No dangling legs, no stupid armatures. Just smooth armor surfaces and massive guns. I debated not putting the terminator head in that slot, but in the end I lazied out and did it. It's just been base sprayed Boltgun Metal and more paint will hit it very soon. Would love to know what people think. Be brutally honest, I can take it.

Oh and here's my first actual Grey Knight. Notice what's missing? Those storm bolters look kinda awful.

Nice conversion. You can say the terminator head is a sensor cluster, like the head on a Tau Crisis Suit.

Would you be able to use that in a game?..Since it's base size has been reduced that is.

Pretty cool though, I want to try jimmy-ing the front of a Drednaught onto a Dreadknight to see if that improves the way it looks!

The guns are a little big for my taste, but I like what you did with the chest. Yeah, it's obviously an eldar bit, but I think it works alright. If I build one of these, I'm debating putting a head on top, if it's going to look like a gundam, might as well go all the way. But again, that's just my taste.

So are you using this as a dread knight? Cause if you are it is now illegal to use since you put it on a smaller base.

This with a bit of "De-Templar-Ing" would look good on the top of it I think!

Not too bad. Hell anything that removes the dumb looking external pilot is an improvement.

When I first heard of the concept of the Dreadknight, this thing came to mind:

Yeah I forgot to mention the base. I put it on a Dreadnought base in case I ever want to play it as a Dreadnought in another marine army. The Dreadnought base then can lock into the normal sized Dreadknight/Stormraven/Valkyrie base as shown below.

Yeah I noticed that too after I just took the second photo. One of the thigh plates is too far to the side. Fixing it right now...

I think I would have used a different bit for the chest piece. Its a bit strange having a lot of heavy armour and then a couple of ultra-big intake vents right up front. Having said that it is a huge improvement over the standard kit.

Another bit that looks a bit funny is the ammo feed into the gun on the Left arm. It looks like some kind of macro-bore cannon, and yet is fed from a tiny little ammo feed (or am I mis-understanding the weapon?).

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

I basically extended the barrel with a few bits that are about the same diameter as the entire gun was. I could increase the size of the ammo feed if it really looks that silly.

As for intake vents, I've seen lots of powered armor have intake vent looking things on the chest including Starcraft Terran marines and Robotech veritechs (though I guess they have a good excuse since they transform into jet planes). I'm glad that they're at least an improvement over the baby carrier though. Maybe on the next two I won't put the intake grills in, but fill the holes with something else.

The panel at the front makes it look like an eldar thing for sure, also the guns are way too long, waht do the dreadknights look like if you just leave off the grey knight pilot???

That ^^^. Its for the 3 3/4 inch action figure series. It just happens to be a perfect size for a dreadknight. As soon as I read the description my eyes went to the Hulkbuster. I could picture a GK inside the body, like a Tau battlesuit. Just take that toy, repaint it, add some dreadknight bits and some GK icons.

Bravo! I think the OP's model looks infinitely better than the crappy, transformer-ish dreadknight. That one model (the GW dreadknight), along with the orange monkey model have turned me off from what was once one of my favorite armies.

I pose this to people who think the front looks too "Eldary". If you had never seen an Eldar model before, like you were being introduced to GW minis for the first time, would the chest plate modification I made really look out of place? I was weighing whether or not to use Dreadnought plates on the front, but Eldar and Tau parts seemed to match the smooth, non-industrial riveted look, that the Dread Knight has much better. When I make conversions, I don't worry about what race the parts come from and would rather match the parts to the whole model. That's the effect I was going for and if I was successful, the model should look like it goes together naturally, regardless of where the parts come from. We all have the bias that we know where the parts come from, and I'm wondering if the model works the way I've done it if that bias is removed.

I really like what you have done with it. When I first saw the dreadknight model I thought it was absolutely beautiful save for the poor guy in termie armour strapped to the front like a hood ornament.

Any chance we can get a parts list?

I think the reason the chest plate/cover thingy doesnt look right is because it doesnt match up with the rest of the chest. It just kinda sticks out. It would probably look fine if it were shaped to the chest.

Yeah, without greenstuff and extensive plastic card work, that would be hard to do. I thought it looked organic enough to pass and not stick out too badly.

Zuul wrote:I really like what you have done with it. When I first saw the dreadknight model I thought it was absolutely beautiful save for the poor guy in termie armour strapped to the front like a hood ornament.

The chest is the back plate of an Eldar War Walker. I actually clipped off a lot of the intake plate and just stuck the intakes through. It made the piece fit better.

Around the waist are parts from a Tau Crisis suit back pack. You can see the exhaust ports from the side elements of the jetpack.

The head is sticking out of a sarcophagus or whatever you call it from a plastic marine venerable dreadnought. It's the one that allows for a Marine helmet to stick out on the venerable dread.

The thigh plates are the square sarcophagus plates also from the Marine Venerable Dreadnought.

There are Tau shoulder pads where those doofy armatures pop out of the shoulders.

The psilencer has three Predator autocannon barrels put together to look like a mini gun.

The Psycannon extension is two hinges from a Marine drop pod hatch clipped off and glued together. What I consider my awesomest moment converting the Dread Knight because I was flabbergasted as to how to make the Psycannon longer. I toyed with Battlecannon barrels and the such when I just looked in my bits box, saw that hatch, and it just hit me. I think the psycannon looks pretty awesome like that.

I don't know if this has been suggested before or done before (I have avoided GK topics entirely) but if you don't like the cockpit could you not just use the chasis of a dreadnought?

Quite a nice conversion though, doesn't quite float my boat, but I can appreciate the piece overall.

Two suggestions to make the chest plate look less "Eldar" in nature.

Scrape off the gems/bumps. That will help a LOT, as they are a design element unique to the eldar.

Add some etched brass from Forge World. Imperial eagles, GK imagery, whatever. Add some purity seals too.

You could strap a pantsless ork on something and make it look Imperial with enough Aquillas and Purity Seals.

I actually tried this at first as I have a Dread torso lying around. There are two problems:

1) The proportions aren't quite right. The top ends up looking really stunted. I am sure people will do this, but I don't think it looks right. You also end up with a very angular, industrial looking top and very futuristic, sleek looking legs. This again, doesn't make it look right in my mind. I kind of wanted to keep the streamlined rounded look of the model intact which is why I used Tau/Eldar parts.

2) You're talking about a very expensive conversion. If you actually buy both models, which you might as well do for the parts, it's about $100. Even getting the bits only it would add $20 to the cost of the model.

Another good case for using the sentinel cockpit...they are available on ebay for $3 each, with around $2.50 shipping. That adds a whole $5.50 to the dreadknight. Some careful shopping on ebay nets you a converted dreadknight for equal or less than regular retail.

Yeah the sentinel cockpit has more of a Star Wars feel, which is more futuristic and far less industrial looking. You probably could build a Dread Knight for less than $20 if you jumbled all the parts together off bits sites and ebay. It would end up looking pretty jumbled together if you had that tight a budget though, and the unique futuristic style of the Dread Knight is what drew me to it. There aren't any models in GW range that look anything like it and certainly nothing comes close in the Marine or IG ranges.
