I haven't done any myself, but mortars are the most simple type of heavy weaon to synthesize in that they need some plastic tubing and thats about it

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

I was going through the Treadhead thread on Warseer and saw a conversion of a Mortar. The guy took the Basilisk cannon and sawed off the barrel, then fliped it upside down and and assembled the rest normally. cant remember the page number (it was in the 400's) but if I find it I'll link you.

Amusingly enough I am in the process of building two Mortars for my budding Praetorians.
Basically using alot of plasticard,a syringe( small plastic tube) cut in half, about an inch and a half long, lots of chopped up plastic rod for rivets and some imperial icons rummaged from a bits box.
I'm basically aiming for an "old world" look,i don't have gak for a camera ATM,but I'll attempt to get some WIP pictures up using my cellphone camera.

Yeah, just a bit of plasticard or aluminum tubing with a bit of plasticard for the base. Perhaps some GS in there somewhere.

To be honest, mortars are so cheap from the warstore or wherever that I'd just buy them as bitz order unless you've got something specific in mind.

Appreciate it man, they actually were fairly easy to make...although I still have a few things I plan to add to them.

is that Perry?

Where did the mortar rounds themselves come from?

Yeah they are perry , french line these models, iam making a Praxian planetary deffence force in my manufactorum blog. Check it out for views of various modles including french unmounted dragoon and english line command. they are a little small , but passable when based and backpacked.

the mortar round come curtesy of my childrens toy box, he searched through for ya and found the actual toy set, its a 6 inch action figure set from a lookout tower that goes by various names as world peace keeping force , world peace keepers lookout tower, and power team. here is a link to a website selling it. and a pic

My heavy weapons. Autocannons in this case. The trick here is swappable weapons. Rather than using the tripod I took a 3/8" styrene tube (Evergreen at most hobby stores) cut 1/4" long. Cap off the end with a bit of card. Let dry completely!!! Now, place a small rare earth magnet on the center of the 60mm base. Glue the capped section of tube over the magnet (I place another magnet on the top of the tube to pull the covered one away from the glue). Add whatever scenery bits you desire to the base. Once dry, prime, add the gunners, paint, and flock.

Now the gun. Cut the small nub off the bottom that attaches the gun to the tripod. imbed a small rare earth magnet in green stuff and mold it to the base where the nub was. Prime and paint. Now all you need to do is set the gun on top of the tube with the lose magnet trapped inside. The magnetic force will clamp the gun right onto the top of the tube.
If you want Lascannons or bolters you need only swap the gun out rather than buying and building an entire new model. Should work well with a bit of GS holding the magnet to the mortor tube or missile launcher also.

Life isn't fair. But wouldn't it be worse if Life were fair, and all of the really terrible things that happen to us were because we deserved them?

Yeah, the best way to do interchangeable heavy weapons without magnets is a gun chassis. I put this guy together here using the tripod:

The best part is that I can take the lascannon, heavy bolter, or autocannon straight off the sprue and just plug it in.

As well, for even more flexibility, I'd consider making a big base seperate and then putting gunners and loaders onto their own bases, like this:

That way you can easily keep track of casualties and you can VERY easily swap a new set of heavy weapons onto a new base.

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.
