I have recently been introduced to Spartan Games "Dystopian Wars"! I have to say that I instantly fell in love with the model line. The best way I can describe the game is a Steam Punk WWII during the time of the Civil War. All the models are resin and most don't even require assembly!!! The battle boxes are around $50 and come with everything you need to start playing (contents include 1x Battleship, 3x Cruisers, 9x Frigates, 2x Bombers, 10x Small Flyer tokens{which are resin, not cardboard}, and all the templates you will need). The only assembly I had to do was to glue my two bombers to their flying bases .... that's it!!!! I purchased the Empire of the Blazing Sun box and have finished all my Frigates. I will be posting more pictures of my progress and possibly some BatReps (no promises on the BatReps just yet though) as time progresses. The Scale is a bit small but has been a blast to paint, it's kind of a relief to paint something so different from time to time. Here are the pictures of the start of my army:

First off, here is the scale comparison to a 40k model (notice the door in the middle of the Frigate, this guardsmen would fit in it....REALLY small scale!!).

They look nice, but won't the small scale and the fact that they're one-part severely limit your modelling options?

They are more of a paint and play style line. I think that is why I like it so much. This game is really fun and it gives you a break from the norm. It gives you something to work on while taking a break from the unique projects guys like us tend to dive into.

I really like these. They look cool and you've painted them really well. Now my question is, something so small...is it harder to paint 'cause of all the tiny details or easier to paint 'cause of their size? As far as time goes I mean.

Aha, painting burn-out prevention . In my case, it's modelling! Good to hear the game is fun, some people at my LFGS want to try it out as well.

bunnygurl: Thanks for the compliment. I mostly drybrushed the models, then payed special attention to the details. I would say they are easier to paint since it is mostly drybrushing and washing.

CommissarKhaine: You know we need our subtle distractions from time to time LOL; The game definitely has potential.

Here is an update on the progress to my Empire of the Blazing Sun fleet, they are pictures of my Cruiser ships (Medium class battleships) and my Bombers (medium class Flyers). I used Google Translate to configure the writing on the side of the ships and the tails of the bomber's. The Cruisers say "Destructor's" and then they are numbered. The bomber's say "Wings of Fire" and then numbered as well. Without further ado, here are the pics:











There are plenty more pics in my gallery. I will be posting more progress here soon. We just finished a great looking 4' x 6' water effect table down at the shop, so hopefully I will have some battle reports in the near future. I am really stoked to start a world campaign!

Nice work! Our gaming club is looking into getting a new game started, and dystopian wars is quickly gaining ground.

I was given 2 starter fleets by a friend for minning a tone of metal Warmachine elves and got the book as well.

Really sweet looking fleet, man! I can't believe how nice your meatball markings on the hull came out. I'm really envious of your free-hand work here. The katakana on the sides of the ships is a really nice touch; it is not too dissimilar from how the IJN actually labeled its ships, although they tended to write it from right to left. Here's an example:



One minor quibble, though; it does seem odd that the Japanese would use an English word to name their cruisers. However, since you are probably not likely to run into a lot of gamers that know katakana, it probably won't be a big problem, especially when the overall effect is so nice!

Commissar Khaine: It is here too. Our distributor is completely sold out. I want to order one more battle box and I am waiting for my Aircraft carrier to arrive. It's on fire here in the states.

Miss Dee: I like the FSA ships too. I like how they all have the big wheel paddles on the sides.

Llamahead: From what I understand it plays pretty much the same. There might be a few additions to make it more fitting for the time frame, but the overall game play is very similar.

Well, I haven't played US, but I have played FA. DW compares very favorably; you still move using templates, shooting is by 8" range band, etc. The major difference in DW is how the flying rules have been implemented. This is also the current source of much of the controversy surrounding the rules; flyers can go into the clouds and become obscured, allowing them to hit or be hit on rolls of a 6. Problem is, they can cruise right up to you, drop out of the clouds, and then launch a ton of boarders. Because of this, a naval fleet would stand little chance against an all-airship fleet as it stands now. Still, if you limit the air component in the game, I have found it to be lots of fun!

Have you done the big one yet?

as I have just started putting the big guns on the ship, and can I see what you did or about to do with the front of the big EBS ship where the doors are on the bows of the ship please (Flashes puppy dog eyes)

I am about half way through with it. I am going to add the second wash to the creases, I will put some in progress shots up tomorrow night.

I primed all models Black, then airbrushed a base coat of bleached bone with a touch of fortress grey added to it. I then washed all recesses with Ogryn flesh to create a slight rustic look. I drybrushed Fortress grey all over the model, then drybrushed a 50/50 mix of fortress and skull white. Then I wash the creases and copper with devlin mud. I did this with all the models.

Ah, the wonders of devlan mud . Looks nice!

Miss Dee: I painted the planks with a mix of 70/30 Bleached Bone to Snakebite Leather paying special attention not to let any get into the creases. Then I washed it with Ogryn Flesh, instant awesomeness!! One or two coats will be good, but you can add more if you want them darker.

I have all the weapons on mine not primed mine due to the weather and the last 2 boxes of Warmachine RoS. Must of had 60 or 70 to pin.

Cute little ships! They really managed to get a WWI feeling about them with elements of steampunk (well technically WWI is steampunk but hey)! Would almost want some myself. Is the game fun to play? Nice painting anyhow!

Not played yet due to a good friend mooving and he dont have a table to play on.

I am painting a zeppelin for a friend and liked it so much I got one for me to have and lavish some killer scale paint on. My fleet will be Antarctica when they come out.

Lookin' sharp! I also applaud your katakana on the sides of the ships... not trying to patronize, but they're written really neatly and with balance. Just remembering when I started learning how to read and write the language... my kanji/katakana/hiragana characters looked... and still look like absolute . Aha ha ha ha ha ha!
