I've read a couple of 40k comics and graphic novels, and I thought they were pretty good. My fave was the one where the orks took a Tallarn officer as a pet. So I was wondering why aren't there more 40k comics, or even a regular monthly one. 'Because not enough people would buy one its not profitable!' might be the answer, but c'mon, if titles like Iron Fist can make it I'm sure a 40k title could.

To answer this in two words:

GW Legal.

Of course there's no reason why there shouldn't be official comics... But I can't see them being done as anything less than fullblown hardback books, a regular monthly one really wouldn't have enough readership.

Aye i would subscribe to a monthly Comic From the black library that is if they didn't pimp the prices ridiculously high..And I Feel that a visual representation to universe as a whole would open a plethora of insperation To get new hobbyist and Gamers into 40k

Well, there are two major problems.

Firstly, if a comic were to be run in White Dwarf, that might actually add some value to the magazine, and of course, as everyone knows, if White Dwarf had had more value than "exclusive painting content" and news that gets leaked onto the internet months beforehand, people would succumb to shock, or something. Plus, having the comic be written by Black Library authors and feature Black Library characters, would, in no way, possibly get people interested in other black library products.

So, of course, the solution seems to be to run a comic separately. Ahh, but the problem there is that then independent comic shops might sell it, exposing people who are not wargamers per say, but who are interested in other classically "nerdy" pursuits to the universes. That, of course, would be in direct violation of GW's "word-of-mouth-only" advertising campaign, because having your friends peer pressure you into/recommend something is simply THE only effective advertising method in recorded human history.

I thought it was obvious, guys.

ive read Dan abnetts Comics before i knew what a space marine was TBH Edit
I knew Dan abnett for his comic writing before i knew him for his 40k novels so i know i would buy a 40k graphic novel written by him and theres prolly a ton of people who are fans of him for his works with Marvel comics then they are with black library which is very esoteric thing

That Deff Skwadron looks amazing! Space Orks are the funniest thing in the 40k universe, and I always think of them fondly when reminded of them at pub closing time!

...urrrr... I dunno

I read a few, and didn't really like them. Still, I guess there is potential for a good 40K comic, and who knows, maybe I'll come across one.

Because bad 40K comics come along and sour the experience. The Tallarn one you mentioned was great, but Damnation Crusade that BOOM! released before that was terrible. The plot was:

"BLACK TEMPLARS FIGHT THE ORKS! BLACK TEMPLARS FIGHT THE TAU! BLACK TEMPLARS FIGHT THE CHAOS! BLACK TEMPLARS FIGHT THE NIDS! DREADNOUGHT!"

There's a lot of beautiful scope out there for tense noir thrillers. But then, there's 20)0AD which has 40kesque strips in it every week, with all the grimdark humour, ultraviolence and spaceships you could ever want.

I wish they had continued Deff Skwadron. That thing was friggin' brilliant...

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

Yeah, there have been plenty of both 40K and Fantasy comics but they're not all great.
GW shuts down most of everything else, simply because they have the exclusive right to publish their intellectual property. Any problems?

wtf? Is that real?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Last time I checked G-Dub was partenered with BOOM! Studios. I think there main problem right now is that they basically don't have an ongoing series but repeated 5 part mni-series. I'm not sure why they do this because it makes it very difficult to keep track for many comic readers and retailers as it basically has a new name every 5 issues.

Anyways, I don't think BOOM! even does them anymore.

GW has a pathological fear of licensing.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

When people ask, "What's the point in understanding everything?" they've just disqualified themselves from using questions and should disappear in a puff of paradox. But they don't understand and just continue existing, which are also their only two strategies for life.

This is false: See Fantasy Flight Games, all those 40k-related computer games, GW's own licensing of LOTR, etc.

Indeed, this from wikipedia:

"As of mid-2009, Boom Studios lost the license to Warhammer and Warhammer 40k and will not disclose the reason. They made no explanation or announcement about this to their customers, and just removed all the comics and novels from their website."

And it took how many years? And how many additional products?

If this was an American company, 40k would be shoved down peoples throats from all manner of vectors. Look at WoW merchandising.

Probably not profitable. I just wish they finished the Ephrael Stern one.

BUT finishing it would've meant dealing with 'forbidden' aspects of 40k lore, such as the Black Library, etc...and of course the question of just how powerful Ephrael Stern was going to become. Mephiston may have killed 5 Orks in 5 seconds, but Stern killed 4 Grey Knights in mere seconds.

I Have three full sets of the Boom Studios Warhammer 40k Mini series comics, and i have to be honest they aint that good, story is weak but the imergy is good. As far as i knew Boom Studios had secured rights to do both 40k and warhammer comics but have only done mini series thus far, no ongoing series. However i aint looked for anything new in a while.

Are the people deliberating a GW produced comic here too young to remember Inferno and Warhammer Monthly? They got cancelled when Black Library learnt they made more money producing graphic novels. Which is why I can't see the like returning.
