Hello iv been persuaded by my pal Ben to post some of my armys on here to singe thee eyeballs and make you all squirm with terror The grand plan is to get both out armys painted up in time for my holls in August so we can get a game. I'm not much of a a painter (as you'll see) and the concept of washes and using more than one colour are alien to me but thought i would give this painting lark a go so it doesen't look like a 3 year old had got a hold of my models when placed next to superspuds immaculately painted ones lol

They look good!

They are very tidy and you've kept between the lines well.
However I would strongly suggest that you give your fire warriors, devilfish, battlesuits etc a wash of devlan mud.

Hope that helps.

Everyone check this out it's really cool:

Actually, I agree with the above statement to a degree, but only wash into the recesses. That colour is perfect for Tau, clean, right shade everything, so you want to keep things simple and add depth, just lightly wash into the recesses with Devlan Mud.

I would either shade them or hard edge highlight them and draw in the armour seams with a fine pen.

Dude if this was the paintjob of a 3 year old i would be heralding him as the next (insert famous painter). But yes they could be greatly enchanced by a wash of devlan mud or some highlighting.

Thanks for the tips, quite like the clean look as i think it makes them look more alien but will try and dirty one up a bit and see how it goes as my TAU don't look like they have seen many battlefields at the mo

I think 'dirty up' is the wrong interpretation of their advice. Don't let the name 'devlan mud' fool you, it can be used for more than just dirt.

Using a dark wash in the recesses will provide contrast, an effect that really pops and is attractive to the eye. You can keep the clean look of the plates while darkening the crevices, it could really make a model look complete.

That said, I'm impressed with that clean look you've given your battlesuits.

Totally agree with this. The name "Devlan mud" seems a bit misleading.

As some other people have stated, it would also good to do a single, simple edge highlight.

Also, don't put yourself down. To become good at painting anything, you need to practise, practise, practise. Your painting is a lot better than a 3 year old's.

Hay folks cheers for the advice tried putting some devlan mud into the recesses of a battlesuit and was amazed at the difference.

I like the idea of putting a highlight on as folk have suggested, any suggestions? the suits/infantry are painted with Tausept Ochre then a Graphione Saphia wash (apologies for the spelling but can't be bothered to dig the paints out to spell them properly followed by a coat of Vomit Brown over the top.

And to highlight do you just paint around the bottom edges of the model of is it every outside edge that gets a highlight??

cheers!

Sounds good, in terms of highlighting I would either go for a mixture of vomit brown and bleached bone, or just a thin line of bleached bone.
Look forward to seeing them when their done.

My suggestion would be to clean off the edges of your bases. With the basing material randomly scattered on the base's sides, it looks sloppy, in my opinion, and it really detracts from the model. Scrape it off with your hobby knife and repaint the rims.

I would recommend getting a very fine black pen and going over the lines. Washes don't work as well on tau because of all the flat areas (especially on the white which you have done very well) .
