Are there any ones out there with only one defiler box?

I don't believe so, unless you want the scorpion to only have 4 legs

That would be nice though.

I've never seen a scorpion with only 4 legs, but there's nothing wrong with the idea of a 'short scorpion' (especially counting-as a defiler or soul grinder) - the main difficulty would be the tail, as you won't be able to make it from spare arms/legs the way most people do.

I was plannign to make one that i would play as a funky looking defiler in normal games btu use the brass scorpion rules in apoc games.

I saw a pic of one ages ago where someone based their scorpion around a vindicator chassis. it looked huge!!

Glad you found my photos and construction notes helpful. Let me know how it works out for you and please share some pictures when you are done.

For those interested in this topic, I've run some clinics for Brass Scorpion construction for my local GW shops and Battle Bunker starting the summer before Apocalypse was released. The GW US website also had a construction guide for two different Brass Scorpion designs on their website for the first half of 2008. If you recall there were guides for "Ed's Scorpion" and "Bob's Scorpion", mine being the latter. If you think it might be helpful, here are pictures of some other finished models I've done for myself. Each has a different face and different design Scorpion Cannon. I defintely had some fun experimenting with different bits and the character of these models.

The photo shown at the top is of my first Scorpion, which has been on display in the Baltimore Battle Bunker since late summer 2007. The one with the Volley Gun for a Scorpion Cannon was the second one I built for the clinics I did at the Bunker in 2007. The one with the saw blades and Hellhammer for a Scorpion Cannon was the last one I built for myself. The one shown above in a previous post is in my Dakka Gallery and was built purely from two Defiler kits, the Scorpion Cannon being made from the four autocannons that came in those kits.

Hmm you know a 4 legged defiler would actually be pretty awesome. I thought it would still take 2 kits to make but would look pretty neat. I think I might have to invest in this. A 4,6 or 8 legged one really doesnt look that though to make. I think once you set all the peices next to each other it would prolly build itself.

Can't you see we have been abandoned? Forget matters of duty and honor to the emperor this is now a matter of pride.

A friend of mine does all his Defilers in a scorpion style layout to match the desert theme of his Thousand Sons army. I helped him with the body design when he was getting started on that project. You can check out pictures at his blog here.

Just to be clear. Do scorpions have 6 or 8 legs? I have a soulgrinder model sitting doign nothing iso i have spare bits lyign around.

I was hoping to find pics of the vindicator based scorpion but multiple google searches have not brought any joy.
So i think i will has to invest in a couple of Defilers instead.

Yep, i've seen a scorpion in my uncle's local gaming store in sailsbury. Since he plays chaos he was quite interested in how it was made, the store manager said it was just using two defiler box set.

And i don't think it'd be too bad having one with four legs either. It saves you £35 quid (i think) after all.

Do scorpions have 6 or 8 legs?
They have 8 legs. They are arthropods. There was even a joke about it in the Builder's Guide on the US website, referencing the fact that the model in the Apocalypse book only has 6 legs but the ones in the Builder's Guide, mine and Ed's, both had 8 legs. Scorpions have 8 legs and 2 arms plus a tail of course. There are lots of pictures on the Internet of scorpions and other arthropods that you can use for reference and in fact, I did just that before building my first Brass Scorpion.

As i am goign to be getting 2 defiler kits i will go big with the full 8 legs and all the trimmings. Will rpobably take a me a few motnhs to do as i dont get a lot of time for modelling. I am hopgin to make it "dual use" so i can use it as a "modified" defiler in normal 40k game asnad rock out the full bad-ass scropion in apoc games.

OK, got 2 defiler kits. Also had a look at my Soulgrinder btis and i might have enough bits to actually make a scorpion & another Defiler. Not sure yet.
I'm hoping to use the soulgrinder legs and some other bits on the scorpion to make it look a little more special.

Also might try to use some extra armour plates (got loads of tank plate left over from various apoc kits) to bulk it out a biti and make it look more Iron Warrior-ish.

Still not sure what to use for the tail gun. The obvious choice woudl the doubling up the Reaper autocannons. But I also liek the look of the epire volley gun and the Hellhammer cannon...btu i also though about buying a leman russ punisher cannon? Anyone got any ideas/input?

A punisher cannon would look quite cool. On mine (which counts as a defiler), i put the battle cannon on the tail and the autocannons as part of the head, but that required a fairly bulky tail to not look too silly.

I actually find the 8 legged ones look a bit odd, just too long for my tastes. Given the other things in the game dubbing a weapon a 'scorpion' based on it's sting despite it having 6 legs doesn't seem odd to me.

The Punisher Cannon would look great! If it had existed when I built my Brass Scorpions I'm sure I would have used one or maybe a pair of them as a Scorpion Cannon. Notice the bit I used on my first Scorpion is similar, it's the multi-barrelled cannon from the old Imperator Titan model for Epic.

A Brass Scorpion is a Super Heavy with 2 structure points. It should seem larger than a "normal" 40K vehicle. Giving it 8 legs is not only a way of making it match a real scorpion in number of appendages, it's a way of maiking it appear more massive. There are other ways to do so as well, but however it's done it should seem massive enough to have structure points.

Yeah, liek i said i am hoping to make it look more.....sturdy than some of the pics above. I figure the Iron Warriros woudl slap more armour on it.

The soulgrinder legs should make it look a little bit more ornate, as well as giving me load of spare defiler armour plates to play with.

I shoudl eb gettgin the punisher cannon later today so i can start measuring up this week.

I dont like the FW one at all. I'm not a fan of the organic look. I am slappign extra armoru on mine to make a kind of Scorpion-tank.

Not to be a smart ass or anything....but not all arthropods have 8 legs. Your dealing specifically with the class Arachnida...which includes ticks, mites, spiders, and scorpions. Chilopoda and Diplopoda are also arthropods and they have many legs!

I like the Brass Scorpion...its quite nice. This is a hobby and doesnt necessarily have to resemble a scorpion exactly. To my knowledge scorpions dont have cannons coming out of there body either I think the conversion is nice and was definately a cheaper route to go as opposed to FW ....great work!
