actually, I was going for more of a tint of purple for the helmets. Its a mix of Ultramarine blue and Liche purp.

Thanks alot everyone for the comments.

Although, im opting (for now) not to add details to my marines, the faces were a detail that obviously had to be done now. I couldnt field an army with no faces. I have really had lots of practice with the faces and flesh since i took up painting again back in april. Now my technique is pretty much refined. Several colors are used to achieve the tone that you see.

Pretty nice job there, E. - looking forward to seeing how they're are gonna turn out.

I had an awesome paint guide lying around somewhere, which had one cool technique about giving large, flat surfaces some great tones. Could work wonders on them SM'ies there!

Edit: Just had a look at your Honor Guard (the guy with the green-glowing sword). Would it be possible to have you upload some more pics of that miniature? I'm a little sad that the picure's so small - you can't really get a good look at the details you've put into it!

So, you have amazing faces and highlights, but won't take the 4 seconds to paint bleached bone and <insert your choice of color> as the wax for purity seals?

They would look so much better. However, Its your army, do what you want. They look good

haha, well its just that! It doesnt take me 4 seconds to paint purity seals, more like 10-20 minutes. I dont know if you looked at my commander, but I have painted some of his merits. I do extensive highlighting on them and try to make them look like realistic paper. Eventually I will return to do all the details on the army, but its gonna take awhile. I do appreciate your comments though!

I heart devastators. I have dev squads with straight heavy bolters and bolter razorbacks, then lascannon razorbacks for straight lascannons/plasmas/multi meltas.

Oh, thats makes sense. I paint bleached bone, and then the wax color, then the 'text', before an ink wash

My process is a little more complex, for me its more like:

- paint a mix of bleached bone and fortress grey
- wash with delvan mud (2 thin layers)
- go back and highlight with a 1:1 of bleached bone/fortress grey
- work up to pure bleached bone
- add a final highlight with 1:1 bleached bone/skull white
- do the lettering with a mix of codex grey/chaos black

the wax part:

- basecoat with a mix of chaos black/snot green
- highlight with pure snot green
- highlight with a 2:1 mix of snot green/skull white
- final highlight with a 1:1 snot/skull

I know you didnt ask for my recipe, but I figure I would post how extensive it is so you know why im not doing it at the moment

yeah, since I havent played in awhile, I went online and just bought basically one of each Heavy....it was only after I bought all of them that I realized it should have been more focused (either designed to pop infantry OR vehicles)...so I guess im going to split them into teams of 5 and see how they play!

In its entirety probably about 2 weeks (2-4 hours a day).

Thats exactly why im opting out of detail right now. I want a large army but dont want to paint the details/highlighting on a tactical squad for 6 weeks (exaggeration)! I would rather finish the bulk of the army, then come back and paint the sqds that are unique first. It would bother me too much to just rush through all the detail with a mediocre paint job, but for some reason it doesnt bother me to see marines half painted without bolters! go figure

if your tlaking about the DC marine and his black armor, my technique is this:

- 2:1 Chaos Black/Shadow Grey (paint the large areas where light would reflect
- 1:1 Chaos Black/Codex Grey Highlight edges with a liberal size border
- 2:1 Codex Grey/Shadow Grey apply as a final, very thin highlight to the edges.

If you do it right, it should give you a glowing effect
