Hi guys,

Just thought Id share my Imperial Fists so far. Its only a captain and 3 Sternguard but I think they are decent. I have still got to complete some details, eye lenses, gemstones, bases etc. Opinions welcome.

Cheers

What an utterly ingenious way of painting yellow! I may have to copy this.

I undercoated with Skull White and then a Devlan Mud wash over the white.

Armour plates were painted with Iyanden Darksun, Ogryn Flesh wash in the recesses to dirty them a bit, tidy up with Iyanden Darksun again and then highlight with Sunburst Yellow and thats it.

I think I'd tone down the highlight if I were you - probably move down to say, Golden Yellow. As it stands it's a little too bright for its own good, which is a shame because your actual painting quality is rock solid.

Hey Mackem,

Those Imperial Fists are looking very good! You don't have to change anything. However, here is my honest opinion:

If you do more in the future, you'll want to think about what you're highlighting the Iyanden Darksun with. Look at it this way: Iyanden Darksun and Sunburst Yellow are two completely different colours. It took me a while to figure it out, but it's like using pink to highlight red. Not as extreme as that, of course, but in theory exactly the same. You're best bet is to go with Bleached Bone or Deneb Stone. Mix it into the Iyanden Darksun at a ratio of 1:1 at a time. Even using straight Bleached Bone might look more natural, too. Don't worry, I totally understand, but it does make sense (Iyanden Darksun is quite a natural tone, and so is Bleached Bone. Golden Yellow - and especially Sunburst Yellow - are very flat, "factory" colours. Only pure white is good enough to highlight them).

Having said all of this, You're highlighting/neatness is absolutely top notch!!!! I'd recommend using a lighter tone of your yellow highlighting colour to exagurate the most extreme cases of the armour, really giving it a sense of where the light is falling from and increasing the contrast between the highlights and the shadows. It's even quicker and easier than painting all of the edges that you highlighted previously.

As always, look around for as much inspiration as you can. The internet is a fantastic tool for this. I've seen some of "girlpainting"'s Chaos Space Marine tutorial videos lately on YouTube, and the technique she uses for highlighting is just brilliant.

Keep up the fantastic work, Mackem

Cosmic.

Thanks for your detailed reply Cosmic.

It has taken me a while to get back into the painting and I had forgotten a lot of techniques. These are the first models ive painted for over 10 years. I will take your advice on board. Thanks again.

This is my librarian. Note I have had to change the weapon as it was a finecast model and his original weapon had some miscasting. I was going to still use it and try to paint it like it was damaged but instead I decided to use Hubron Blackhearts axe instead.

very nice! I would second the suggestion of toning down the highlights a little, maybe just making them a little paler so they dont jump out as much.

But purely by attempting yellow you're a braver man than i.

I use a white undercoat and then a devlan mud wash over the white and then a base coat of Iyanden darksun, leaving the wash in the recesses.
