What do you like? Aliens? Human? Vehicles? Lots of troops? Give us something to work with. There are so many options it is impossible to help without some feedback to what you like.

Pick an army based on the following:

1) what you like the look of (because if you play with an "ugly" army you'll end up hating it)
2) what you like the fluff of (because anti-societal emos choose Chaos )
3) what you like the play style of (ie if you feel you want to get close and personal, do not choose Tau)
4) What you have the money to effectively collect (ie, short on cash? DO NOT do Tyranids)

A good place to start looking is the store shelf or the Dakka Gallery, becuase you might just see one or two things that interest you, and thus spark a chain reaction.

Whatever it is, go with your gut feel, so that you won't regret it later. 40k armies are for very long if not for ever.

At the end of the day, just go with the look and playstyle you like and you can't go wrong!

Eg. I love outspeeding my opponent with fast vehicles so I went with Eldar, my brother likes commanding a huge hoard and outnumbering his opponent so he chose Tyranids.

Also don't get Necrons until they get updated, you'll loose most games xD

+1 to what Sam said. I'm currently on my 5th army and I've only been playing for a year! Lol Also do you want to play for fun or competitive? I love nid models and their fluff but I hated their rules and the fact that there are a lot of units that don't have models(a bit of a perfectionist and can't do conversions lol)

If you have friends that play see if they'll let you borrow their army. I also read through a few if the dexs to see what I liked before I picked my last army.

When you do find an army you like, whether you have money to blow or not, check eBay, the swap shop, and even bartertown for people selling armies. You can usually find a decent sized army for a fraction of retail. You may have to strip the paint, and do some rebuilding but you'll save a lot of money that you can then use to add into the army or even trade/sell the models you don't want.

But if you want a good decent army to start off with that has a lot of balance do one of the Marine ones or choose Chaos.

Plus, Marines give you by far the most versatility in terms of what kind of army you can have.

Go with orks! Orks are the most 'fun' army to build/play because they are wacky and break up the depressing grim dark of the 40k universe. Plus you can buy any model from any army and make it an ork vehicle with a bit of elbow grease!

Orks by themselves are expensive. although if you have the money go for it.

Look, in terms of actual expense and models, you'll end up investing quite a bit into every army, whichever you choose. Obviously Grey Knights at one extreme and Orks and 'Nids at the other. Either way, you can probably convert a couple of themed things, but indeed Orks are by far the easiest and easily subjected to the RoC.

It all depends on your situation, but another factor you should probably take into account is your meta, ie the game played at your FLGS. Go for an alternative army, don't just copy the rest of your gaming group.
