I don't like the yeoman warden.
He's got WS3, 2 attacks and Ld6. he's slightly better then your average man at arms.
I see the champion as having three purposes:
Add an extra strike in combat.
Giving a better chance at holding position in a combat, should it go poorly.
and stepping up to get owned, should a challange require him to [to let a wizard wet himself and run into the back rank.]
Now, since no wizard is going to be in the regiment, [riding a big winged beast means it's gonna be a little out of place, without a look out sir!]
And because of the Peasants duty, that LD 6 will basically never get used anyway.
and that extra strike certainly isn't worth 12 points.
Conclusion: I feel that his points are better invested giving the regiment [or other regiments!] extra men, or other goodies.
Is this a good conclusion?
PS: This is my first attempt at cost-for-benefit in warhammer, As well as answering my question, I'd appreciate it if members would guide me [if I'm looking at the right benefits, and the right drawbacks.]

That's a lot more in bonuses than most champions get. It kind of hinges around how confident you are that you will "always" be in range for the Peasant's duty.
The other thing a champion is useful for, particularly in tarpit style units is to challenge a big character to reduce the number of casualties you take for a single round, so this is certainly something to factor in.

thanks. I never thought about that. it's a good point. if the oponent doesn't accept the challange, then he'll be out of the combat anyway.

Yea, take him. He has won me a game by getting slaughtered by gimgore. He saved the unit form anihilation. For and additional 12 points he is worth it. Otherwise you can just get two more men at arms. I would rather spend 12 points and have the chance of saving my unit from some uber hero

but I can see what you meant.
Rather then having 52 guys and loosing 25 in one combat, have 50 and loose 15.

So, Champions are for challenging other Characters? I play Ogres who are big and beefy, would they need such protection against characters?

I have to admit, I miss the old Infantry battles of 4E compared to this 5E wonderland of APCs/IFVs everywhere. It's like we jumped from WWI to WWII.

It's more about preserving your numbers so they can't get rid of your steadfast/rank bonus. Because of overkill they're still going to get a pretty hefty CR bonus, but that doesn't matter if you preserve steadfast. Ogres are rarely steadfast anyhow, but one thing to consider is heroes with weapons that cause multiple wounds- a champ could save your unit from the effects of that.
