I'm interested in getting Sternguard and Vanguard boxes. For the people that have gotten it, what weapon choices does it offer? Does the Finecast and regular versions have any differences?

Thanks in advance.

Didn't they used to be in metal? My FLGS still has those in stock, I'm also worried if I get them they'll have no customizability.......

I want lightning claws and other exotic weapons for my vanguards, but from the GW website description it says they have basic power weapons and plasma pistols..

Can anyone confirm this?

Cool, thanks. Is it possible to give a combi plas to one guy and a combi melta to another guy? And are there other accessories like purity seals and such?

Wow... didn't know they came fully (mostly) built on the sprues. 45 bucks is too much though. I'll find something on ebay.

Thanks for the pics bro

NP, i ended up just using mine as sergeants for my tac squads. Maybe when i buy a drop pod that will change or when i finally get around to molding the combi's. The price is steep but something cool about painting finecast, the paint goes on much better imo then metal. I know there is lots of negatives too thats why i open mine in the store before i leave, learned the hard way with a jumpchaplain.

The vanguards and sternguards are metal (oops, now finecast of course!) most of their bodies are one piece casts with attached heads. Usually the arms and backpacks are the only separate things. They don't come with other accessories like the plastic kits.

I've seen sternguard made from tacticals, BA DC parts, or other plastics with additional purity seals, painted veteran markings on the helmet, and usually some modified ammo hopper on the boltgun (that being the most obvious distinguishing feature).

I field my Deathwatch marines as sternguard.

I found it easier just to build my own. Crux Terminatus shoulder pads, some modded bolters, and plenty of left over power weapons from assault marine sprues.

Was much cheaper then buying the actual models as well.

This is true.I have Draigo in Finecast. Now,the heat in my case is unbearable,so every time I open it, Draigo's sword is bent.I mean bent !Nearly 90 degrees.

Good thing he is finecast!Took nearly an hour to make up the right paint, another hour to practise on a spare modal.Still looks as good as when I put it on.

My main beef was that the fact that it makes you take a power fist, that's a lot of points for something that is made to shoot.

PF is not worth it for sternguard. For the same price, you could give the 5 man squad all combi-weapons.

I haven't had a game with Sternguard that didn't have them getting into close combat relatively early on. People are usually afraid of their shooting and charge to counteract that. A power fist is a decent investment, and the Sternguard power fist model is one of my favorite GW models ever produced.

So what IS finecast exactly? Is it a kind of metal? I have never owned such a model before.

It's a resin plastic mix.
It's... had a few problems. If your models are warped in anyway however you can contact GW to replace them.

I agree the power fist model of the sterguard is one of the better looking models-i think the backpack in these pics is off the reach sgt.

It shouldn't be too much of a mission to chop off the arm...

What's the best/cheapest/easiest way of getting combi-attachments? Because I only intend on buying 1 squad, and I want them all to have around 50-50 melta/flamer, not 100% sure yet. Either way, I don't want to have to buy 5 boxes for 1 complete squad.

I bought the chapterhouse combi-kits, think I have five of them now I'd resell. It's an excellent idea, but in my opinion the finished product is just too small. These are what I'm waiting to receive now:

Well for one thing, dig thru your bits box. I have 3 sternguard combi-weapons, 2 plasma & 1 melta all made from bits. They're pretty easy to make honestly. For plasma use a plasma pistol, cut it off just past the trigger vertically & then in half lengthwise below the power coils. Cut the handguard off the bolter & glue the plasma piece in place of the handguard.

Combi-melta is easy, but not as easy. Do the bolter the same way. Take a melta & cut it apart at it's hanguard so that it fits under the barrel of the bolter. Cut away & glue the fuel tank onto the bolter where that Aquila or skull/whatever is. Should look about like this:

For the combi-flamer again, repeat the cuts on the bolter. Cut the nozzle off a flamer & cut it in half lengthwise. Cut the promethium tank & mounting hinge off. Glue these under the bolter barrel in place of the hanguard. Should look about like this:

I might have to steal the slung rifle idea, i like it. Also your homemade combis' turned out better then my first attempt.

Red_Starrise, I really really like your idea. And the thing is one can easily buy meltaguns and plasmaguns as GW bitzpacks at the FLGS, so no funny shipping to places like South Africa!

Thanks guys, glad I could be of help.

Here's one more since it's in the same vein here: aux grenade launcher

Very simple if you have landspeeder storm kit. Cut the rappelling line handle off, glue it to the hand guard. Then cut the bayonet lug off under the barrel & glue a piece of plastic rod/tube in place of the bayonet lug. Voila, should look a bit like this:

And the slung rifle is excellent for several reasons, not the least of which is interchangeability. I can give this sgt any weapon I want him to have from the codex like this, aside from a power fist. You can see I did the same for my chapter champion as well.

Yes, they are all there, more or less, the guy leading the conga line is a clear shot of the aux grenade launcher but everyone BUT Pedro have one actually.

Wow, the finecast Sternguard look good. All my metal SG suffer from extreme... umm, shrinkage. Looking a bit flat and bent (no comments please). I was surprised how flat they are compared to finecast.
