My Chaos Space Marine army is going to be the renegade faction "The Pyre"

I decided to start this post since I finally finished my first two squads of Chaos Space Marines w/ Aspiring Champions. I have also just finished the first of my 12 Khorne Berserkers.

This is my first Warhammer 40k Army ever. I have many more models in my boxes ready to paint - I will update this after each one or two I finish!

My plan is once I finish my troops I will start painting my big items... vehicles and Daemon Prince etc. Comments are welcome!

(update - I forgot to list all of the models I will be painting)
Right now the models I have are:
16 CSM's (2 Aspiring champions) (complete)
12 Khorne Berserkers (currently being painted)
10 Converted Space marines
3 Bikers
Rhino
Predator
Daemon Prince
Abbadon

I will be buying more once I have completed most of these assembled models (I think i'll be getting obliterators)

At first this guy was just red and black, but I decided to do a fade to orange on the top of the model and it came out really good! (this pic is over exposed, he is not completely orange )

Painted very well, are you gonna do that scheme across the board or do you have different color schemes in mind?

I like it alot! But I don't think the orange trim looks good on the berserker, but gold would look nice. Do you paint other models?

Hey guy thanks for the comments. I will be doing the red/orange pyre scheme across the whole army. That doesn't mean everything will be fully orange like the troops. Some things will vary. For instance I plan on doing a red to orange fade on the tanks in order to make them look a bit more "fire" like. I don't have everything fully fleshed out in my head but most of it I do.

About the berserkers, the outline is mostly red, but since these pictures are over-exposed it made it look like it was totally orange. The only orange on the berserker is near the top where it transitions to orange to give him a glowing/burning look.

I'll try to take better pictures of the 'zerkers when I have another one done.

I do not plan on doing any traditional colors on the berserkers so gold is out. I will go as far as to use dwarf bronze on some of my models though

As for painting other models, I used to build and paint tanks and WWII planes when I was a kid, so some of that has carried over to this, but I haven't done it in a long time!

I like your marines colour - very different to the standard colours. An excellent departure from the norm and it looks very good.

not so sure on the beserker though... just looks a bit off...

Ok so here is a better idea of what my berserkers will look like - however I have since added a bit of orange fade on the head and the tip of the chainsaw.

I really like this look but it is not for everyone.

Wow. I love this! I was going to paint my chaos force (when I got around to it...) in Pyre colors. Your orange is amazing, and that berzerker is perfect.

Finished another berserker tonight. I tried to take a better picture this time. Should I be putting these updates in the main post or just add to the end of the thread?

Ok I finished another Berserker! I have 9 more of these to go (one I think i'll paint as a skull champion w/ a power weapon). The pics came out pretty good this time around. Updates might get slower this month - It looks like I'll be very busy with other things in september. If I am lucky I will get all of the berserkers done by the end of the month!

Your orange is solid. And your fading is sick. Nice work can't wait to see more.

Also, nice suble metallic brown/black stuff on the backpacks and weapons.

Thanks guys I will! The backpacks and guns I have done as simply as I can on these berserkers. A dry brush of tin bits and then some dwarf bronze finished off with some black ink to fill in some cracks.

Thanks for the support.

Ok it has been a while but after I finished my 4th Berserker (pics of the zerker at the end) I decided to paint my first RHINO!

It is basically orange and black, but it fades to dark red near the bottom of the hull. I also put a lot of spikes and skulls on my rhino... it needs to look mean!

It took me 4 nights straight but I am really happy with how it turned out. I decided to paint a little marine with his head popping out of the top as well - though, I think I might end up using that on my predator.

Ok, here are a bunch of pics of the rhino:

And the rider:

Lastly, I finished another Bersker:

I don't know what I want to paint next... I should probably finish my berserkers but these big models are a lot of fun.

I am completely in awe of your blending skills.
Congratulations on a really striking colour scheme. This army looks really nice.

Have you considered doing flame patterns on the rhino? I'm not sure if it's necessary, as it looks really nice already, but it might be a way to break up some of the large flat areas, depending on the look you're going for.

Nice rhino. But I feel like there's something missing for the front side. IDK, maybe some battle damage would offset the "nakedness" of the front.

I must say that I am a HUGE fan of your army/paint scheme. Probably doesn't help that I love CSMs and that orange is my favorite color. I'm not very creative so my CSMs are standard colors.

Just awesome! Keep it goin'!

Hey everyone, just checking in to say thanks for all of the nice comments! I'll give you a quick idea of how I did the rhino but I won't be using this exact method again because it required too many layers of paint (and a lot of touch up work).

I had this rhino primed black, and wanted to paint it orange. This was a problem. I decided to try something risky which ended up working but was not ideal:
I base coated this rhino with Krylon GLOSS ENAMEL indoor/outdoor orange spray paint. As you all know, enamel and acrylic paint do not mix. So in order to be able to paint the thing after the base coat, I then sprayed the whole rhino down with about 3-5 coats of Testors Dull Coat Matte finish. Not only did this take away the gloss of the enamel but it provided a surface for my acrylic paint to stick.

-I do not recommend this process to anyone - it is risky to cover your mini in enamel and its expensive to then cover it again in Testors Dull Coat! I was lucky and it ended up working for me in the end, but I have now found a new orange spray paint that is a lacquer which goes on super thin, and allows for acrylic to be painted right over it: http://www.dmcolor.com/products/

Anyhow, after the base coat of orange was down, I was able to take a large brush and quickly go over the whole thing with a thinned down Blazing orange (this is the true base color). I then took some foundation red and blood red to do the blending around the base. That took a while because I never had done blending on such a large scale. It was difficult and I had to redo it at least two times on one side. I really just layered the colors until they looked good and blendy.

Then I painted all the black parts black - then all the silver parts boltgun metal.

I think I did the highlights on the hull of the tank at this point with fiery orange and blazing orange on the bottom parts where it was red.

I then did the highlights on the black parts with codex gray.

I used a 1:2 watered down black ink on the boltgun metal spiky bits to give them a bit of depth and shadow.

I mixed my own skull color with some paints I had and based the skulls with it, then used Devlan mud to shade them, and then drybrushed some more of my skull color again to pick up the highlights.

The bronze pieces were heavily drybrushed with Dwarf Bronze and then covered in the same black ink wash that the silver spiky bits got.

If you guys want me to take pictures AS I make my next tank / troops / etc. Let me know. I will show all the steps I take to do this bright orange.

I think the biggest factor in making my models "clean" is that I use a big magnifying glass/light to paint all my models under. When the model looks good under the magnifying glass it looks good on the tabletop.

Hope to have some more stuff to post this week or next!
