Hey just wondering if anyone has a tutorial or a good highlight escalation for black. I have never done a cloak black and I'm assuming it should work up from chaos black mixing with codex grey until a final thin highlight of 1/1 codex grey fortress grey? I'm trying to come up with this on my own but this is going on my Archon and I don't really have any test cloaks etc. Have looked all over youtube and spent last night looking on forums, couldn't find much. The closest idea of what I'm trying to do is the type of black on the eldar seer council. But I'm kind of wondering if it would not look better with shadow grey/space wolves grey instead of the other grey mixes. While I know this would give it a blueish tint I think it may look good, if anyone knows of a model with this type of black highlight can you post a pic?

Hope someone has some helpful tidbits, thanks.

If you use grey it can come out looking too cold for material. Try mixing in dwarf flesh to the black this will give you a softer look . And for hard blacks eg. Armour plates use hawk turquoise .

You mean mixing dwarf flesh with chaos black for the basecoat and then working up with grey? Sounds like it would need to be at least 2:1 black to dwarf flesh. Have you ever tried it with shadow grey for a dark blueish/black? and I'm not doing any black armor plates just the cloak black.

Here is a front and back of the model so far, I really did not want to do the cloak all black but I'm not sure what other colors would look good with the colors he already has. Ideally I wanted 2 different colors, one on the inside and one on the outside of the cloak but I cannot think of any that will look good other than all black, he has too much red on him for either side to be red I think, and I think blue would be the same deal but I dunno. If you have any ideas let me know, I really like the way they did dual color cloaks for the Archon(s) in the codex.

Note: Nothing has been layered or highlighted yet other than the huskblade which was my very first attempt at a NMM power sword type look. Everything else is basecoated and washed other than the cloak O.o.

Forget the grey all together . Use the dwarf flesh as your highlight medium. The main things people get wrong when painting black is that .then they cant work out why it just looks dark grey .
If you want the black to look blacker than chaos black then add a bit of dark blue to the mix for the shadows.

I would do an undercoat of black and bring it up with very, very dark grey. No until the final hightlight would I use a medium grey.

Thanks, I also attempted NMM gold for the first time on one of my wood elf highborns.....it did not pan out as well as my archon sword did and he now needs to be stripped lol.

As for the cloak, I am thinking of trying to use like 2:1 black to shadow grey in the recess then work out of the recesses just a touch with that and then begin on the codex grey and black layering with a final highlight of just codex grey. Curnow if I could see a pic of what dwarf flesh in the mix looks like that would help, I just can't see it though.
