Having painted my first marines I figured I'll continue with Chaos Space Marines, since they have more bling and some more spiky bits

So I fell in love with those lava bases from www.darkartminiatures.com:

I also remembered the orange crystals from the final StarCraft 2 missions, and thouht that would make a nice secondary basing scheme, e.g for the standard Chaos Space Marines:

thus I ordered those bases from www.evilmushroomgames.com, which I will paint grey for the base itself, together with orange crystals:

In order to get variation (e.g. for the aspiring champions, terminators, or terminator lords, I got the following bases, which I will then paint in matching colors.

From www.microartstudio.com:

From www.secretweaponminiatures.com

The darkartminiatures.com ice bases will be painted in subdued red/grey tones, sort of like cooled down lava.

In general, I like saturated colors with rather strong contrast for the highlighting, similar to my first marines:

Given that my bases are going to be orange and red, I picked blue as my primary army/armor colors, since it is a good contrast. I was at first considering green, which looks cool on what I've seen together with lava, but saturated green is not an evil color I think, so I went for blue instead. And I like golden metallic for the trim. It's so shiny.

I however didn't want to go with a stock color scheme, so I added troop type specific colors for the shoulder pads, helmets and shin guards. Note that non-armor pieces, such as the horns, are not finalized yet.

The standard Chaos Space Marines with purple as the secondary color, which should complement the bases and contrast the blue:

Khorne Berserkers with red as the second color, both to contrast the blue, but also complement the lava.

Aspiring champions for all squads, with black as the second color. For one, black makes them stand out, having replacable arms with matching colors across the troops is nice, since I plan to magnetize their weapons. I might keep the shin guards in the troop specific color though.

For the eyes, I am not decided yet, either I go with some sort of orange, or some sort of medium bright green.

I also plan to use black inked lichen as vegetation to make the bases more interesing

Fluff wise, I don't know, I suppose the Chaos Space Marines ravaged a planet, and turned it into an ashen waste land with lava breaking through the crust, causing the minerals to bloom out crystals, which they want to harvest to make gatorade. Or something.

Progress wise, I just de-sprued a CSM squad and will clean them over the weekend. My MM order with the chaos black spray should arive next week, as well as the remaining orders with the bases.

You're a lucky man! Starting a new army is always so exciting!

However, I'm a little confused by the bases you have presented. Are you using all of them? Seems like it would be hard to tie it all togethe (unless you were going for the lava/crystals/chaos/ice/ruins/vegetation look ) I'm not sure if paint will be enough to give it a really cohesive feel.

I don't know how I feel about the purple, but the red and black secondary colors look great, imo.

Let's see some pictures!

Right now the plan is to have bases per troop type, so:

Lava bases for the Khorne Berserkers
Crystal bases for one squad of Chaos Space Marins
Ice bases painted as subdued lava bases for the other squad of Chaos Space Marines
Chaos bases for the terminators
I will then test whether a runic base looks good for the terminator sorceror.

I also will have some spare crystals which I then can put on e.g. the lava bases to tie them into the theme.

I will paint the bases and the models indivudually, so I can experiment in the end before pinning them together.

I will do test models with each color scheme, we'll see how the purple will fare there. I've seen good looking purple/gold as the primary colors:
