Dear Dakka,

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about modelling Ork Power Klaws? (WIP pics if anyone has them?)

i assume plasticard and greenstuff will be involved, not afraid of either. I do not have the economic freedom to lash out on boxes of Nobs every time i want to upgrade battallion box Boyz, and am looking for quick, effective conversions.

You will spend more time and money trying to GS and card work making powerklaws than just buying the bitz. Just remember that there is proper scale for ork weapons.

But if he learns from it , he might be on his way to creating bigger and better scratch builds we can only drool about :'/

sorry pipboy, gotta agree with LunaHound here - the creativity afforded to me by plasticard, greenstuff and gubbins is what i love most about the hobby. (and orks in particular - so many opportunities to stick bits on and swap stuff around!)

f74. that. is. freakin. awesome.

anything on a smaller scale, for Nobz in particular?

If you want the creativity etc, why don't you just go do it then? Just have a crack and see what comes out. Have a look at the sculpted pieces and try to recreate a similar design.

I'm doing a couple at the moment, I think due to the nature of Orkish tech it's pretty hard to really mess it up too badly (provided you're used to working with plasticard), as long as you've got the basic pattern of a box around the hand and make the actual claw part large enough, just keep adding plating and pipes until it looks good and Orky.

Theres a tutorial on making them using shootas, and the knife blades that come in the kits. Ill see if I can find it as it was pretty cool looking

I am not saying he should try but trying to do it out of card and GS, bitz are much cheaper and less time consuming. However, if he wants to still do it then just to remember that there is a scale and size issue with the model. Too big it will look wonky and too small it will just look plain odd.

I am getting tired of people saying that if I glue some card together and slap random armor plates on it is orky and cool. Most of the time it just looks like trash and was a waste of a toy and good cardstock. Just wish people would take the time to look at the object they are going to orkify and do some planning before cutting or sinking their knife into it.

For example a guy at my FLGS wanted to make a battle wagon out of the trukk kit but did not want to add more wheels or track. He was going to just glue card on and make it tall and long all out of balance on the trukk's small chasie. I tried to explain it to him that while an Ork can think that a weapon should work it does but that only goes so far and physics are still physics so a trukk that is off balance will still be off balance no matter how many positive waves the orks put into it.

So, I am not saying not to be creative but please plan before hand since there is a lot of examples on here of poor modeling just because someone wanted to be just down right cheap or was lazy.

I completely agree however I prefer to think that if someone is asking about how to do it they will be planning it out carefully and not just making a mess. I may be wrong but I live in hope.

Painted they look like this:

Just take your time, plan it out a bit, and make sure the scale is OK for the basic shape. After that, add gubbinz

Great work. That is what I am getting at with my post. The work is in scale so it does not look wonky. There are some on here that think my idea of scale, ratio and balance with Orks dumb. I believe these individuals do not care about looks and more with saving money and having models on the table. This is a game but it is just as much as great looking minis as playing the game. I am not interested in starting a flame war over the issue so for those that have not read my concepts of ork converting and kitbashing here you go:

I've only made one power claw before, but I followed the "just make one and see how it turns out" method(actually I did that for my wole warboss conversion!). I went back and modified it later, and to be honest, I don't really like it, but I have a better idea of what to do for the next one. Definately just give it a try and you'll figure out what works.

With some plasticard and rivets (and a few orky-looking detail bits from the bits box), a klaw is fairly easy to scratch build, especially if you design it not to need fiddly pistons (although they do look cool).

Also consider a few looted marine/terminator power fists, if you have any in the bits box.

ALL OF YOU need to watch this video.

http://www.youtube.com/user/Kanvass1#p/u/28/lpVWHjx_YbY

It takes like an hour and all you need is the right plasticard and tools. Oh, and DO buy plasticard instead of bitz. It's way more creative and fun and interesting. More work though. It starts out a little expensive but eventually it rounds out to being WAY cheaper.

Edit:
Just a little edit to cover why I sound like such a jerk to those experienced Ork converters. I found that the person who posted that video via his grot tanks video and consider his tutorial videos informative and extremely helpful. Also he's got a great accent.

Yea if your just wanting to build one or 2 PK, then just buy the bits and be done with it. BUT if your wanting more then that, and want to play around with building new ideas and such, buying card and whatnot for that ends up being far cheaper.

I made a pretty cool Power Klaw (IMO) using a papermate pen and placticard. I used toothpicks and paperclips for the pistons.
I'd say the size ballance is pretty good.

and the back

I also made one out of just plasticard, and it seems a bit big, but it might look ok on a meganob.

The second PK would look a little weedy on my WarBoss conversion. I'm making him out of an Old School Metal SM Dred,
so the one I make for him is gonna be big. I'm thinking of making it with 2 "thumb" claws and 3 "fingers", like the one
on Gorgutz 'Ead 'Unter from Dawn of War.
