I'm thinking of writing something for the Black Library's open submissions period, and I wanted to know if anybody had an answer to a couple of questions...
1) Are there any pictures of Space Marines without their armor on? I would assume they don't wear it when they're just on the ship, waiting to get to their next destination... Though I could be wrong, I suppose.
2) Is there any source on what the "bridge" of an Imperium warp-vessel looks like? I understand what the Navigators do and everything, but I don't quite know how that's situated... Does the Navigator have a special room or something? Is the Navigator "driving?"
Thanks for the help.

1) Not really many good drawings of Marines without their armor on.
When they're in transit or 'on break' they tend to wear a simple hooded robe or surplice. Think of Forge World's Inquisitor Lok for this...just 'bigger'.
2) Like a bridge? There's a few drawings from the Battlefleet Gothic books, but I don't have easy access to them.
It's basically laid out, from what I remember, like the bridge of a Star Destroyer. The Navigator part gets you the answer of "what size of ship?". Some are said to have what amounts to no more than a little hole in the wall that the Navigator/Astropath sits in while others have a whole chamber devoted to just the Navigator.

the BL rules on GWs website have drawings of ship bridges.
they usually consist of the Captain being on a large chair in the center which is the ships helm.
the Navigator's compartment is next to, or directly above, the captains chair.
this is in the middle of a large deck with rows of cogicator interfaces manned by bondsmen and/or servitors.
there may be several levels of these interface modules depending on the size of the ship.
the Navigator's compartment has a window to the outside of the ship for observation of the warp that is only visible from inside the compartment.
the bridge will have large observation windows that can be closed with heavy shutters.

OK. I'm looking at a Strike Cruiser from Battlefleet Gothic, so that's the size of ship I'm looking at -- roughly a capacity of maybe 250 or so. (100 marines, 200 serfs, and then figure the actual crew of the Navigator and servitors comes to 30 or so, with some room to spare.)
"Like a Star Destroyer" is pretty much the answer I was hoping for, thankfully. I figured there'd be a bunch of servitors milling about on the lower deck, and the Navigator in a special raised room above them.

keep in mind that a Strike Cruiser is easily 10 times the tonnage of a Star Destroyer.
a Strike Cruiser is able to deploy a single company almost instantly. the actual ship is quite capable of holding many more marines.

A Strike Cruiser or a Battle Barge? I'm just going off of what I saw in the BFG book. It seemed like Strike Cruisers carry a company of marines and then the Battle Barges can carry several companies.

Yea but It still takes several thousand serfs to crew it.
A Imperial navy cruiser has a crew of anywhere between 1,000-25,000.

It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |

and a battlecruiser can be upwards of 1 million. Automatically Appended Next Post: Aldheim wrote:A Strike Cruiser or a Battle Barge? I'm just going off of what I saw in the BFG book. It seemed like Strike Cruisers carry a company of marines and then the Battle Barges can carry several companies.
thats currently, but the ships are quite capable of carring many more marines then that.
a Strike Cruiser has the capacity to deploy an entire company by Drop Pod at one time. the actual transport capacity in the hold is much larger.

From what I've read (James Swallow's Blood Angels Onibus), the Captain is a Space Marine who is bionically attached to the ship, and he has almost full control of the ship, where it acts as his body, he sees, smells, and hears through monitors and sensors, his fists are torpedo tubes, etc. I'd think the bridge would have his chair with servitors performing some minor duties.

1) Dark Angels Codex, by the entry for Azrael: You see a dead marine in the nude.
2) Depends on the ship... If you want a picture of a Battle Barge:

Stated by Grey Templar:The Ward of the Codices
"It began, with the writing of the Great Codices,
2 were given to the Eldar. Immortal, Capricious, and most farsighted of all,
2 also to Chaos. Traitorous, Deceitful, Servants of the Dark Gods,
3 to the Xenos races. T'au, Orks, and Necrons. the Young, the Beast, and the Spiteful,
7 to the race of men. Servents of the God Emperor, the Inheritors of the Galaxy.
But they were all of them, decieved. for another Codex was written…
In the Land of Ward'or, in the Fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Matthew wrote in secret, a Master Codex, to rule all the others. One by one, all the armies of the other Codices fell to the power of the Codex, and from this Darkness, none could see hope.
But there were some, who resisted. a Last Alliance of Men and Xenos took up arms against the forces of Ward'or and on the Slopes of Mount Doom they fought for the freedom of 40k." |
