So here is what I have complied so far for my Crimson fist army. I am going to try and keep this post semi organized so I am going to post a photo or two of each in this thread. However I will also throw up links to more detailed photos but older posts. So all in all this is my attempt to showcase my entire army and keep some feedback on the whole force.

EDIT. Keep in mind some of these links are old so just comment on here to avoid necro threads

Now for the links.

You really need to look into some washes and highlights. There's no shading or highlighting going on here, and as a result everything looks very, very flat. You should also do more with the weathering; these tanks are driving through scum and muck and mud and dirt. Make them look like it!

Thanks. I just got the hang of washes, I did alot on the venerable dread(his flamer hand and engine) and some on the back of my captains cape. Highlighting I have not really tried but I will give it a shot.
Thanks for the comment.

Looks pretty good, but I agree. Give them some washes, and paint some dirt on the vehicle's wheels. Otherwise, nice models.

They remind me a lot of Ultramarines 2nd company. Perhaps in the future do a little more red and a little less blue

I do plan on going back and mucking up the treads/wheels soon. As far as the washes go I think now that I have a feel for them I might go back and give it a shot.

I see what you mean by that, Any suggestions on what I could do?

riverhawks32 wrote:They remind me a lot of Ultramarines 2nd company. Perhaps in the future do a little more red and a little less blue

I thought the ultra's had a lot more gold on them. As far as my main troop force they have almost no gold on them. The only thing I try to give gold/bronze to is more distinguished models, like the venerable/ironclad dread and the captain. In fact I even made the scouts less blue and more black/camo since they have not earned power armor and blahblah... However thanks for the input I will see if I can work on that.

Please let me know what you think.

I would use a red gloss mixed with a flat red...Or a semi gloss... but dont get me wrong your models look amazing..just not a fan of red on spacemarines..unless it is a blood angels army!

You've shown us you can put down a really great , flat coat of paint. Frankly that's ten times better than the rest of the crap in this forum

Try adding some shade and highlight on a test mini and see where you can push your skills to.

That is one of the things I try the hardest to get. I just started to try out washes and I like the results. I guess it's about time try highlighting. Thanks for help.

Agree with J.Black, you're off to a good start, but some cleaning on the models and some washes/highlight would make the army stand out.

Sweet jesus !Talk about blowing this guys confidence. Bud they look great..! how long have you been painting..? a wash may help but only tip id give you is this try talking your photos inside out of direct sunlight.. as this is flooding your pics and killing off any highlights or shadows .. but besides that bud great work.. ps dont take to heart some of the comments on here ... people on here are not too amazing painters them selfs.. keep going bud great wrk

By cleaning do you mean more filing or thinning the paint, or what?

Heh, good thing I have thick skin. I have been painting a little over a year. I have a good bit of free time so I decided to pick up a hobby and I played a little back when I was in school so I landed on 40K. I do plan on getting better at the whole washing thing, as far as the photos I will try to get some more detailed photos with different lighting.

Thanks!

Ha ha ha ye thick skin is a must on dakkadakka lol. For little over a yr bud that is a good level your at i would say a little more advance than the normal considering the time scale .. Washes are ok and in time bud you will learn to do without them totally using natural progression form dark to light colours.. I've only been painting a little longer than you but im lucky enough that my job allows me the time to practice more than most .. I look forward to seeing more work from you buddy KEEP GOING..

I mean with cleaning that you should correct any obvious painting errors, they seem somewhat apparent on the first 2 pictures (although this may be because of the way the are photographed) but for some reason they dont look as clean as your vehicles.

I was actually paying the guy a compliment.

Getting a neat, flat coat of paint is a tricky thing to do, not least because it requires a lot of patience, and i applaud the OP's efforts. I just think that they could build on this and produce much better results. Using washes and then highlights would be a good way to start.

As for knocking his confidence..... The best thing this forum can do is to provide constructive criticism for the posters; sadly 90% of the threads on here simply have 'Amazing work Bro!' 'ZOMG Good job etc..... Even when the model on display is utter crap. How are people supposed to improve their painting if they keep being told that their work is great all the time?

You are correct in saying that some people here are not great painters, but you could always just have a look in their galleries to see if you should take their criticism seriously

Fist off i was not talking about you or your work when i made my statement.. . i was on about another member from what i have read he does not like any ones work but means you've taken it upon yourself to bring your work to my attention then i'd say this guy is light years ahead of you as he's been painting for a year and i see by your profile you have been into the hobby since 1988 even if you didn't paint minis for the first 17yrs i would expect the remaining years to this date you would have achieved a higher level of painting standard.. example your blue Rhino not alot of highlights or shadows on that.. could do with some washes ! Is that constructive criticism..? I'm giving the guy positive encouragement. He knows he's not the worlds greatest painter and no one is more aware of their weak areas than the painter him/herself .. improvement will come with time and experience .. ive only been painting 2 years and i know i have many many many years before i produce quality wrk but it's always nice to have a comment like "wow awesome as it make you want to go forward not think arrrr whats the point then if they are all saying its may as well give up ..! rant over..!

I didn't assume you were. I was just pointing out that you were tarring all the comments on the thread with the same brush.

I dabbled with painting for a bit when i first started the hobby but, being only 8 years old at the time, i didn't have the patience to stick at it for long enough. I stopped playing about 3 years later and got going again a couple of years ago; now i have to find time for painting between working for a living and playing Guild Wars . I know my painting standard is not the highest (same goes for my photography skills) but i am slowly improving.

example your blue Rhino not alot of highlights or shadows on that.. could do with some washes ! Is that constructive criticism..?

Not really..... The blue rhino (Immolator) was posted in the P&M section and, as it says in the gallery's title, is a WiP. This means it is unfinished and i believe i even pointed that out in the thread it was posted in. Yes, the blue does need washing and highlighting as it is not finished yet

I'm giving the guy positive encouragement. This is the point i'm trying to make: No-one in the entire thread is telling him his painting is bad! All posters have either been complimentary/helpful or both. The only aberrant posts are the ones you have put in; slating the painting skills and attitude of other posters :S

Anyway..... if you want to continue this discussion i suggest you take it to a PM. I don't want to fill the OP's thread with opinion that is not based on his work
