Hay guys!

Does anyone have any tips on painting up the different kind of patterns on Tau skimmers? I was thinking of using tape and I also read an article that uses pencil.

I’m looking to use a pattern simmer to the T'au one.

The main colour being white and the sept colour is dark angles green. I was thinking different shades of grey.

Opinions? Ideas?

Thanks

Are you painting by brush or spray? Masking works best - almost exclusively, actually - when spraying. While a bit of tape could suffice to keep drybrushing from straying off the target part, paint diluted to the consistency needed for smooth layers will tend to creep under the edges of the tape, ruining your perfect lines. For brush painting, I'd recommend sketching the shapes on lightly in pencil, then filling them in, starting from the top-center, then radiating outwards, to ensure even distribution of color in the pattern.

Thanks. I have been using brushes. Thing is, ive alread fininshed the tanks a while back, I just wanted to give my army a bit of an asthetic upgrade. they are starting to look a bit plain and messy.

As i said before, my tanks are white with green sept colours.

I can upload a pic of them if you guys want.

Pictures, always

The disruptive pattern in camouflage often works better if its a little fluttery at the edges so brushing them on is fine usually. It also saves on expensive and time consuming tools and methods

The more important thing is to make sure that the pattern is going in the right places. Don;t just put patches of colour in the middle of flat plates. The pattern is supposed to disguise edges and obviously un-natural shapes and sillhouettes. Hence always run the pattern over corners and edges and suchlike. Zebra-effect ahoy

if you want to mask, I recommend using some sort of putty, like blu-tac. I used masking with tape on me leman russ tanks and the end result didn't come out too well

Hang on, were is my camera...

Anyway. I am grateful for your help. I will upload my average looking devilfishes when I get the chance. They might have some pencil lines on them too.

When I did model planes, I used blu-tac to make the lines nice and curvy. Tape would be hard to use, since devilfish are so curvy. Plus it would be next to impossible to get the tape down into the panel lines.

Ok. I’ve gone and done some work on them without giving you any pics, so I thought that you might want to see how they're looking. I’ve done about half the camo on it so it isn’t actually finished, and I’m also changing the 'machine' parts from the grey to black, so they stand out better (as well as being the norm colour for those bits)

Thanks for any comments.

Wow those look really cool. I might have to borrow those ideas for my next tank project.

I like it.

I would probably the black parts a dark grey rather than pure black.

Im a bit worryed about putting to much grey in as the whole reason for doing the camo pattens was to make the things a bit more interesting to look at. The green sept colour has done its job well so far too, contrasting with the rest of the tank.
