You're right, the wait was a bit ridiculous. It took a bit of work to get stoked about painting the unit is gone. The fire that fueled backing the kickstarter faded about 14 months ago after all.

On to other projects though - the eagles came in Wednesday, and I finished up the last unit (for now anyway) of the sylvan army.

Here are the final shots of the warhawk riders!

I can't imagine the dexterity score required to surf an eagle through a forest, but I guess the wood elves can pull it off.

That's all for this week - more work on the babes of Khorne to come soon.

So we're shifting gears again here.

The first bits of the 30k Space Wolves order came in last week, so I got started on the rout.

The focus of this project is going to be adding a power armored contingent to my existing Wolves. The first guys I've got finished are the tac squad veterans (grey hunters in 40k parlance). While the blood claws are going to be pretty straightforward Mk2 and 3 marines (they haven't earned their pelts yet), I wanted the grey hunters to look grizzled and decked out with wolf skins.

After some digging, I found this:
http://space-wolves-grey.blogspot.com/2011/09/how-to-make-pre-heresy-space-wolves.html

I liked it a lot, and as you can see, I borrowed heavily on their idea.

Here are the pics of the ready-to-paint squad:

The photos are a bit washed out, but you get the idea. I'll clean up the shots when I get them painted!

More to come,

Dan

I picked up a box of the new Khorne stuff to use in my World Eaters this weekend, and I'm pretty impressed with the kit. The GW pics really don't do the models justice. Honestly, it's probably worth it for the bits alone. If you're not adverse to power hammers, you've got a solid 10 extra weapons of all sorts.

While I like Krautscientist's approach (using them as champions), I took mine in a different direction.

In my list, they're going to run as chaos spawn (or red butchers in a legion list). I just read the new fluff book on Kharn, and I was inspired by the image of vast numbers of World Eaters chained up in the bowels of the ship; each so lost to the nails that he's as much a danger to his own guys as the enemy. The chaos spawn is particularly appealing, as I've been trying to figure out how to put together something crazy enough to qualify as a spawn, without getting into the over-the-top gribbliness of the actual spawn models.

Here are the results, and bear in mind those are 40mm bases:

As has been mentioned, the power weapons are a bit over the top, but as long as the rest of the miniature doesn't get too carried away, they are still within my tolerance range.

So what do you think? Do they make valid spawn?

I finished up the Wolves today. They came out looking pretty good I think. I'm waiting on 10 more chaos warriors to show up at my FLGS to finish converting and painting up the other half of the squad. The 30k Wolves are going to fight on foot, as Russ intended, and big squads are going to be essential.

Here are the first 10:

And here's one of them with a Cataphracti terminator to show how they measure up to one another:

A friend of mine pointed out that the old guy on the left in the last pic looks like he's yelling "stay off my lawn you damn kids!" I guess that's not too far off from how I picture grey hunters.

More to come, the Spartan is in progress.

Did turn out well and have a balanced mix of past and present to them, loving the guy wielding the huge axe

As for the chaos above some cool looking posing there mate, and the top pic has me screaming " by the power of grey skull " for some reason

Love the "spawn" think its a great idea to convey the Khornish nature of the Nails. Are you going to add any base decorations (thinking of kharn's FW base) to show them chopping through large numbers of enemies, and maybe the odd friend?

*Also the Grey Hunters are awesome! really captures the vibe!

Thanks for the comments, the Daemonkin codex provided much inspiration to add more World Eaters to the miniature cabinet.

Edreynaline: I would love to add some dismembered Emporer's Children (and World Eaters of course) to their bases, but it'll probably be down the road a bit. I need to accumulate enough left overs to chop up a few guys to make the casualties.

Here are the finished (sans bases) chaos spawn / red butchers. The skull bases are on the way here now!

Next up, more work on the Wolves.

That's fair enough. Those look great with the paint on. I really like how these have turned out.

My bits order came in, so I was able to get the first 5 long fangs put together today. I really like the look of the FW missile launchers.

These guys are a good amount of work, but they look pretty awesome when they're completed.

Well, it's been a busy week, and I got a lot of work done on a few projects. Here's what's finished and ready to game.

First up, here's a finished krios venator for my Mechanicum army. I may have a 30k game this week, so he got bumped to the front of the hopper:

And here's the Space Wolves spartan assault tank with a few scale shots:

And that's what got finished this week. The krios in particular was a good time to put together and paint. It's a really weird model. The spartan was on the other end of the spectrum. It was a pain to assemble, and it's pretty humdrum design wise. That being said, it's pretty impressive looking on the table, and I'm happy with the end result.

Anyway, that's all for today.

I'm shifting gears a bit today. We started a WHFB escalation league last week, and it's given me the impetus to work on my Army of Light.

Here's the progress so far - I'll have 500 points on the table by Wednesday.

The highlighting on the flamers didn't show up very well as you can see.

This gives me a unit of warriors, a unit of furies, and a unit of flamers with a hero to lead them. 500 points down!

More to come,

Dan

I made more progress on the escalation league this week. A friend of mine sold me a unit of questing knights on the cheap, and they're going to be chaos knights in the army. Here they are at 90% - they still need a bit of base work.

I also got started on the soul grinder for the army. I searched for a good long time for an appropriate model, and in the end, I went with the Mierce miniatures Talos. He'll be painted up as an empyrean to provide a bit stompy guy for the list.

The big guy is the last major element to the 2k army - it's nice painting a low model count army every once in a while!

Next up is a commission unit of tyranids to plus up the looted nids I sold a while back. The buyer is interested in adding to the list, so I'll be building a unit of zoanthropes, a unit of warriors, and a flyrant (surprise surprise!)

can I ask what colours you used on the skin for your world eater's? They look fantastic!

And that Talos is a very impressive model indeed.

I went with a light tone on the skin. Cadian flesh is the base, washed with reikland fleshwash, then highlighted with cadian flesh, and a 50/50 cadian flesh, screaming skull.

I'm still torn on whether to paint the talos as a statue or as a live guy - we'll see how it comes together.

You'll see more wolves soon, I've got another 15 half assembled.

The gentleman that bought the looted tyranids has talked me into putting together a few more units for the army, so once again, I've shifted gears.

I'm building a total of 3 zoanthropes (with a neurothrope), 3 warriors, and a flyrant. Here's the neurothrope:

he'll be hovering a bit when he's done.

I was going to say are you giving him flight otherwise it looks great so far, I loved what you did with that army just could not believe you sold it

Yeah, I know, I know, but the army was just collecting dust in my giant collection of armies. She's got a good home now, and I've got more cash to feed my problem. Everybody wins.

I finished building the other 2 zoanthropes today and finished up the empyrean for the escalation league army. As you can see, the zoanthropes have been upgraded proppa with more dakka and some nifty exhaust ports. Being artillery units, they are (of course) still grot run. No ork would stoop to looting a brain bug after all. Also, I wanted them to be a bit less eye catching than the neurothrope, as he's the boss. Here they are:

And here's Kratos the Empyrean (soul grinder):

I probably should have included a model for scale - he's a big fella.

More to come soon - the tyranid warriors (kan conversions) are next.

Dan

I see your point but there was some really nice work I that army, zoanthropes looking good all though a few rivets and a couple of metal plates would not go a miss just for a little more bling.

As for the big fella I gathered he must be a large miniature, but a mini for scale would be helpful

Well, I appreciate that he chose to sell them, 'cause he sold them to me! I've never seen anything like the looted Nids, and neither has anyone I've played against. They're just so unique, I'm thrilled that that have been passed on to me, and I'm really happy to be adding to the lot! They steal the show any time they're on the table at my local store.

The zoanthropes look great, I love the grot hanging off its head!

I'm glad you're enjoying them so much bro. Honestly, I usually don't enjoy commission work, but these guys are a blast to put together, so it's been pretty enjoyable.

I finished construction on the three kans/tyranid warriors today. As you can see, the grots figured out how to wire up the old warrior heads to broadcast synapse.

This was my first time to get to play with the kan kit. It's really fun to put together. The ball sockets on the legs allow for excellent posing options, and coincidentally, the joint sizes line up perfectly with the tyranid bits I had floating around. The gas powered chain claw was particularly fun to assemble.

Next up, I'll be assembling the flyrant. I'm not set on what he's going to look like yet, but I've got some ideas floating around in my head. I'm looking forward to getting started on him.

More soon,

Dan

AWESOME TRULY AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!
Love the kan conversions those arms match up really well even given me an idea for something now like I need another unfinished project

Nice idea to attach the heads like that as if they are still communicating very clever, just one thing no tail I thought one might at least have got one just for balance

Yes I have to agree the kans are one of the better kits with a design of movement options, shame not all the other kits have that ability.

I like the idea of the tail...is that doable?

I really like the sense of movement these models have. Most kans builds that I've seen just have them standing there, these actually look like they could be running across the battlefield.

There was an Italian guy on here that made a load of Kans but all in bashing and running motions, that's why I bought a set of them as they looked just damn cool

Sorry for adding to your work load with the tail mate
