Hi all.

I finally finished my Nurgle Chaos Marine army (found here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/225183.page) and after a couple of months I decided it was time to start the madness again.

While working on the Sons of Pus GW released Apocalypse and with it offered many army deals. I picked up an Imperial Guard company and the one with ten sentinels. The plan was to build a light infantry / scout type Guard army using various doctorines and such. One problem, it took MUCH longer to finish the marines than I originally thought and by the time I was ready to start working on guard a new codex was released. Luckily, the new codex turned out to be more accomodating than the previous one and I was able to build a list that seemed fun and used all the models I had purchased a couple of years ago. I imagine the list will change a bit as a games are played, but the following is a decent start. Just note that when it comes to army building, for me, game play effectiveness is well down the list of why I choose to use a particular unit.

Cadian 713th - "Fire Eyes"

Company Command w/ advisors, flamer (x2), heavy flamer, vox

Infantry Platoon
Command w/ vox, melta, autocannon
Infantry (x2) w/ vox, melta, autocannon
Special Weapons w/ flamer (x3)

Infantry Platoon
Command w/ vox, grenade launcher, missile launcher
Infantry (x2) w/ vox, grenade launcher, missile launcher
Special Weapons w/ flamer (x3)

Infantry Platoon
Command w/ vox, plasma, lascannon
Infantry (x2) w/ vox, plasma, lascannon
Special Weapons w/ flamer (x3)

Veteran w/ vox, melta (x2), autocannon, power fist

Veteran w/ vox, grenade launcher (x2), missile laucher, power fist

Veteran w/ vox, plasma (x2), lascannon, power wepaon

Sentinels (x3) w/ missile launcher

Sentinels (x3) w/ autocannon

Armored Sentinels (x3) w/ lascannon

They are called "Fire Eyes" because they always go into battle wearing goggles, visors, glasses, etc with flame colored lenses (and because the reds and yellows are a nice contrast to the armor).

The rules for putting this army together are fairly simple:

1. Keep the paint job simple. I decided to use camo patterns and washes for a simple but nice looking "table-top" quality army.
2. Use a few minor conversions. Other than using Pig Iron heads for every model there won't be more than a handful of conversions.
3. Don't sweat painting errors. There are going to A LOT of models on the board. A few mistakes will hardly be noticeable.
4. Keep it easy to distinguish units. A circle on each shoulder pad using various colors to separate squads should satisfy this rule.

Well, I have probably forgotten to mention many things but here is the first infantry platoon. I went with a basic urban camo scheme using three colors and two different washes. The "metal" parts and other details are not finished yet.

As always any comments, questions, critiques, etc. are welcome.

Thanks

not bad ej but they look more like loyalists actually.. and if you woulld paint the iron parts in iron colour and the hands in a skin colour it would look much much better.. nice helmets btw

Good. Because they are loyalists! The metal parts haven't been painted yet and they are wearing gloves
The Pig Iron heads make a nice change from the standard and it's easy to do.

Just a bit about the process:
1. I basecoated with gray Army Painter spray color primer. These are great. I strongly recommend these primers.
2. The camo pattern was white, light gray, and black. Black wash on the armor and Pale wash on the cloth areas.
3. Visors are mechrite red, solar orange, bright yellow, and red wash.
4. Bases are P3 armor wash, characin granite, drybrush medium gray. I plan on adding patches of static grass (burnt and light yellow).

Take care

the camo looks nice, but right now they are kinda "bleh" because they dont have any details. The visors are top notch, so you shouldn't have a problem executing a nice skin tone and some details on their weapons.

good looking bunch , the visor idea is well executed and original. i say give your men a wash to add some depth , they look very good altogether.

Yeah, there are still a few key details left to paint, but I want to get the army on the table as soon as possible. This way I can still make changes if needed after reading what people have to say. Thanks for the vote of confidence

I was thinking the same thing. I used Vallejo's Pale wash on the cloth parts hoping it would give enough shading but it isn't working as well as I would like. I will try adding some water to a black wash and test it on the back of a few guys.

Here a few pics of the urban Veteran Squad. The only difference between the Vets and the regulars is the Vets use bayonets (none are notched or serrated).

Gotta say I am really liking the look of this army! The urban feel really comes across well and the minimalist paint scheme works. I agree maybe another wash of black to pick out a few more details without losing that effect you have right now. I also like the skin being covered on everyone (with the exception of the vets) It makes the visors really pop!

To all of the service members, Active Duty, Reservist, National Guard, Retired, Medically Discharged, Veteran, Disabled Veteran, etc, thank you for your service.

Thanks. These guys are fighting in tough/hazardous conditions therefore OSHA requires proper personal protective equipment (thought some Vets "forget" to wear it at times).
I used a heavy black wash on the gloves of a few to help with contrast, but don't have any pics of it yet.

I have been thinking about the right shoulder pads and that they need some color to balance with the left shoulder pad. I'm thinking decals with "713" in white or black lettering on backgrounds which match the color of the left shoulder pad. Has anyone had experience with creating decals and such? I don't think hand painting is the way to go. Any ides are appreciated.

Here are scout sentinels with autocannons. The weapons are magnetized and the cupola section removes from the legs. Once again these arel WIP.

They do need a black wash all over would add a proper level to the model they look a bit flat atm. The hands need doing to easy jobs make the army look real nice.

Hi all

I've made some progress on the Urban Infantry Platoon.

1. A layer of watered down black wash was given to the entire squad. IMO, this adds some much needed depth without taking away from the camo look.
2. Black ink washed gloves to add more contrast.
2. Painted gun barrells and such boltgun metal and than layer(s) of black wash as needed.
3. Added static grass (mixed 2 parts burnt to 1 part arid).

Other than adding something to the right shoulder pads there won't be much more work done on these ... at least until all the squads are at this level.

Next up are the urban veterans.

Thanks and take care

I feel spending a few extra minutes on basing can have a very positive effect. And to answer your question ....

... more Veterans. This time they are ready for battle in their desert gear. Yes, I said desert. The idea of painting a 120 or so guardsman in urban camo is just ... horrible. I kept the same style of camo, but used different colors. It helps make the project manageable.

Also in the works are movement trays. Having movement trays should help speed up the setting up process.

Thanks! I guess this is a case of realism versus painting techniques. Real camo tries to fully obscure wearer, but that doesn't make for the most interesting toy soldier

That looks much better. I agree that it kinda goes agaisnt the point behind camouflage, however I think that there is a good balance that can be struck between the visible and the obscured

Totally agree with Flinty about the balance between realism and a good looking army, the silver really helps them to stand out while still being camouflaged. You have a really fantastic army going on here, the use of pig iron helmets really distinguishes them from other IG armies out there.

Thanks!

I was hoping different washes would help with contrast and even the small amount of gunmetal seems to have a significant effect.

Onto the new stuff. The following are pics of the desert infantry squad. The red squad was the first to be painted. Originally the plan was to use a stippling technique to paint the camo colors. However, that turned out to be a complete mess. I must have been doing something wrong because paint seemed to end up everywhere except the target models . It also went slower than expected and after the first coat of VGC terra I decided to switch to the stripe/patch style.

Basecoat was army painter spray primer - skeleton bone
Camo Pattern - White, VGC Khaki, VGC Terra
Than different washes were used on various sections of each model. VW = vallejo wash, GW = games workshop wash
cloth - VW Sepia
armor - GW Devlan Mud
weapons - GW Sepia (some were black)
masks - VW Umber
Metal - VGC gunmetal, VW wash
Imperial Eagle - VGC ghost gray, VW wash
Bases - P3 armor wash, bonewhite

Normally Vallejo seems to be accurate with their equivilants but the sepia and umber washes were significantly different from GW. In this case it worked out pretty well for me

On to the pics.

Hi all,

I mentioned movement trays. Wellll, I had some extra plexiglass from this past summer when a rock decided to launch itself from under my lawnmower and go through the window of the back door. I thought it would look pretty neat to have clear bases. I set everything up and started cutting using a jigsaw. One problem, it didn't really cut the plexiglass so much as melt it. What. a. mess. No pictures yet. Onto attempt two.

Work has been continuing on the desert infantry platoon. Desert sentinels are next.

Hi all,

Here are some pics of the company command squad. I had painted them a bit ago but while taking photos I noticied they need a bit more work. Let me know what you think of my take on a jungle camo pattern. I used a tiger-like pattern over a green basecoat. I like the results for the most part, but something is missing.

The CO has a magnetizied arm to switch between a power weapon and chainsword.

I painted up the advisors except an astropath and a medic model is ready to go, but forgot about the darn tootin' thing when painting the rest of the squad.

Anyway, onto the pics.

HI all,

I have touched up the company command squad but have not had time to take any decent photos of them

Moving on the third camo pattern. Winter is coming to Cadia so the final pattern is winter/snow. I kept the same basic design and just changed the colors.

Winter special weaons are plasmaguns and heavy weapon teams are lascannons.
