I'm a little confused about what color to paint my GK. According to my sources:

Their armour is left unpainted, leaving the silver-grey of the ceramite exposed. This tradition is thought to have originated from their desire to lead lives of absolute purity.

However,

Ceramite is a form of ceramic material, used in higher-end types of Imperial armour such as carapace armour, power armour and Terminator armour. Ceramite conducts almost no heat, making it especially heat-resistant and effective against energy-based weapons.

If this is true, well as we all know ceramic materials are well... ceramic. If it conducts no heat we can bet it is non-metallic and non-reflective. However every Grey Knight I have seen painted, even the official ones are painted what I believe is Gunmetal Grey. It is metallic and reflective. I'm curious... is that correct and am I just overthinking it or is there some other explanation?

Methinks your GK should be painted silver.

Has anyone tried painting them black? I know that it goes against the fluff, I just wonder what the result would be.

I'm going to try painting one of mine black tonight, since i'm painting the old metal ones easy to strip the paint off them.

Mite change to black or red since the white is a pain to get a smooth coat on

Ultramarines style colour scheme would be quite nice. It would really follow any fluff, but to me that stuff doesn't matter.

You could paint them dull grey if you really wanted to stick to the physics of their armour. However, I think you're overthinking it. If you think about it, alot of the physics of 40k just don't make sense.

I mean, plasma projected by a strong magnetic field? I tell you that is ridiculous.

I like to imagine the Emperor kills so many Orks that he ends up half buried beneath a pile of corpses, with only his head sticking out. A lone grot stumbles across him, and starts choking him.

Then Horus comes across the lone grot, somehow managing to kill the Emperor, and punts it into space.

I like the idea of a dull grey. Why not try to get a granite look on it? I think that would actually look pretty damn good

This is a quick mock up I did a while ago for my own paintscheme, it works with your idea for dark ceramics, use it if you like, and post how they look!

I like painting my grey knights grey
I prime them black, and then paint the armor grey, afterwards I wash the armor black. thats usually as far as I go on the basic color (I'm not going into any details like the runes and eyes and stuff)

realistically, if you're going to do it the way I mentioned, you should layer the armor codex grey after washing it, and then highlight with fortress grey or a mix between codex grey and white
