So there's this...

and yeah one could kitbash it but why support a crummy model.

There's a lot of great Valkyrie kitbashes in the gallery but anyone want to throw out some commerically-available toys or kits to work from?

Avatar Gunship

I regret not picking 2 or 3 of these up when they were in shops.

Terminator HK toy

I still see these in Toys R Us.

Star Wars Republic Gunship

Star Wars Torrent Fighter

Anyone know how big these are?
The Torrent could really work since it's less famous, I see it with the bottom wing up and then a cargo crate on the bottom like the old Star Ship Trooper transports that were never made.

Other thoughts?

Uh, it's like the size of a Marauder bomber. Although I do know that Squadron had them up for like $10 per shuttle kit.

It looks like it's 1/120th scale. Which well...

Doesn't bode well to conversions.

Funny fact: the reason why it's restricted to US/Canada only is because of the USPS/UPS Air not liking the fact that the kit comes with plastic glue.

Well, the Terminatir thing looks like Necron obviously.
The Avatar thing is too round for SM, with almost no transport capacity. And I am not aware of any model with the right size.

The Star Wars Starfighter has exactly zero transport capacity.
The attack Shuttle is 20.3 cm long, so a Space marine would have to crawl out.
The Republican Gunship is a fine model that I use as an alternative to the Devilfish, well rounded and sleak design, the exact opposite of 40k Imperial flyers.

Postive examples are rare.
Maybe models for the Alien Dropship, Halo Pelikan dropship (paper model free download http://www.planetstarfreak.de/modeling.php?id=peli ) or Starship Trooper Dropship are a start.
Best fit would be this 1:60 scale cardboard model, but it is large (13.85x12.61x3.94")

Where did you find dimensions for it? I've been looking and looking.

Even if it's too small for 12 marines (frankly so is the GW one) I can still go with my thought of putting a cargo crate under it.

Anyways what I'm doing is losing the turret, putting it on a razorback, Using the razorback LCs to go either side of the nose, Losing the vent that hangs over the turret, building a back end out of plasticard, following the shape of the hull, leaving the back panel non-existent. the dread, instead of hanging onto the back, stands in this area.

Yeah, yeah threadcromancy but it's my darn thread and this is topical again especially as most of us have now seen this.

2 things I'm now thinking of:

http://www.amazon.com/Revell-Star-Wars-Imperial-Shuttle/dp/B001GRZM8G/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1296058329&sr=8-2

Widely available and with an underslung cargo pod would work. Also just a gorgeous flier.

The other one is this:

http://www.amazon.com/Star-Space-Runabout-Grande-Model/dp/B000MFGPFM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1296058688&sr=1-2

It's a flying box but still looks good, also easier to convert to hide its origins.

Thoughts?

I'll post mine as and when I convert it. It's a normal stormpelican, but with an arcade-style grabber claw holding the dread (in real life magnets) and some marines on rapell lines attached to thier belts firing one-handed.

Most Star Wars thing look too clean for Imperium, more Tau-like. The Star Trek shuttle might work with some heavy conversion. Better is a Starship Trooper Dropship or Aliens Dropship if you find one in an acceptable scale.

Here an obvious alternative by Mythicast http://mythicast.com/ :

Forge World has these, even when they are not correctly equipped and a shame to convert:

I thought one of these, suitably converted...

But no-one does a 1/48 scale model.

Then I found a model of this...

It's a pricey kit.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

One of the guys in my local store has made a conversion using this model...basically, it looks like the Imperial Shuttle is having its way with an upside-down Rhino (becuase that's what it is!). It is an absolutely HUGE model...I think it something like 16" or 18" long. If he runs his Blood Angels on Friday, I'll try to snap a pic for you; I'm not a big fan of the look, however.

I think the best bet is to try and bash a Valk and the Stormraven together, as you could use the better-proportioned fuselage of the valk, but substitue the more SM-looking components from the Stormraven like the engines, cockpit, and tail.

I think you probably just modify the stormraven model a little bit. Maybe take the tail of, or make the body longer.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

Mattieu~~~~ It's not that eldar are bad, it's that they require a lot of intergration between units. Also, that doesnt prove anything other than GW has a huge hard-on for marines, and, given the option between making a xeno the best psykers or making a marine the best psyker, they will 9 times out of 10 choose the marine.

That's the easiest thing.

It wouldn't take much work to extend the fusleage with plasticard, it's pretty much square, flat plates anyhow.

I like my giant helicopter idea but the helicopter kit is over £60 to start with.

Presumably before attending you would have checked the rules to see that they allowed conversions and alternative models. So you would say, "Yes I am".
