Here is a WIP of some jet bikes I am working on for a commission...the client wanted a marble effect on the bikes...obviously there is still plenty of clean up on the bike themselves, but what do you think of the effect?

Instead of thinning down the paint with water, thin it down with rubbing alcohol to get this splotchy effect.

Looks great!

Yeah, that is what I used, it is relativity easy. I have done it before on 360 cases, gas tanks and other surfaces, just never something so small. The trick was to keep the paint fairly thin and lay down a heavy coat with the airbrush. Counter intuitive to how you normally apply paint with an airbrush.

Basically to achieve the effect you do the following;

1. Base-coat the model in the desired color, in this case gold. Let the paint dry.
1b. If you are not using a gloss based paint, then add a gloss coat to the surface. This technique really works well with a "slippery" foundation. If your base paint is a glass based paint proceed to step 2.

2. Apply your darker marble color... in this case I chose black, but nay color is cool, as long as it is the darker, alternatively you could put down a lighter color if your top color is going to be darker.
2b. If your paint is not glass based then add a glossy clear coat.

3. Apply your marble color, in this case I choose Vallejo Medium Blue.

4. QUICKLY before the paint can dry, take an appropriate size piece of plastic wrap and put it on the paint and proceed to "Scrunch" it up.

5. Remove plastic wrap and let dry.

6. When paint is dry, pick out details and add in marble veins.

7. Follow up with a nice clear coat!

Not quite, the alcohol will evaporate too fast.

That looks super sweet. In fact, I'm pretty sure there is a jetbike in a box somewhere at home and that makes me want to dig it out and give it a try. Or... I wonder what I could do to some giant spiders with that technique?

Should the blue/marble color be any thicker/thinner than normal?

I've seen a similar technique used by a guy that does trippy space scenes with spray paint. He feathers together an undercoat, lays on a thick cover, then dabs away an irregular pattern with glossy paper (crumpled magazine pages) while wet. Never would've thought to use a similar technique for marble on minis, but damn is that spiffy. I think a slightly more detailed and permanent tutorial is more than warranted, if you can spare the time.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I may do a tutorial at some point. I was actually thinking of doing a few different airbrushing tutorials, but time will tell.

I will definitely post pics of this project when it is complete.
