If the play-doh is the dogs poop then it also eats its own poop. Just pooping and cleaning it up seems more mundane now doesn't it.

Ah yes, but dogs are coprophagic animals. They can survive quite comfortably on turds. In fact, it is believed that it's for this reason that dogs first started hanging around human settlements.
So in a way, this children's toy represents the endless beauty of nature's cycle.
As opposed to it representing the scatalogical humour of the Germans.

I think it is fair to point out that this isn't a German invention, it is a licensed version of the original Dutch Takkie Kakkie.

From what I understand, it's a game designed to teach kids about the responsibility of cleaning up after your pet. The die tells you whether to feed your Doxie or take it for a walk. The first player to fill their bucket with poop wins.
At least, that's the rules according to several Doxie websites/blogs (Frazz isn't the only Badger Dog lover on the boards).
