Subject: Seeking Advice: Vulkan Counts As

Eternally-Stimulated Slaanesh Dreadnought

Hello everyone. I want to start an Imperial Firsts army and I want to use Vulkan. Do not bother trying to convince me not to. I have never used Vulkan before and I have been playing Co:SM since its release without any SCs. It has been an uphill battle and I want to use the money-maker. But i digress; now back to the topic. In order to represent the many unique aspects of Vulkan in my own rendition I need to get a little creative. The issue is how to you model all of his sick wargear and make a truly worthy Vulkan Counts As (herein "VCA"). Vulkan has a 2+ 3++ save, heavy flamer, & master crafted relic blade AS WELL AS makes all flamer/melta weapons twin linked & makes all thunder hammers master crafted. Whew! That is a lot of gear and some nasty abilities! Let's start with the master-crafting of Thunder hammers. Obviously my VCA is going to lead a hammernater squad into the thick of battle. Since the termis will be the only unit in my list wielding TH's I began being reminded of Chaplains. Chaplains allow for units to reroll in CC in a similar way that master-crafted weapons get a reroll to hit. So, the basis of VCA will be a Terminator Chaplain. The Terminator Chaplain is also appropriate because of Vulkan's save (2+, 3++). His save is the same as a terminator with storm shield. Ok, so VCA should have a storm shield. Analysis below will explain why I might shy away from a Storm Shield in favor of a "super iron halo" personal force field generator. The standard terminator heavy flamer is a must. There is not a single heavy weapon touting SM SC that I can think of. Nothing says lead by example like a HQ strapping a heavy flamer to his arm and charging forward. I dabbled with the idea of shoulder mounts or servo-arm mounted heavy flamer but aesthetically the vision was not doing it for me. Maybe you can convince me otherwise. Finally the master-crafted relic blade. I like this piece of wargear because the sky is the limit. There is not a "standard" relic blade. For VCA I wanted the relic blade to be practical. If VCA has a heavy flamer in one arm that means the CC weapon must me one handed and very dexterous. It should be quick and deadly from multiple angles. Since master-crafting provides re-rolls for whiffs in CC I thought a lightning claw might fit the bill. But I am still unsure because a lightning claw just doesn't remind me of the unique, regal, impression I get when I think of a relic blade. Also, a terminator with heavy flamer and lightning claw is pretty bland. There is nothing unique about this build and it reminds me more of a grunt then a Leader, Captain, Master, or Chaplain. damn, road block. A double-headed axe however can be swung backwards and forwards. it can be thrown. And most importantly, it can look badass! I'm gunna stick with that for now. If I were to represent the 3++ save with a storm shield, where would it go? On the same arm as the relic blade? Nah, a storm shield is much more effective in combat when on the other arm opposite your weapon. Maybe covering the heavy flamer. Man, a storm shield mounted on a heavy flamer would likely be very... HEAVY! This is why I tentatively decided to forgo the storm shield altogether and get give him a super iron halo. So after all that yuck! above I have tentatively decided my VCA will be a terminator chaplain with heavy flamer and double headed axe. One more problem: this does not make me think of Imperial Fists. Ugh. Please help dakka! Please help me model a HQ that fits the Imperial Fists theme and incorporates all of Vulkan's goodies.

I was thinking something like this:
Automatically Appended Next Post: Another idea was to actually have two models on a single large base. That way i could have a SM Chapter Master model (the one with the storm shield and axe) accompanied by a veteran sergeant with heavy flamer. Two models, one base, representing Vulkan. A little out of the box thinking to get around a problem is always a good thing. Whuddya think?

A couple ideas just thrown out there to get the ball rolling.
- Wrist mounted relic blade, like Kroenen in Hellboy?
- As stated above use Lysander, dremel out head and replace arms?
- Fist hovering in iron halo as symbol?
- Axe head shaped like fists?
- Combine weapons, like a nemesis halberd with attached flamer?
Good luck converting

Ok here is what I did with Lysander as the foundation. i still am not sure what to do for a relic blade though. Perhaps a sheathed sword would work. No one said the weapon has to be imminently battle ready!

For my "Counts as Vulkan" I started with Daemonhunter Inquisitor with Power Sword.
I filed away the obvious =][= symbols, filled in the edges of the armour on the legs, and swapped out the bolt pistol (including the hand) for a terminator sized power fist with a closed hand. In this, I then drilled two holes, and very delicately glued some cotton wool into the holes (to represent smoke). This nicely represents his Gauntlet.
I then painted the sword a bright green swirled with white. In my army I use a blue variant of this to represent power weapons, and a red variant for Force Weapons, so Green stands out well.

That is a sick model! I have never seen that before! The possibilities just got more interesting i think.

My friend made one of the best vulcan counts as models i have ever seen. He took one of the Power Armored Grey Knight Polearms and attached that to a marine body. And then put a flamer in the other hand. Then he greenstuffed a simple cloak. I am not sure what body he used but it looks pretty legit.

How about having a powerfist with the flamer implanted like mine, but holding the relic blade in that hand. This allows you to have the storm shield, blade and flamer in a simple package. To make the fist, use the small piece that would normally be fitted to a terminator heavy flamer and attach it into a groove made in the back of a power fist. Bish bash bosh, job done! If you want to go further, add some guitar string to the fist as a fuel line.

Yeah I guess there is no real need to have a huge heavy flamer. This is a real good idea, Captain Jack.

I have finally decided on what to do. I am going to convert a Master of the Forge. They already come with a two handed CC weapon (relic blade), and a flamer on the servo harness. I am thinking of slicing a large Storm Shied in two and having each half on a remaining servo arm. That way the storm shield (representing the 3+ mantle save) can be used independently from the relic blade. All avenues covered.

This new Huron model from FW has brought even greater hope to the project. An arm swap and a SS and this model is good as done:

Personally I thought of doing a Vulkan conversion a while back (never did start that) and making him up similar to a Calgar but in power armor and instead of bolters use short flamers under the arms. Unfortunately the old calgar in power armor model i don't like and they didnt make a newer one.
