Taking a break from Chaos for a short while and having a bit of fun with a looted Imperial tank.

I saw this on eBay and it was already a looted wagon. Apparently no one else wanted it and I picked up for close to nothing. It had a few issues but I knew I wanted to chop it up and chunk it back together anyway so as far as I was concerned the original owner had gotten me that much further along.

Here's a pic of the original tank w/ the bitz I took off. I thought I had taken a pic before the Meks got their cuttin' tools out, but apparently I didn't. Still, all the original gubbins are there, just no longer attached:

Sorry for the blurry pic, wasn't paying attention to it when I took it.

A quick spray of flat black primer later and I had a nice clean Imperial hull:

I had researched in game terms what I wanted to do with this project and knew two things right from the beginning- my LW was going to have a Boomgun and it was going to have 'ard Case. Those features in mind, I started working on the turret first. I stripped down the original turret even further, removing the original gun and everything else. I wanted a very stripped and minimal look that would accentuate the size and ridiculousness of the Boomgun without having to make it overly large to achieve the same effect. I hacked and sawed and filed and cut and glued until this was the result:

The turret was standard w/ the original kit, the gun barrel is a 1/4" piece of PVC pipe with the side of a 1/24 scale model car rear panel molded around the barrel to simulate a heat displacement shield, the hatch is from the old Space marine Rhino kit, the latch is from an old Chimera set. The rest is either bits from the old GW vehile sprue or random bitz I cust up suing serrated scissors.

I'm especially proud of the crosshairs on the gun sight:

It is made of a gun bezel form a Soviet T-56 tank and sewing thread in super glue. I was going to leave it open, but it's little things like this that give a model that extra dimension, the sort of things that you don't notice unless it isn't there. Hard to explain but I am sure that you get it or you wouldn't be reading modeling threads on a wargames forum

Next was basic drybrush of the turret to see where I was at. This is how it was looking:

At this point I realized that I'd been awake for way too long and decided to go to bed. Goodnight all, thanks for reading, will be back soon w/ more updates.

So the first thing I did when I got up this morning was take a look at the turret and decided that it is gakk. The random plates on the side look lazy and uninspired. I have removed them and will be replacing them with glyphs instead. I will get to that later as another idea sprung to mind and as I am a slave to distraction I decided to follow that path today instead.

I started thinking about application of the LW in my army and the downside of limiting it to a specific role (such as Boomgun and no transport). I know I'll play it a few times, decide that I want to change it, and hack apart a lot of work. That in mind, I looked at it for a while trying to figure out how I can improve versatility and maintain a completed look for the model.

The 'ard Case upgrade on this model will remain, mostly due to my lack of desire to chop the hull. It will limit the firing points, but really, it's Orks... so whatever. The Skorcha option seemed simple enough, just remove the turret and add the weapon. This is how I managed that. Again, this is all interchangeable so I can swap the wargear around and have the LW perform different roles depending on what force I am playing against.

I focused on the Skorcha first. I took the bitz that came with the model and used them in the front-facing sponson on the hull. I pinned them together for a "twin-linked" look and added the fuel tanks from the old Imperial bitz. I had to replace some parts that I had removed from the model originally so the Skorcha had a frame that it could rest inside of.

Here are some photos of work step by step:

Next I'll be working on the cap for the hull for when I have the Skorcha as the main weapon and using troops transport. Or maybe I'll make the glyphs and finish the main turret. Or maybe I'll start painting my Warriors of Chaos again. It's really no surprise why I have so few completed projects (comparatively speaking of course) but that said it is still pretty anno...

ohhhhh look! Shiny!!!

Ok, so after staring at this thing for a while it occurred to me that when I have the Boomgun in place I'll have a huge gaping hole where the Skorchas used to be. I messed around for a bit and then decided to solve the issue and actually model the Grot Outrigger at the same time.

I choose a Grot from the herd I had sitting on the table from photos I took earlier today for the Shelf of Shame thread I have running (Yes I am shamelessly cross-referencing my own threads) and some bits of plastic card. Here's how it started out:

And here's how it ended up (I've noticed a mistake on the Grot so I'll be touching him up later but didn't see it until I had uploaded these pics and I am too lazy to go back for a minor detail):

And the most awesome part- everything is removable:

This project is starting the get fun.

Next task was to take care of the Grot / Skorcha combination. Again I had to think this out a bit because everything had to be removable / replaceable. I finally decided on a "drop in" hatch where the turret usually would be. I made it out of an old Imperial hatch, plastic card, and the bottom part of a prescription bottle. I added a few washers to provide some weight to the piece. I also decided to use the same Grot model that came with this as the Grot Outrigger:

Now I have the Boomgun, the Skorcha, and 2 different Outrigger Grots ready to go, just need to finish up some details.

Next I'll be adding some shooty stuff to it, again with removable / replaceable equipment.

No pics tonight but I picked up some Big Shootas and Rokkit Launchers from a friend of mine, will be modeling those up soon. Final build and paint is right around the corner.

That's cute! I would love to give that to my speed freaks. I really enjoyed your flamer design. Might loot the idea a bit.

Might want to resize the pics in the future. Nice work though!

Meatshield- Thanks!

agroszkiewicz- Images were from before I started uploading to Dakka instead of my own site. I'm going to fix this entire thread once I get some work done on the LW again. Been focused on finishing up another project but I'll be getting back to this before long.

Wow, I love the replaceable weapons (grots?), very nice . Although I agree putting the pics in the gallery would be a great idea... then you can put the standard ones here but people can zoom in in your gallery if they like

Ok, starting to figure out and fix the n00b mistakes w/ posting. I've cleaned up the first post, should look a lot better now. I'll be doing the rest soon, and then maybe I'll actualy do some modeling for a while instead of spend an entire night on my computer.

Ok. Not much time tonight because I am tired and tomorrow is going to be full of feh.

Finally figured out how to attach the Big Shootas in a way that will allow me to replace them (keeping w/ the theme that has evolved on this Looted Wagon) but let me tell you my heart wasn't in it and I spent a lot of time just staring at the parts. Thankfully Mork (or was it Gork?) reached out to me and guided my spanner. Here's the results:

Glued two Big Shootas together, made a brace for them to fit on, and made a bracket for the port.

Closeup of the guns. I know it's not a good pic but I couldn't get them to position right for the pic and it was more important to show how the gun attached to the brace. Also I did some cutting on it to improve the fit.

Closeup of the bracket. Doesn't show in this pic but it is now painted black inside and out.

Fits so well that if I didn't know better I'd say I did it on purpose. Ha.

Slapped some black paint on it, quick drybrush w/ Boltgun, washed w/ Sepia

Skorcha, Big Shootas, and Grot. Yes I am going to drill the barrels on the Shootas, was too lazy to do it tonight

Boomgun, Big Shootas, and Grot. Yes I changed the barrel on the Boomgun, decided I didn't like the other one. I'll probably change this one out as well but for now I like this better. I'll be putting the crosshair back on, I broke it off by accident tonight.

I know the wash on the Big Shootas looks really glossy. I took the pics while it was still wet. I know I rushed this tonight but it is what it is and it will look awesome when it is done.

Next is a Rokkit Launcher setup probably similar to the Big Shoota insert, and finally a Rokkit / Shoota combo. Covering as many bases as I can w/ one tank. This thread is a great example of what can happen when you have no idea what you want to do or how you want to do it. I dare say that in that spirit I am creating the most genuinely Orky LW possible.

I'm done. I have so much else going on that demands my attention I can't do what I wanted with this responsibly and rather than have it sit around on my Shelf of Shame for the next 20 years I'm calling it done. I can always go back to it for a bit of detail or actually finish that Rokkit Launcher I was thinking about.

It's not a total scrap. It looks decent enough, it's completely playable, and makes for a versatile addition to my Ork army if I ever decide to actually play it again. And again, I can always come back to it, but right now I feel the need to tie this up in case I truly am "done".

Here is the final setup, complete with Bloodaxe paintjob (because my army is mainly Bloodaxe Boyz... imagine that!)

Thanks for following along. I'll have more projects up soon. My main project right now is Death Guard Plague Marines. Check it out if you like Chaos or like my work.

I think the grot rigger would be alot happier if he had a small wall in front of him so that he actually had some kind of cover.
