wow, long time no see fellow dakkites! I've been away for quite some time now, and with the release of the new warhammer, I got interested and decided to start an army, seeing as my previous attempts to get myself motivated to start lizardmen and beastmen ended with me falling for the new daemons instead. But this time I bit the bullet and got a BFSP starter set. Now, seeing as I got one from a friend who piled up on them when he heard they were going to be discontinued, I got it for quite a bit cheaper, along with some chaos warrior heads.
The reason I went for chaos dwarfs instead of standard ones is 1) chaos dwarfs aren't even supposed to exist. i.e. I've got to have them! 2) I could use the night gobbos as hobgoblins instead, so nothing's wasted. But enough talk, onto the pictures...
*note* my camera sucks, I need to get a new one, so excuse the really crappy photos...
my first three painted dwarfs. I like the overall color scheme, but if anyone has any better ideas, let me know!
also, the big hats+curly beards just don't do it for me. Mainly because I don't know how. I'll do on squad of straight-beards, then when I get another regiment I'll try sculpting some curly beards. But big-hats are out of the question.
Here is my hobgoblin hero, converted from the night gobbo archers champion. The flaming hand is from the new plastic pink horrors sprue, and the skull is just a random skull from my bitz box. I will be using this little thing as Morgok Hellspawn, the daemongoblin of Vorag. The skull is painted blue to represent the skull-orb of Vorag's enchantments. I'll be painting a few ruins onto it later.
This is my first painted orc, I got a regiment along with my BFSP. I'm going to use the 19-model unit of green muscle as my main charger/distraction, while my archers and blunderbusses pelter the rest of them from a distance and my warriors+obsidian guard try to flank the enemy.
Well, that's it for now. Oh and by the way, I'll be playing the chaos dwarfs using the Indy GT army book 'chaos dwarfs', which can be downloaded here, along with a few other fan-made lists. The first one is the only one that GW will let you use at tourneys and such, though.

You made right choice choosing Chaos Dwarves! Cool army.. I wish I could see more of them nowadays.
Pictures seem bit blurry. Do you have macro function in your camera? It could really help getting better pics.

Those 3 Chaos Dwarves are nice! Especially with the WoC heads, they're really convincing!!
As for the hobgoblins, I was thinking about the same when you mentioned Chaos Dwarves + BFSP = "he could even use the goblins as hobgoblins!"
So that's a win for me!

thanks for all the kind comments! It really means a lot to me, seeing as my painting skills are, well, not the best, at the very least. I got my hands on a better camera, so here are a few better-quality pics! first off is a complete army shot, minus the orcs... you can see it's basically all the dwarfs from BFSP along with a unit of gobbo archers, which I use as hobgoblin stickkas. here's a chaos dwarf slavelord that I converted from the thane. you can see that I replaced the axe with a gun from the dwarf gunner's standard, to represent that he has the hailfire gun (magical blunderbuss). I've also filed his original shield off and replaced it with a LoTR uruk-hai scout shield, to represent his enchanted shield. (chaos armor+ enchanted shield= 3+save!) here's abit more detail on his shield: I know, the light from the top ruins it abit... I'm working on finishing my archers quickly, so I've been batch painting them. Most of them are still WIP, and only a few of them have the goblin green skin rite now... here's the command: I've decided to field Morgok with the unit of archers, to boost there leadership, and so he doesn't get killed so easily... And last but not least, the mt first three chaos dwarfs, taken with a better camera. (but the light still ruins it.... ) So my army list so far is: HEROES Slavelord, hailfire gun, enchanted shield: 105 pts Morgok Hellspawn, the Daemongoblin of Vorag: 185 pts CORE 12 chaos dwarf warriors, shields, chaos armor, musician, slaver, standard, attached eruption gun: 214 pts 10 annihilators, musician, slaver, standard: 145 pts 15 hobgoblin stickkas, musician, taskmaster, standard, daemon eyes: 110 pts 18 orcs, musician, boss, standard, shields: (could someone tell me the point cost? I don't have the army book at don't want to waste money on one unit. Thanks! ) SPECIAL 8 obsidian guard, great weapons, musician, darklon, standard, Hammer of Hasut: 195 pts TOTAL: 954+?? pts When this is done, I'l most likely start working on an Inferno Golem (big walking piece of metal and rock, like a SM dreadnought). There's one in the army book made from a 40k ork nob in mega-armor. Quite a good idea, I think I'll have to copy it...

well today I wasn't in the mood for painting up any more chaos dwarfs, and since I have an abundance of night goblin spearmen I have no plan to use, I decided to do a little converting, just to keep things fresh. I wanted to make a night goblin hero, but while I was looking through the gw.com pages, this caught my eye. Yup, it's Skarsnik, Lord of the eight peaks. I really liked the fluff behind the character, but have an extreme case of metal-modelphobia, so decided to convert one. The night gobbo lord himself was simple enough, except I extended his spear with a dwarf standard from BFSP and added some more to his cloak and hat. Gobbla, now that was a different question. In the end though, since he seems like nothing more than a ball of muscle and teeth, I had the bright idea of using a poison-maw carnifex head, which I got from a nid' player at my FLGS. Some gs legs, bac muscle and toes and he was done! I also gave him a leash, which was a brass ring clipped onto the raised ridge on the back of the carnifex's neck. A blue paintjob later and, viola!
also, sorry if some/most of the photos are flipped 90 degrees, I don't have a decent photo-editing software to edit them on my mac.
EDIT: nevermind, photos are a-okay.

Yup, Gobbla's maw is quite impressive!!! His body is quite massive & rough, but he's a bloated Squig after all!!!
As for Skarsnik, I think there isn't enough details to make him stand out... He almost seems like an ordinary Gobbo...
Maybe you could try & add some details, as on this one.
Nice work anyway!

@Yggdrasil, I think he's a bit bland as well, I might add some skulls and bones poking through his hat like so many other night gobbo boss-hats. Update-wise, sorry that I haven't gotten any other chaos dwarfs painted, I was busy test painting a few plastic horrors I got just recently. Me being a poor student and all, I hade to get them from a dodgy-looking wholesale website, which took FOREVER to get to Hong Kong. But they arrived in the mail yesterday, so I spent most of my after-school hours painting up two test-dummies, and here they are! one blue horror, and one pink horror. here they are, the dynamic duo, standing side by-side. I can't remember the exact paint recipe, though it involve's Vajello tentacle pink and heavily-watered hormogaunt purple. The blue was along the lines of chaos black, mordian blue, 50/50 mordian blue/enchanted blue, 50/50 enchanted blue/ice blue, pure ice blue, 20/80 blood red/water. The idea with the red ink was that every blue horror would have some weird non-blue ink at the very end, but each would be different, aiding to the jumbling, random mass that horrors are. Not the pink ones though. I want to keep them clean. Here's the blue horror, which I've decided to call N'zall. I'll paint another blue horror with a red wash scheme as well and call him llaz'N, just to keep with the fluff about blue horrors splitting from a pinkie and having the names spelled in reverse. Here's the pinkie, which I don't have a name for yet. This photo really doesn't do him justice, and the fact that the auto-adjust on the dakka gallery made everything darker does not help... I really need to get a better camera! there, that shows the pink a bit better! I like how the horror sprue itself comes with like a bagillion different arms, One of which I used in my previous Morgok conversion, even though I didn't get that specific arm from the set I got yesterday. The models themselves are pretty good sculpts, And the way that the heads poke through the tongue and the arms fit into holes in the armpits is pure genius! Well, that's all for now, seeing as I got to go to school tomorrow, and it's quite very late, bye!

Yeah, they're nice!!! Also love the name... Still, aren't blue horrors supposed to be smaller than pink ones? maybe you could try & find the older metal ones, they seem to be leaner & smaller... And maybe fit 2 on a single stand!

Thing is though, I can't find any of the metal ones and they just look too fiddly. I think I might just stick to one a base.

If you want to convert chaos dwarfs like mine with just chaos helmets, then getting regiment sets individually is a LOT easier, as the BFSP ones have shields and weapons sculpted on that get in the way, whereas in the regiment sets you not only get different attachable arms, but also the face in a lot easier to shave off. Also helps if a friend of yours collects WOC, so you get a source of helmets and marauder shields, which look so much better then my blank ones.

They're 40k Dwarves that were discontinued way before most "Squat Fans" knew they existed. They're constantly banded about by people too young to remember them as some kind of internet-kudos thing.
Don't sweat is Random, they sucked. You don't need to know about them. If you want just search for them at Lexicanum. That's what every other loser squat fan does.

If your talking about the miners/obsidian guard, I plan on giving them skull masks and big axe blades to differ them from normal miners. If your talking about the cannon, I'm working on it into a Eruption gun. It's pretty ugly as I just started him very recently, but here's a few wip's:

I have to see about them, I begun in the hobby around 1995, at a time when the Chaos Dwarves were almost extinct... So I never knew much about them except for a few WD articles about some "funny" Centaurs mixed with beardy dwarves & hobgoblin assassins... Plus the WoC Hellcannon, of course...
Maybe they'd be nice by now, who knows...

The idea with eruption guns though, is that they don't use standard cannonball ammunition, as the daemon bound within the metal creates it's own bullets by drawing energy from the realm of chaos itself, so the daemon spits a rolling mass of fire that expands as it goes along.
The scibor chaos dwarfs look real good, however, the price kinda throws me off. 47 bucks for nine models, while you can get 16 dwarf warriors with three different weapons options+option for command squad+plus enough WOC heads for half of them for that price. They do come with cool resin bases though, so I might have to try and save up for a few...

Yes, they are BFSP dwarfs with WOC heads. As for hobgoblins, you could use plain goblins for them, but in the army book they are deciphered with wolf-rider style hats, and as they don't count towards the minimum number of core units, I decided to exclude them from the army altogether. I'm goming up with some fluff about a "purist" chaos dwarf faction that believe all "lesser life forms" are unfit for military work. the night gobbo dogs of war unit only got in on the action because of Skarsnik's influence.

@OP : any update?
I was pretty clueless about chaos dwarfs when I started as well, But if you want to look up on them I recommend http://www.chaos-dwarfs.com/, as nearly the whole website is dedicated to chaos dwarf knowledge and modeling. The Independent GT Chaos dwarf army book is quite good as well, and it's a free download here. As for updates:
I'm not really digging the green tentacles. What color should I do them?(if not green)

Well, quick update on the eruption gun. I have finished the crewman and I'm done basing the whole model. Just to clarify, the thing that the crewman is holding is a blue fireball, also inspiration from Snotling on chaos-dwarf.com. (more of his army here) The fireball looks a bit blocky, and looks a lot better in real life.

I like the overall feel that the model gives off, what with the loader and such. Only thing is that the skin and green tentacles clash a bit too much with the cannon. A dark reddish colour would probably be a better choice here. The fireball I dont think looks too blocky, a pretty good job imo actually!
Keep working on these dudes and you should have a good looking and definitely very unique force!
