Rushed a Lord Commissar for Standish. He's in sort of rough shape and I didn't put any time into fixing him up since I got him secondhand. I did some rudimentary greenstuffing and gave him a moustache though.

I'm painting up a valhallan team also and using them as liberation era/korean war era Chinese, this thread has really taught me how to paint these models and which to buy, due to huge ebay prices i think i maybe forced to get some cadians and greenstuff them so it wont be as complete (or well painted for that matter) as yours. One pain is finding all the HWTs, for example i have 3 mortar teams but only one has a mortar >.> so i'm forced to use ones from the cadian box...i'm not sure how they will fid that fat ass bomb in todays skinny tubes! Anyway pictures of them are slowly appearing on my page so feel free to vote and offer advise

Valhallans mortars are typically really easy to find, since every box set came with one. If you weren't in China I'd offer to send a couple your way! Also, if you want to get the Valhallan look with Cadian bodies, Pig Iron makes some heads with ushankas:

Reinforcements have arrived:

That right there is five boxes of Scions and 3 Tauroxes. I'm going to go for a Militarum Tempestus army fitting the aesthetic of the Valhallans, and allying with them frequently.

Good to see this army grow.

What colours are you going for?

I think I'm going to go for white armor plates and BDUs the same color as the Valhallan greatcoats. I just primed the melta squad yesterday!

Well I just finished going through this whole thing for the second time today. I'm impressed to say the least. I'm in the process of tracking down as many classic metal cadians as I can. Making something of a pseudo WW2 Japanese army out of them. Finding them has proven to be a bit of a challenge as mostly everyone that has the old models doesn't want to part with them, or its just the castoffs from their army that they no longer need. I find myself with around 5 heavy bolter teams when I didn't want to run any.... what can you do I guess. All that aside I'm blown away by how good all of the Valhallans look. Excellent job!

I'll be around waiting for the next update. Not much else to do aside from paint FoW stuff anyways

Just my 2 cents

Glad you've been enjoying the project! If you look at my retro Ultramarines blog linked in my sig, you'll see there's plenty of classic Cadians in the latter pages. Some models are definitely harder to find - for instance, even people who don't have retro IG manage to have Valhallan mortars, so I've got more of them than I know what to do with. As for Cadians, I'll send you a PM. I might have a few in need of a home.

Finished my second squad of Stormtroopers:

There's one more squad of stormies, one command squad, one commissar, and three Tauroxes left to paint before the formation is fieldable. I've built the second Taurox and the command squad, but it's the Commissar I'm excited about next:

I liked the new plastic Commissar, but he didn't totally fit in with the new Scions models. I also wanted every model in this detachment to have a rebreather on, so I trimmed down the head with a rebreather and beret and fit the plastic Commissar's giant hat on top of that. I also swapped his legs out for a more armored and dynamic set from the Scions kit.

SRM you should cast that helmet up. It's too good to keep to yourself!

Actually, I might do that. It looks simple enough.

It's already glued to his body so I don't think I'll be taking it off to get a cast! It wasn't too difficult though, just took some fairly fiddly work with a knife.

They look great in the White. The Taurox becomes 1000% better in those colours.

Thanks! I'm pretty sure I've said it before, but I think that people would've reacted to the Taurox way better if it wasn't in baby blue when GW debuted it.

Painted up the command squad for my Stormtrooper detachment. Kinda unhappy with the photography, but once I paint their ride and/or finish this detachment, I'll get some better photos. Was really fun to paint the officer with his greatcoat and pimp cane though:

10 Scions, one Commissar, and 2 Tauroxes to go, then I can move on to the REAL fun project...

I never liked the Taurox model. But you certainly made them look good. Guess I will have to revise my opinion about it now.

So maybe I'm missing something, but how do you distinguish one squad from another?

Hey, glad I could change your mind! The paintscheme is really key; I feel if they didn't release it in baby blue people would like it more.
 Warboss_Waaazag wrote:

Keep them far away from each other I don't have anything in mind unfortunately. They don't have much room for squad markings since they're so gussied up and loaded with detail as is. My Valhallan infantry don't have anything either, which can get confusing in tight deployment zones.

You could always buy some wheels from (I think) Zinge. I believe they have a conversion kit.

Really nice work.

Looking at the Taurox makes me wonder why GW have this fixation with infantry disembarking right in front of their transport's weapons (see also; Land Raider)

Maybe put the squad markings on the base rim?

It's something they came up with after the Horus Heresy. With the potential for even Astartes to go rogue, it's an important countermeasure to put the largest weapons right behind the doors infantry get out of.
Failing that, I think the designers just didn't know where to put the extra guns

I've never been a fan of that approach, honestly. It feels... immersion breaking? I don't know the right term for it.
