get my hand in with some modeling (and hopefully painting too), take a break from not-very-quickly-painting-my-CSM and to sort a potential present out for my brother's birthday (not until December, but I am a slow worker ), I had a look around online to find out how I could go about creating one of these agile constructs.

My searches lead me here, where I learned the secrets of dental hygiene in relation to constructing a Revenant Titan. I was immediately spurred into going to my local supermarket and browsing their selection of toothbrushes for some that would fit the bill.

I eventually settled for the above brushes. The bold curves of each style of brush seemed to say to me "please giant shop browsing person, buy me and turn me into a titan!". The blue brushes have some detailing that looked to me perfectly suited to forming the thigh section of the leg. The white brushes had a rather cool shin/knee looking area, as well as what could easily become some vents on the rear.

Armed with my purchases I returned home and immediately began cutting the brushes. Initially I just cut the heads off, but discovered that the legs were far too long - being about 26cm all together. This meant that I then had to chop about an inch off the points of the top of the blue brushes and a similar measure from the bottoms of the white brushes.

I have to say that after using my old beat up saw for this task I will definitely be buying a new one soon as it took forever and left my hands aching

At this point I also got out the old power drill (I tried using a pin drill but it was not going anywhere) and drilled out some holes in the brushes so that I could pin them together using florists wire.

Whilst waiting for my Titan's legs to dry I constructed about 3 paper torso templates (not shown here) before settling on a design and transferring it to plasticard (shown assembled above).

The shoulder/neck region of the torso will be built up using a combination of green stuff and plasticard to the more familiar shape associated with the Revenant later on - I got tired of my fingers sticking to everything and having a layer of superglue coating my hands at this point

I still have the templates, so I can make another titan as and when I feel like it (also have a spare set of toothbrushes - win!). I will add the templates and the design sketch I was working to to the thread later.

Once the torso was constructed, I trial fitted the legs in what I hope is a dashing and dynamic pose.

I hope to work on this fairly often, and not get side tracked into doing something else - hence me posting at this early stage - so people can shout at me to do some more (assuming that enough people find this blog interesting anyway ).

Hmmm... I'd not thought about that - I will have a play and see what I can come up with.

Interesting, never really noticed the aesthetics of toothbrushes before.
Just one thing though, looks good but the left legs join looks a bit funny at the moment, doesn't seem right to me having an almost open joint on a WAR machine. Nice work!

I have to say that toothbrush design was not high up on my list of interests, but there are some rather cool looking designs about these days, even in the cheapo section where I was hunting

The knee joints will get a healthy dose of GS in the near future so they should hopefully look better after that - having said that, I can always reposition the joints if it still looks a bit off.

Very nice man. I'll keep my eye on this one. I'm not too keen on the original toothbrush Titan, so I'm hoping yours will trump it. Keep up the good work!

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

I've decided to use some of my sick day (when I am not actually being sick) working on this project.

So far I have added the base of a neck collar, the waist brace for the thrusters, and the main form of the shoulder rocket pods. I'm currently making a paper mock up of the waist thrusters (pictures when I'm done )

Also have a view from the rear:

And from the side:

I've also taken a picture of all the templates I used to construct the torso section of the titan.

Each torso plate is 3cm high, and the circular cutout is 1cm deep. The bottom edge tapers up 1cm (ie it is level with the top of the circular cutout) and the top chest piece is 14cm long, with each smaller section being 0.5cm shorter on each top edge (so mid plate is 13cm, and low plate is 12cm).

The belly plate is 6x2cm.

The back plate is 2.5x3cm.

Nice, love it when people are cheap.

NO! that should definitely NOT be a rule!!!! Thats just gross! I don't want some slaanesh warrior charging me, Screaming a BloodLust filled roar, with his Jolly Roger Flopping around!!!! Thats just gross! I mean.....if it was a female warrior and she wasn't that bad looking, I think I could capture a few prisoners. My 'Interrogation' skill will be most useful then - Commissar NIkev

Not that I am aware of - no. He's not really the internet geek type.

@ Mistress of minis - Haha, good stuff. I have to say that so far this has been pretty easy to assemble, though obviously it is still early days

@ LORDEATSALOT - Erm... thanks?

@ Everyone else - Thanks for the positive comments

I am about half way through constructing the waist thrusters. I used some wall sinks (for screwing screws into walls) to form the "rocket" end of the thrusters as well as form the "intake" end, with plasticard to form the bottom and top of the case. I will start GS'ing the sides at a later time, possibly tonight. Pictures will follow.

On the subject of razors, when you buy a pack or replacement razor-heads, the pack they come in seems perfect for sticking on the side of a building as air vents You can gain modelling advantage whether you use disposable or non-disposable! A win either way!

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

Ok, not done much since the last update, but I thought I would post just to keep things going.

I've added some gem stones to the tops of the calves, and started work on the knee joints. I've also started work on GS'ing the torso and smoothing out the joins along the spine (though they are going to be covered up for the most part)

Also added a bit of GS to the thrusters to give it some stability for when I add on the plasticard sides.

Titan with one waist thruster in place to see scale/fit/etc.

Titan with thrusters turned so you can see the front and back ends.

As an added bonus, I am also posting my finished (apart from the base) Avatar for my newly arrived Eldar army (woo).

So, Lugganath's first avatar (I have 2):

I love it. Simple and cheap. I wish I would have taken the time to figure that method out. I refuse to purchase a titan and I am constantly trying to find a way to create one on the cheap. Thanks for the ideas (though I need to make imperial titans) and the extra motivation!

Wahaow, that's neat! I need to show Sammy, the Eldar Player at the Club, this. He'll be out buying Toothbrushes come the weekend, no doubt.

Very nice work, I might even try to replicate it myself. Does your Bro know that you're doing this? If not, that's one heck of a surprise!

It should be roughly 30cm tall when it is done from memory (may be wrong on that - and it still has a long way to go before it is built too - so the size can change).

It will also be mounted on top of a small scenic base, jumping off a ruined building.
