So I was bored while taking an all-nighter, and somewere in between listening to the voices in my head telling my I couldn't hide it and looking outside the windows killing off illusions only I could see with a shotgun only I had could see I painted this guy up. Pictures aren't the best, and it has that "I was really tired and on the line of going mad while painting it" look, I still like it. Its WIP, I still have left to to 2nd highlights, finish the sword and do some touch ups.

C&C welcome!

EDIT: Swapped out the pictures with Gitsplittas tweaked ones, thanks man!

The sword looks cool, but you really can't see the marine.

I like him Gretar, man your painting has really improved. The sword looks great and the shading/highlighting on the armor and weapons is very nice. I also like the pose, not over-the-top but definitely dynamic. Excellent.

PM'd you a tweaked version of your pics that lightens them up a bit. They aren't perfect, but it should give readers (like Marshall Ragnar) something to chew on.

Thank you I'll get some better pictures up when he's all finished

Thank you I was trying to go for a not to over the top kinda deal. I hardly ting its LOS legal though, he's a marine and a half in height on that base hahaha

Thanks for the pictures as well, hope I get some more comments on this now

Sure he's legal. Remember that kind of stuff works both ways... if he can see he can also be seen, making him harder to hide in cover. Besides, really the only way that could be considered "modeling for advantage" is if he had a long range weapon... which he doesn't. So you're fine!

Actually both of my GMS plasma cannons are mounted up on rocks... but since I didn't do either of them, it wasn't anything I could control. If someone objects I can always "sight" from lower down on the model... so it's no biggie.

Well, I guess you're right. I dont do gaming at all nowadays, which would explain me going with the very much "straight from the book" rules

I definately like it - the sword patterning looks really effective. I also like the painting of the rock - the contrast between it and the model really works whereas I don't think grass would have. A really good start to the model.

Okay, I've been on a bit of a hiatus 2011-14

Green and red don't mix very well, generally. Although they're complimentary, they make people think "Christmas" nine times out of ten. Also, you've got a more "army" green and a red that doesn't really fit. I'd try doing a yellow instead, but that's just me.

Those new pics are much better gretar. Well done.

I don't mind the greenish bronze and red so much, though the red chest eagle looks wrong to me. My advice is to either leave the chest eagle the same color as the armor, or make it something like silver or gold.

All-in-all he looks very good though, your painting has really come a long way.

Red and green have never made me think of Christmas.. with the exception of something that actually is connected to Christmas, and I don't think that a Space Marine makes any connection to peace and happiness, at least not from my point of view. And I really hate doing yellow, which is why I try my best to not do any. And how does army green not fit with a war miniature? Thanks for the comment though!

Thanks man! Since its you're miniature, I'll go ahead and try to do something with it. I think I'd rather go gold than silver though.

Just a suggestion gretar... I'm really happy with him and would rather have your vision of my own. It was just an aesthetic comment based on my preferences.

Well.. to late now, I've already put down the first gold layer If I don'd find it working for me though, I'll change it back to the red. You'r comment might also be based on the fact that I had barely highlighted the chest eagle when the picture was taken, It looks that much better with some blood red highlighting!

Well, why didn't you post a pic of that *before* changing it??

You're allowed to defend your position you know... you ARE the artist after all!

New pictures!

Here he is! He's not finished, I'm thinking about free handing some design on his cloth. Thought was the Inquisition symbol on the bottom of it. His face has now gotten a tattoo, Mike Tyson-ish style. I also made further highlights, painted the gem on his sword and put a transfer sheet on his shoulderpad.

I really like the gold eagle - it makes the model seem more 'solid', if you get what I mean. It seems less cartoony and more agressive. Personally, I would not add much static grass, if any, it could easily clash with the green of the model and look out of place.

Im thinking about putting just a little to cover one or two mistakes I did on the rock. I would normally just fix them, but that would require me to repaint the whole thing, and I'm a lazy type so I wont

One glaring issue.... mold line on the inside of his right arm!

Only YOU can fix that!! (I'd never be able to duplicate your paint scheme).

He's finished!(or just about that..)

I fixed the moldline, did further highlights on the face tattoo, did a little flocking on his base and did a freehand Inquisition symbol on his cloth.

He's kind of tough to make out but I can see the free-hand on his loin cloth... nice! It's a bit hard to make out his head in the midst of the tatoo, but when I get him I'll take a proper pic once his shoulder pad is on.

Really nice gretar... thank you!

In the third picture from your most recent post...is there another something that "only YOU can see" under his foot? Because it kind of looks like it is just hovering, like he's overstepping the rock a bit.

Just my two cents, other than that it looks fine.

Well, I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to say, but the marine is not hovering over the rock. However, his whole foot isn't stepping on it either. Just a small bit of his right foot and about half of his left foot. Which could explain the illusion that he might look like he's hovering in the pics. IRL he isn't however, I assure you that!

And before people start rambling about how unstable the miniature must be then, please don't. The base is custom made out of sparkle, and there is a pin running down from the base of the base and up to the knee of the marine. The pin is stuck to the base with a mix of superglue and sparkle, and the marine is stuck on the in with some superglue gel, which is supposedly stronger that regular superglue.
