So, a while ago, one of the old metal Carnosaur models came into my possession. Being obsessed with ogres, I did the only sensible thing a person in my possession would do. I put an ogre on it.
Now, some people might ask, 'Why do you have an Ogre riding a dinosaur?' To which I reply, 'Why do you not have an Ogre riding a dinosaur?'
I made the Halberd from an Orc sword, with the back spike bit from an ironfist. The shoulderpad is ripped from one of the first models I ever painted, which is why it has all those weird red bits. I also tried to add as much equipment and baggage to the model as possible. One thing that really struck me from their army book, is that Ogres are incredibly nomadic, and they will pretty much carry everything they need with them to battle, to go out hunting, whenever they are travelling. They will have slabs of meat hanging off their belts, they'll have food, equipment, hanging off them, even if it means having to hook stuff into their skin. So, despite the fact that the Carnosaur serves as a deadly mount in battle, it is still used as a beast of burden.
It's not really obvious from these photos, but I also really tried to make everything a bit more grounded in reality. The shoulder pads and the sword are all strapped to rings that are attached to the ogre's skin, rather than simply being there. Finally, I made the reins out of some cheap jewellery chain, which was worked pretty well, I think.
Hopefully by friday (Australia time), I'll have it painted. I'm not sure what colour to do the dinosaur though. Probably a red or a blue. Thanks for reading. (also, I've smoothed out the greenstuff a bit more, so that it no longer has those nasty fingerprints)

Thanks guys.
@Andilus What better a way to break a beast to one's will than to break it's back? Anyway, Ogres don't go for long term durability. They understand that one day, everything will break, everything will wear out, and they'll have to get something new. So, this ogre realises that one day the Carnosaur will die, and he'll be on foot, and he'll have to find something new. Why try to prolong the inevitable by giving it a bit of a lighter load? They are all very single minded.
@Petee Wiggin Yeah, it is a bit. It does look quite a bit better with an undercoat on, but whenever I get close to finishing something, I get so excited about having the finished product that I tend to rush it. But I reckon that a bit of paint will smooth everything out.

You know, I'm reasonably sure that you could have a member of any fantasy army riding a dinosaur (fluff wise). Just say they went to Lustria. The only army that would be difficult to justify would be Bretonians, and maybe Empire. Although they can ride dragons, and I'm sure that there would be some sort of general who would be crazy enough to ride a Cold One, or even something bigger. There was a Chaos army in WD a while back that had their leader riding a Carnosaur, Beastmen have half dragon centaur things, which counts, Lizardmen is a no brainer, undead can have undead dragons, skaven can probably build some sort of dinosaury... thing, Dark elves already do, normal elves and other elves have dragons, Tomb Kings could maybe have some sort of undead lizard. Oh, and dwarfs wouldn't really, as they don't tend to ride anything, but I could imagine one of them riding some sort of cave dwelling lizard, just for laughs. Something that slinks a bit closer to the ground, but still gives them a bit of height and an advantage in tunnel fights.

Well considering it costs quite a lot of skinks their lives to get the carnosaur eggs from which their carnosaurs are hatched (not the mention finding them is also hard because they're a reasonable rarity) and the fact that the mother will eat your head off on sight, just saying they went to Lustria is a bit lazy.
If you're going to create fluff to justify having a carnosaur then at least make an effort to detail how they stole the egg and raised the hatchling (capturing a hatchling would be nearly impossible, especially if it runs off or the mother eats it (as in not uncommon with some animals) or just don't bother to justify it with anything other than the RoC; i'd much rather play with someone who said "It looks cool." or "I actually wrote a short story about it..." than someone who said "Well he went to Lustria and found it."

Well, Ogres have a great history of 'domesticating' beasts by finding them when they are young, and repeatedly beating them over the head, riding them to exhaustion and generally wearing them out until they submit. And I mean, compare the size difference between a skink and an ogre. An Ogre could totally take that carnosaur mother, especially if it has a bit of experience fighting other sorts of beasts. Skinks would have a bunch of sacrificial guys to lure the mother away, while the others go to grab the eggs. An ogre basically sidesteps the carnosaur's charge, then proceeds to bash them repeatedly until dead or subdued, and then steals the egg. Ogres are actually quite skilled at hunting, having a history of killing things that pretty much refuse to die.
'Going to Lustria' is only part of the story. The rest is all implied.

Carnosaurs are the only known natural predator of Stegadons, if that means anything to you (as you seem to think that an Ogre = A female Carnosaur who is having their nest raided, "the rage of a carnosaur mother is without compare" being the phrase from their LM book entry). They're also pretty damn big, being 30 feet from snout to tail and a good number of feet tall.
I also assume the skinks rely solely on their size + their speed and knowledge of the surrounding jungle (something that the Ogres will not have) as opposed to luring the mother away (which we don't know even works, they're far from stupid enough to be lured away from their eggs). Ogres would then have to outrun or kill the enraged mother, a task which is easier for skinks again due to size, speed and jungle knowledge, and probably why they don't send saurus/kroxigors to do it.
You're seeing ogres through rose-tinted glasses in this scenario, an Ogre would not simply sidestep the carnosaur and take the egg, he would have the rage of the top predator of the lustrian jungle come down on him like a ton of bricks.

Well, I will admit that I do tend to regard Ogres as the some of the most dangerous beings in the warhammer world, and some amount of rose-tinted vision is most certainly going on... Among the stronger and more dedicated oges, it is not uncommon for them to be able to effortlessly lift the equivalent of a full grown rhinoceros, it is not uncommon for them to be able to traverse the mountainous areas in which they live at pretty much a running pace, it is not uncommon for them to scale sheer cliff faces using only their bare hands, and it is not unheard of for them to kill packs of saber-toothed cats which are larger than horses, single-handed with only a club. They have incredibly thick skin, heavy musculature and bones that allow them to survive horriffic injury, and keep on fighting. They grow up in the most hostile land in the warhammer world, baring deep into the chaos wastes. These aren't like human hunters. They are intelligent, finely honed killing machines. When they hunt, they hunt with all the ferocity of a beast, and the intelligence of a human. In fact, when it comes to hunting, they are even more intelligent than humans. I'm not saying that any ogre could do it, but one of the white dwarfs had a tale of an ogre maneater that went to lustria and killed a giant lizard like it weren't no thang. Mind you, that was a stegadon, but hell, he didn't even have to sidestep it. Just bashed it over the head as it was charging him. But all right, as much as I like to leave things unsaid and sort of implied, you have made me think about this some more. Maybe there were two of them who fought the beast. With one of them leading it and the other attacking it's flank, keeping it trapped, it isn't inconceivable that at least one would survive long enough to deal it a killing blow and steal its eggs. Especially if they attacked at night, when it was cold, and the Carnosaur's cold-bloodedness slowed it down a bit. And especially if he was a veteran of Lustria and had spent a few campaigns there. There's always demand for mercenaries in Lustria, and ogres are some of the best that you can hire. Maybe the mercenary outfit that he was with raided a temple and managed to find some strange eggs. Maybe they managed to find a breeding centre. There are many ways to procure an egg by going to lustria. @Kingcracker, I'm not really sure what it would count as. Maybe a Rhinox rider if I can dig out that white dwarf, but I mostly made him for the model. I might make some rules up at some point, but that'll only involve looking up the Carnosaur's stats. Edit: lalabox wrote:Oh, and dwarfs wouldn't really, as they don't tend to ride anything, but I could imagine one of them riding some sort of cave dwelling lizard, just for laughs. Something that slinks a bit closer to the ground, but still gives them a bit of height and an advantage in tunnel fights. I just realised that I have the perfect model for this. I'm going to do this if I can find a dwarf model. Everyone should ride dinosaurs.

I have all these ogres and not a single one riding a dinosaur... What's wrong with me? I must run out and fetch me a dinosaur, soonish.
It's really easy to imagine an Ogre subduing nearly any animal; heck they beat on giants for the larfs. That and the fluff for Maneaters has them ranging all over the world thus why they have Cathayan Longswords and cool models like the ninja ogre.

Ogres are woefully understated in fluff. Fighting even an ogre bull is a terrifying concept for most regular humans, considering the fact that they regularly domesticate rhinoxen, which are MASSIVE. Not to mention as well as fighting, it's probably trying to eat you at the same time. There's a reason they're so highly sought-after for bodyguards.

For the dwarf, I'm using an old (really old) Lizardmen salamander. I haven't got it finished, and I'll need to raid a friend's bitz box before I can get all the dwarvern bits. It's mostly going well because I figured out which bits I'm probably going to use. Probably the legs and body from the cannon set, because they are the most symmetrical, but even then, any bit is going to require a lot of sculpting to get it right.
For the rules for the Ogre, I'll probably use him either as a rhinox rider, or just give him some new rules just for funsies. And for the dwarf, well, mostly I just make these things for the model. I don't really think that there would be anything that'd work as a 'counts-as', especially now that dogs of war are gone.
