Cultist of Nurgle with Open Sores
|
Ok, so after several months of tucking away the mini's when ever she came over for movie night, I did it. I left it out, and started the long conversation of how I play warhammer 40k. She liked it! She wants to play too. She's interested in painting my extra mini's in her spare time and wouldn't mind playing a game or two on rainy days. So here is the real pickle of this good news:
She wants to play with fairies...
I convert heavily, but rarely do I have time to paint my guys. She says she'd like to play with fairies and I'm excited enough to give it to her. So help me answer a few basic questions.
1. What 40k army can I use to represent what little I understand about fairies? Starting points I'm assuming are highly mobility and no vehicles.
2. What models would you use to represent those models? It can be loose, but jump troops should have wings, etc. I won't need fairies wearing power armor, but you get the idea.
3. Where do I get those models? I'm looking for plastic, with a high preference on GW for the event she loves it enough to see a tournament or two.
I'll start, and let me know what you think about my ideas.
1. Blood Angels seem to fit best with all jump troops I think.
2. I'm thinking fairies with bows for anything bolters, rapiers and bucklers for anything CC based. Maybe large bears/dragons for dreads? I'm also thinking maybe large flowers for devastator squads? And flying chariots for speeders.
3. This is where I'm losing it. I can think of a GW model for about everything but the basic infantry, the fairy itself. Something with a basic low armor model I can stick wings on would be best.
So help me out, swallow some pride and think as girly as possible. If this project you'll see a very interesting PM blog starting up.

I would have thought Codex: Daemons would have made the most sense, myself.
Wood Elves would be a good base for them. Wings can be cut fairly quickly and easily out of thin sheets of clear plastic from old packaging. Give her some plastic, scissors, glue and glitter, and let her go to town. Otherwise, look for cheap butterflies in your local discount store.

Not sure if this falls into the "lame" category, or the "hello kitty marine" category. Either way, Codex: Chaos Daemon's fills the bill for "strange and magical" to a tee.
Depending on the direction you want to go, I'd say sourcing a combo from Dark Eldar, Daemons, 'nids, and maybe some CSM stuff. Just figured out how to bang out backpacks with 'nid Gargoyle wings....perfectly sized for a marine scale mini.

Actually, yeah. Chaos Daemon's could work really well, no vehicles, the fact that they can most likely look like anything.

For 40k I can't think of much that looks like faeries. I suggest fantasy Wood Elves because they were originally ruled by a faerie queen and because they are pretty.

purple and pink probably haunt the nightmares of many men in the grimdark depths of their souls. just because something is pretty doesn't mean it isn't capable of evil.

As far as Rules, i would recommend a Decent of Angels Blood Angels list. It is really the only list where you have a lot of jump infantry as troops and limited to no vehicles or larger beasts. You would have Priests, Assault squads with Meltas, Vanguard Veterans and a Jump Pack Command Squad, then you can add maybe Sanguinary guard or maybe DS terminators depending, HQ of your choice, Librarian is good, as is Dante for Larger games. I am sure there are a lot of places you can find advice for this type of army.
As for models I think it depends on what kind of fairies she wants to play.
If she wants an army of "Tinkerbell" fairies. (ie. the good guy fairies, more of the modern fairy archetype) I would some type of Fantasy elf as a base, probably either wood or High elves. I think that barring a few female characters however, it will be very hard to find a good cheap GW kit to work from as there are no plastic, good guy, female Fairies that I can think of.
This second idea is my personal choice.
In many of the old legends however, fairies are not really like...pretty or nice and there were a combination of males and females. I am thinking of something like Oberon (Dante?) and Titania (Librarian?) from Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream"; They steal babies, play tricks on people, sometimes help people. Not so much evil as they are mischievous.
I am thinking you could make a little more of a evil/mischievous fairy army using a combination of Dark Elves, Dark Eldar, and Deamons. Specifically the Dark Elves Corsairs, Dark Eldar Wyches, and Daemonettes. The corsairs have the best heads and good weapons, Wyches have good torsos, heads, and weapons. The demonetttes you can use the torso and some of the arms. Dark Elves Witches are good too, but they are metal and harder to modify.
I do not know what to do about wings, but depending on your skill level, there is always pasticard and green stuff.
As for Weapons, I would recommend Sword and Knife as a representation of Chainsword and pistol. That way you can claim that the pistol shooting attack is the fairies throwing their knives. Also, in 40k most shields represent and INV save which you do not have. For the larger shooting weapons, you can use other "thrown" weapons. The impaler from the wyches could be your Melta gun/javelin. I think that the Corsairs come with a bow of some kind, but I am not sure what it looks like.
Fairies can be totally grim/dark, if you want them to be. They steal babies, then replace the baby with a changeling, then take the stolen baby and raise it to be another changeling, so they can STEAL MORE BABIES! Makes Dark Eldar look friendly as they only steal adults.
The question is, does she want grim/dark fairies?
Good luck and post pictures when you are done.

Trying to be serious about making a fairy army seems rediculous, but if you really HAVE TO do it chaos daemons works, and BA too to an extent. Just be prepared to have a LOT of pink and purple. lmao.

Throw me a Dark Eldar kit, some small 'nids kit, and a color combo of gunmetal w/purple trim. Think on it....just because the fey are magicy and dainty doesn't mean they are all cute and snuggly.
Wings are easily banged out if you have some decent plastic clips and the ability to smoother GS joins with spit and fingertips.

A lot of Faerie lore is grim. Red Caps dye their caps red with victims blood, that sort of thing. As someone said above, it depends what concept of Faerie your girlfriend has. There are already minis out there that might help but poor memory means I can't recall where I saw them.

As mentioned above, clear plastic food packaging is pretty good for clear wings. You cal also score it with a sharp blade to give it a cellular structure, or indeed any other structure you like. A purple wash (though perhaps some thinned paint would be better) would also give them a nice light pinky colour so they are not just see-through.
You can also get various colours of see-through plastic sheets to save you the trouble of colouring them.
I would say a mix of Eldar, Dark Eldar and Wood Elves would give you a nice looking fairy army.
Just remember if you are using Codex: Daemon that you will need to represent different types of daemon so you may have to look at other model ranges (or convert existing daemon model to look more "fairy").

I think that you might also want to consider what army is easier to play as someone's first army. Daemons I think are a little hard to master, where the Blood Angels might be a bit more forgiving.

Don't Dark elves (the grimdarkest of the Fey folk) have an army of Jetbikers? I personally wouldn't have a problem with Faeries with wings counting as Hellions, and you could use gnomes and other creatures for grotesques and Haemonculi.
You may want to look into the Fairy Meat line by Kenzerco. They're basically designed as sadistic Faeries, but will also give you some wonderful ideas about which ways you could take the army.

Here's the thing. She is trying to show interest in what you do and find a way to do it together. But she doesn't like 40K- she likes fairies (and probably unicorns, and rainbows). That's okay! Not everyone gets fired up about Grimdark. I would say don't force it. Find a little skirmish game where she can paint up some fairies (maybe with a handsome elf knight or beautiful elf princess rolled in) and you can paint up some goblins or something equallly dastardly and have some fun. Maybe even a board game.
Think about it this way- you like playing with toy soldiers, she probably sees dolls. Try to force your game and it wont be fun.
