This is the first test I've given my new Grey Knights, unfortunately they are still a work in progress, so there's a fair bit of proxy and imagination needed. I have a blog over
here if you're interested in seeing them develop.
So the game was a 1750 point battle against my arch nemesis, Rob. The game was a very relaxed one and not played in any serious manner, so please don't analyze our tactical choices in any depth. Rob only created his list this morning so it's in no way refined, he just wanted something different from his usual Vulkan one. I would like to think my list is a bit more refined, but there's plenty of room for improvement.

1 x Grand Master Mordak, 4 x Ghost Knights
1 x Inquisitor, 3 x Servo Skulls
5 x Purifiers, 2 x Psycannon, 1 x Rhino
5 x Terminators, 3 x

DH, 1 x Psycannon
5 x Strikes, 1 x Psycannon, 1 x Psy Razorback
5 x Strikes, 1 x Psycannon, 1 x Psy Razorback

5 x Tactical Marines, Razorback,
TL LC
3 x Land Speeder,
MM,
HF (All single units)
1 x Vindicator
We agreed to play that the Dreadknights Doomfists were S10 and that he could shunt during a scout move, we also agreed that Gate of Infinity could be used from within the Rhino, so please don't debate these rules.
Due to the proxying I really did have a Ghost Knight:
But anyway, on to deployment. We played Capture and Control and agreed pitched battle. However we added a twist with a 3rd objective in the middle; to prevent sitting in your base and boring draws. I rolled a 6 and took first turn. I put my servo skulls in a nice line down the center then everything lined up in the middle with 5 Strikes in the ruins holding my objective *cough* Dire Avengers!. Mordrak would deepstrike in as would the 5 Terminators.
Rob decided to box himself into the corner, with his objective at the back. Combat squadding the 10 man unit with a
ML in on level 1.
My dreadknight scout moved (using Mordraks grand strategy rule) to within 12" of the Melta Sternguards, hoping the tank would explode and he could assault them. I forgot to move the other one 6".
Modrak came in behind the cover and ran into it. Everything else just moved on up.
Something managed to wreck the Sternguards Rhino and the Dreadknight proceeded to assault them, hoorah. He took out 3 of them and saved 3 2+ saves. They passed their
LD test.
Rob then took a wound off the second Dreadknight with his Vindicator, and assaulted the other with his Terminators (needing a 6 and bloody rolled one!). The Rhino with the purifiers got shaken and my Dread got blown sky high by Lascannon fire.
I got a bit lazy on the pictures so they don't show everything. Below is my turn 2, where Mordrak casted his reserves roll enhancer and the Terminators arrived. They scatterd a few inches forward of the Servo Skull, due to only one
D6. Mordrak moved out of cover, the theory being that with 10 terminators on the board he would have to choose which ones to focus down.
The Razorbacks advanced and deployed their Psycannons, the Purifiers did the same. The terminators passed their saves from the Purifiers shooting, one of the Razorbacks got shaken and the Vindicator lost its weapon and got stunned. Yey no templates!
Therefore Mordrak decided to run forward instead of shooting. The dreadknight moved back a couple of inches to make Rob question assaulting him with his Terminators. The Sternguard at the back also failed their
LD test, which you don't see every day, and ran off the board as they were right next to it. What a success!
Rob focused his firing on the 5 man squad of Terminators, bringing all 3 Land Speeders forward. It resulted in 2 dieing due to melta fire and the one with the sword, brought purely for his 4++ save, was the first to go! They passed their
LD test which was good news. His 3 Terminators did a little boogy and decided to stay in the same place.
It was now my turn 3, only the Terminators moved forward, advancing on the 3 Land Speeders. 2 of Robs Terminators died to psycannon fire, another Razorback got shaken and 2 Landspeeders died to shooting. Mordrak assaulted the last remaining one but could only stun it. Shame!
Again I seem to have missed a few pictures in the middle, or just on Robs turn really, what a nice opponent I am!
The lone
TH SS Terminator assaulted the Purifiers, but died before his I1 kicked in, got to love
PW and 2A each! I stupidly cast Cleansing Flame instead of Hammerhand on a single model with a 2+ save. Still I got away with it and learnt my lesson! My 5 man terminator squad got reduced to the lone psycannon guy, but he passed his
LD test. Rob drove his now redundant vindicator towards the middle objective and in his assault phase Mordrak blew the Landspeeder up, remembering hammerhand that time!
True to the casual spirit we were playing the game in, Rob made the best move ever here. Deciding to Warp Gate his Librarian out of his Rhino he scatted right onto my Dreadknight and its ridiculously large base. Rolled a 2 and lost them!
On Turn 4 I pushed up a bit, only managing to Stun his Vindicator again. The lone terminator took out the rest of the
ML squad after heavy bolter fire and Modrak blew up the Librarians now empty Rhino. Pedro attacked the lone Terminator, who failed to make a single wound and therefore couldnt
ID him, but then suffered a
PF to the face and died. His remaining 10 marines (2 squads) opened up on Mordrak and killed 1 Ghost Knight.
On Turn 5 the Vindicator finally blew up. Pedro had consolidated onto his objective so the Dreadknight assaulted him and splatted him into the ground. Modrak and his trusty Ghost Knights didn't shoot so they could multi assault and took out a fair few marines. They passed their
LD tests. Mordrak did lose a wound though and spawned a new Ghost Knight, ah what fun!
Rob, seeing the inevitability of defeat, decided to bring some humour into the game by tank shocking the dreadknight with his Razorback. On a roll of a 1 or 3 he'd die, but anything else and the Glory would be his. Thankfully he rolled a 2 and lived to see another day! In hindsight we actually screwed up here as we let the next Razorback do the same thing, forgetting the first one was in the way. Still, Rob was determined to kill it with a tank shock! Luckily I rolled a 6 and brought honour to the mighty dreadknight, standing in the carnage of 3 tanks, arggggh!
Mordrak finished the rest of the marines off and Rob conceded, well we thought he was tabled but that Razorback was technically still alive. Ah well.
Result: Grey Knight Win
It was an enjoyable game and a might victory for the Grey Knights, only losing a Dreadknight, Terminator Squad and a Dread. As stated at the start it was a very relaxed game and not played in any serious / tactical manner. However it's given me a good amount to think about.
The extra dreadknight without a teleporter was definitely not worth it. I thought this would be the case but wanted to test 2 out anyway. I think I may change him for another Dread, to imrove my shooting. Or add another 4 Terminators, resulting in 14 on the board, tasty.
Hope you enjoyed reading, next time I'll try and take some more pictures so there's a bit more continuity to it.
