Hey folks,

This is a project I started a couple of months ago now and that has sadly taken a bit of a backseat lately, due to starting another army! Yeah, I'm the prince of unfinished projects!

Anyway, it's a grey knight army with a bit of a twist. The colorscheme is pretty basic, but the entire army (down to every individual soldier) has been magnetised so all the bits on those plastic sprues can be used. I also wrote a tutorial on how to magnetise them, but I think I'll save that for the tutorial subsection. Seeing how this is the painting thread: here's a couple of shots of the grey knights so far:

Then there is the dreadnaught with scratchbuild TL AC made from the aegis defence line kit. The armor around it is made from plasticard around a greenstuff core. This was my first attempt ever to work with plasticard, so it came out a wee bit rough, wich translates into the paintjob sadly...

Then there is the librarian, a slight conversion with some of the plastic terminator pieces. This one actually appeared in GW's "what's new today" blog, since I won a local painting competition with it in Antwerp. It wasn't the stiffest of competition though, more of a funsies thing... but nice nevertheless.

And then there is the old limited edition inquisitor Lorr model, spruced up with a new paintjob to better match the new GKs.

The obligatory psyback transports. They all have differen heraldry on them to set them apart.

And some more shots of the strike squad members, along with an army shot of what's finished so far:

Hope you like it.

Lovely!

Can I ask how you painted the silver?

The silver was airbrushed on using a basecoat of vallejo model air steel and gunmetal. The deep areas recieved an asurmen blue wash, followed by a asurmen blue+black mix in the deepest recesses. It was then edge highlighted with vallejo model air silver (done by regular brush, not airbrush).

Hey Elmir, these look amazing. I am curious how you converted up the autocannon arms on the dread. Would you mind telling your secret about which parts to use, possibly a tutorial .

Thanks in advance and again, amazing work.

Yeah, I have some WIP shots of how the arms got made. It's basically the autocannons from the aegis defence line kit. The central axis was cut out, and then the arms were trimmed a bit to sit closer together (more like the TL LC). The pins that would normally clip into the ammo drums were removed next, although that "slot" is left available to fit the drum mags. The pins just need to be removed because they'll sit in a slightly different spot there.

Then, some plasticard was cut to mimic the plates of the original DN arms. They are then pushed against the weapons using Greenstuff and superglue. I used greenstuff because you get a good contact surface that way + you can still correct some odd looking angles while the GS hasn't set yet. Kinda like this:

Once the armorplates are in place, you can start adding some extra detailing, like rivets (just roll out some GS really finely and chop it up as if it were a sausage), purity seals from the GK set, all those shields from the terminator sets, some extra plasticard plaques,... Just so it looks a little more "baroque" and fit for grey knights.

It's not a full blown tutorial, but I hope you get the idea. It's a little extra work, because I find that just bolting on the aegis defence line cannons without any extra work just looks a bit too "ghetto rigged" for grey knights.

I don't mind at all. This is off the top of my head:

The silvers are done by airbrush. I used a mixture of vallejo model air gun and vallejo model air steel. Best white metals you can get! Although GW metallics are not far behind.
Next is a wash of asurmen blue applied to the recesses. This is followed by a light black wash in the deepest recesses.

Gold is done with shining gold, shaded with brown ink and given a deeper shading with sepia ink. It's then highlighted up again with shining gold and a mix of shining gold and silver.

The whites are just white over a vallejo model color skygrey basecoat.

Reds are done with vallejo game color's gory red as a basecolor. This is then shaded by mixing a minute amount of black into the red and thinning it down to wash like consitency. Highlights are done by progressively mixing in blood red to end up with a pure red highlight. The final reds are glazed with vallejo model color's transparant red, thinned down with windex cleaner. Finally, the edges are given a pure black wash to create nice sharp blacklining where I thought it would look good.

The powerswords are blended from dark blue to iceblue, with a few pure white edge highlights. This is then glazed with blue ink to tie the blending together and given a final touch of white near the tip of the sword.

Black are just done by highlighting codex grey and then washing over the edges with black glaze. A "how to" guide of this can be found in the tutorial section here on the boards.

Hope this helps and thanks for the comments folks

I meant to post a comment on this one, but it looks like I didn't. Beautiful work. I really like the twin linked autocannons. Much better than the lazy Aegis Defense Line conversions. Very well painted stuff. You should be proud.

This is my latest work: the stormraven.

The stormraven is a pretty ugly model because of it's odd, "stumped" shape... So it's something I tried to minimize with my paintwork. Vertical lines slim people down, so following this logic, I tried to make it look sleeker then it really is:

And to follow up, I have made a few more army shots in my new light tent setup. This is where the army stands now:

Hope you like it! It feels good to be able to paint again in the new setup I have going now.

Hey hey folks,

Update time for the grey knights. Seeing how the stormbird was the most recent addition, it was time to finish the deadly cargo it delivers. So I started work on my paladin squad. Their paladin status is visible in their white helmets. If I want to swap them out to regular termies, I'll just give them the alternate helmet style in silver metallics.

I wasn't too keen on using the backpoles provided in the box. I think they look a bit silly on infantry... so I'd much rather use them to give my tanks some more goodies.

Anyway some pics:

And, of course, the magnetisation is basically all over the place, so repositioning them is always an option if you think the pose is a bit daft:

So only 2 more to go and the squad will be complete, ready to be flown in from the skies with their librarian. It's fun to see the army shaping up with each addition

Hope you like it, feedback and CC is always apreciated.
