Here is my first Elite Cadre (sternguard) Mentor Legionaire along with my converted Kantor model who represents Nisk Ran-Thawll the chapter master of the Mentor Legion. So tell me what you all think! Im still working on them, as you can see I just want to know what you think so far of my colors, I dont paint green or white often at all, and this is my first go at something like this.

Looks, like a very good start. Your green looks a little thic, but that might just be from the pics.

I don't like that the shading on the feet and on the rest of the armor are different. Try to get the same brown that you currently have on the legs down on the feet. The yellows also look a little too saturated and strong on the legs. Tone those down and equalize your shading and you'll be golden!

I would say the maybe the green needs a little more highlighting and the white needs some shading. (maybe a wash into the recesses) Other than that, they are looking great. Where is that gizmo on top of the chapter masters pack from ? It looks cool.

Is that a problem? The sanguinary guard are beautiful models and some people have used them as a basis for the following: captains, chapter masters, named heroes, vanguard veterans, and if you give them regular bacpacks and boltguns, they can make for some very stunning sternguard.

I don't see a blood angel, I see someone of importance wearing artificer armour (although the knee might need the ba symbol shaved off...).

Also: Mentor Legion pwn BAs.

Blood Angels artificer armor looks like that.
Mentor Legion would have highly practical, technological artificer armor, in fitting with their background.
It seems to make even less sense for Mentor Legion than for any other chapter.

Thank you, as for the green, I dont have another lighter color to highlight with otherwise it would be highlighted some more lol. The white is pretty much just a spray one skull white primer with Gryphonne Sepia wash into the recesses and a black wash on that. I know the feet dont look good im still working on it.

The chapter master is a blood angel because I wanted a slight greek feel to him. Besides when I paint him, he wont look like a BA...
And the green and white, well the green is not washed with brown, its the white. I have never painted white before, and I didnt see myself doing a good job with the blueish grey so I opted for more of a gritty white. The wash of brown is more so the grim and dirt in the white, perhaps the oils and other stuff just from the armor itself. And as I said above, I was with brown and black, some parts I have not fully finished yet, but thats why im here. I wanted my own style of white thats all.

Im pretty sure every GW photo ive seen of them they are just regular space marines, I understand their background, but im using what I have currently and tweeking it a bit to match their fluff.

Right. They would use standard SM equipment (actually most likely mk8 armor and scoped/box magazined bolters on all of them), and likely given their background, ornamental gear would be basically out of the question for them. I could see any other chapter working fine for "I just wanted to give them some ornamental armor" but for Mentor Legion it feels very clashing.

I think one thing that is hurting your white is that it is just primer. I would prob use something like a bleached bone to start, washed with a black/brown followed by a skull white top coat.

There was a great artical in WD when scaven were released on how to paint white but I would only do it on HQ/special chars as it takes like 10 steps.

You already know you have to highlight the green.

I suck at read but a red gore followed by blood red has never looked too bad for me.

For the yellow details maybe a tan colour also followed by your yellow or just wash with a brown and re highlight.

Perhaps with the captain if you shaved off his nipples and made his chestpiece/abs solid across (so bars instead of muscles) would give you a very pragmatic but functional artificer armor.

I might have to check out that painting white guide. As far as the green, yup just gotta get a lighter color for the highlights.

The red, yes im still in the process of highlighting that, i did a scab red with a highlight of red gore, sadly...those colors are close to one another so you cant even tell. Going to bring in the blood red.

Yellow details are actually gold lol. I just gave them a sepia wash and they look more gold now than yellow.

And now the BA...ive been looking at some ways to make a fancy armor but functional armor.

Great Job on the captain but i think i preffered him in the earlier photo... not sure about his bulky plate!

I love the paint. I think a little bit more red detailing might help it out a bit.

I like it a lot more now, seems more fitting of advanced and/or experimental armor that the Mentors would likely wear.

I found it in my bit box, I think they are armor plates from the assault terminators. I have done a few marines with the plates on the chest like that and even one of the legs, I might have to post them.

Here is a quick update of what I have been working on. I have most of my army built and ready for play testing, im just trying to fine tune my white and im asking if you like what im doing with it. I have also thrown in some of my sternguard weapon conversons, so tell me what you all think!

Thanks for the comments, I have just nearly finished up my "Kantor" stand in.

I also need to start writing up some fluff for my company of Mentors, thankfully there is not to much fluff about them, just mainly their background which gives me a good firm idea on what to write.

Mainly they would be fighting along with other imperial units, such would be either my Black Templar or my Imperial Guard detachment.


Another thing im doing with my 'Elite Cadre' is their veteran markings. A single white stripe indicates veteran status, while a single red stripe is that of a sergeant, and a full white helm with a red stripe is of course veteran sergeant.

Also my army is pretty much lacking that of chapter symbols, its going to take me a minute to free hand their eagle head, im going to take a few practice swings at it first on a flat piece of plastic like a unused rhino door or something, then work it into a shoulder. I will post pics when I can, I dont have much experince with free hand, though I would say my templar shield on my land raider is fairly decent.

Really liking the combi-weapon conversions.
