Greetings.
Ok, right now I´m collecting Infinity miniatures. When I see photos like this one:

This is pretty close to what I think the dicctionary has to have next to the word "Awesomeness". I love this range, thats is obvious.

I see many people asking the same questions:
- What scale are Infinity miniatures?
- They are 28mm. metal.
- Cool! so, they can be used in a 40K game, right?
- ...eeeeehhhmmmmmmm...

Let´s discuss this subject.

A few days ago I was priming some miniatures with a friend, lets call him Lando Calrissian, and he has a good camera so I took a few pictures so we can apreciate the scale matter. Take a look at this:

Space Marines next to PanOceania Knights.

As you can see the WH40K minis look bigger, they are more bulky. Compared to the Marines, those Knights look like Light Infantry. They are the same size, but, one of those Knights can be inside of one of those Space Marines armours. While the Knights have some incredible detail, the Marines have more painting surface wich allows you to have fun painting them.

Can I use Knights as Marines in a 40K game? No to fanatics. But they still has some place there. As they are thinner can be deployed in a separate squad, as companions of the HQ squad, or maybe as substitutes for your Marine Scouts. The idea of replace the Scouts with Infinity knights is specially interesting in a Black Templar's army, as the Scouts are inside the Tactical Squads, they help t keep that "knightly" feeling of the Templar's armies (partially lose with the standard Marine Scouts). Well, this is just my opinion.

Next one. Space Marines with some hot babes.

They are tall and slim. More feminine than GWs women. Well proportioned and sexy. They look great next to those big marines. If they were able to get rid of the armour I guess they could share a good quality time together. Nice.

Can I use Infinity females as whatever female in a 40K game? For me, the answer is YES, you should.

Next one. Imperial Guard next to Line Kazak & Ghulam.

IMHO we have an obvious winner here. Infinity light Infatry miniatures are top notch. GW´s miniatures still have the good point of offering more painting surface, but look at those proportions! Compared to the Kazak or the Ghulam they seem puppets next to real people.

Can I use Infinity Kazaks or Ghulams as Imperial Guard in a 40K game? I will say YES any day of the week. Apart from the fact that they don´t have the eagle logo and some fluff details that maybe...

Last one. Necromunda Ganger & Tau with Line Kazak & Ghulam.

Well, this looks more like they could be from the same range... I guess not. The Infinity miniatures still have more detail and looks better proportioned. So, maybe some Infinity miniatures with a sci-fi japanese look can be taken as Tau models in a game, and also the Eldars... but I guess the infinity range has nothing similar to the Eldar aesthetics after all.

Can I use Infinity miniatures as Tau in a 40K game? I would say YES.

These were just my impressions, but, I guess that we have those pics over there so everyone can make his own point here.
What do you think.

Incidentally, the Onibawan Ninjas are kind of how I imagine Venenum Assassins to look in 40K.

Yup, don't see why not. Plus they are lovely minis to boot! I have looked long and hard for a long time for some budget to buy some of this stuff.

Nice comparison article. Thank you.

However, I shall have to move it to 40K Discussions, as it is specifically about 40K compatibility.

Eye of Terra.

I agree that you can usee any miniatures that you like in your games. Though I would imagine this is not so at tournaments.

Those infinity miniatures look great, but they were created only fairly recently when sculptors skills could be better expressed in molds.

The GW stuff could look a lot better as well, but what we see in their figures is a combination of moderate sculpting skill and the old casting technology available to them decades ago. Casting technology in metal and plastic has advanced a great deal and is far more readily available than it was.

However, that form of figure has become the recognizable standard for GW and I doubt they'll change it.

I've played games with people using pennies as cultists. Why I would I even blink at other humanoid miniatures on the right size bases?

Nothing is more important to the game than playing it.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

1.) Main point is: Infinity is realistic 28mm scale, 40k is "heroic" 28mm scale, so the proportions are more or less heavily distorted (less so in the new Dark Eldar range, more so in almost everything else). Doesn't matter much if you only use one type of miniatures, but those two mix very badly, making GW miniatures look comical and Infinity miniatures tiny. So usually a mix is a bad idea.

2.) Infinity is a skirmish game. If you get a squad of 5 miniatures belonging to one unit, call yourself lucky. That means in most cases you have to mix these miniatures with GW ones (see above).

3.) Some GW miniatures are iconic. If you use Knights as Space Marines in a 40k game, be prepared to get a universal WTF reaction. While substitutes are possible in minor cases, they shouldn't destroy the setting.

4.) That said, some Infinity miniatures mix better or even well with GW miniatures, mostly heroes, snipers or other specialists. Personally I use Morat Infantry as Tau Pathfinders: This works because you have enough different miniatures for this small unit, they are not of the slim type and represent a separate Alien race.

Summary: Mixing might work in singular cases but not generally (or only in a very tolerant metagame).

That said, I like Infinity miniatures very much and have heard that the game isn't bad either. Some miniatures are delicate to assemble though and not for beginners.

Infinity has been going for about five years.

I don't think there have been any revolutions in mould design in that time, but if there have, I would hope that GW, the £100 million producer of "the best toy soldiers in the world" would manage to catch up with Corvus Belli. It's only a 15mm historicals company, basically.

But I expect you are right.

Also, thanks for turning me on to this line. While I have no plans of fielding an entire army's worth, these look like a perfect opportunity as Inquisition Henchmen for my impending Grey Knights army.

God knows GW is going to be no help on that front.
