Hey guys I have an ambitious plan to make the 2nd Company as shown in the Space Marine codex, however I want all the armor such as heresy era legs and I think Iron Armour helms for some of them to match the squada, I was wondering if you knew what the best way about doing this was and where to get the bits I need not supplied with the gw range of models.

I know they have them on there, just wondered if there was a cheaper alternative? And would having the exact breastplates matter hugely?

Up to you, you'd only need a few different armour marks to get a similar feel to them. You could also flesh out your old armour types by converting some of the chaos marines and khorne beserkers.

Was thinking of using green stuff on some of them, and do you have any pics of any of the chaos marines and beserker plates I could possibly use?

Three of the bezerker heads would make good heresy era helmets once the flat horns were removed and a couple of the torsos are also useful once the khorne sign has been removed from the belt buckle (one torso is even covered in studs with a chain across the chest).
The backpacks can be used as are or you can chop the arms off and glue the vents directly to the pack like normal marines have (easier to do than it sounds). There used to be a mkV helmet with studs on it in the chaos marine squad box but I'm not sure if it's still there in the new boxed set.

I've made a list of all the items I need for it now and have started buying bits from various places like on ebay and will post pics of how it all comes together. Thanks for the info on the chaos bezerkers, I will check out what bits they have individually and see what I could use.

The rarefied atmosphere

There are also plastic studded shoulderpads (command squad box I think) which you could get from bitz sites. There is also the armour of the ages metal box set of four or five old armour types from thunderer armour to maximus. Depending on how much you want to spend and what look you want you'll want the weapons like rocket launchers and bolters from forgeworld.

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.

Saw the armor through the ages but they are all metal models and I can get the bitz from various different places anyway. Am going to be doing 1 squad at a time starting with the shield bearers.

That really depends on what you're trying to achieve.

If you're trying to match what is in the Space Marine codex, then it's down to just how picky you want to be.

If you're just looking at building the entire 2nd company, what's in the codex is just a snapshot of the company as it appeared at one particular point in time. Over 10000 years, the makeup of the company would have changed from time to time.

I decided I'm going to do it exactly as it is, just needs some greenstuff here and there and it should be fine. Thanks for all the feedback guys, will keep you posted.

I am actually working on a similar project but for the Imperial Fist 5th company, I am actually using the 2nd Company spread sheet as a template of variety, though I am leaning a little more "pre-heresey" One can only imagine the armor stores the Imperial Fists must have on board Phalanx.... I have collected a ton of Forgeworld SM armor bits off of Ebay, you just need a little patience and you can find some great deals. You can actually make the "heresy" era studded armor, the ones with the beaks, pretty easy;

It is not the best image, but the guy on the right has scratch-built heresy studded legs and a shoulder. I use 1mm loose ball bearings and you can make all the stuff you need! you can pick them up at 4bx.com, 1000 for 5 bucks.

Eye of Terra.

I did this with my Ultramarines.

I purchased several of the different armor marks made by FW, dropped all the pieces in a bowl and mixed 'em up with a lot of my mk seven sets. The end result was a pretty good mix that give a decent visual representation of what they might look like after such a long time.

I painted the older mk pieces more elaborately (yet worn) than the mk seven stuff on the same model to give it that 'heirloom' feel.

Turned out ok.

FW was the only decent substitute out there, but you don't need to buy a ton of them to make your 2nd company look cool. Imho, you don't want to over-do that look anyway.

Have bought a few different kits and am in the process of assembling those together, working on the left hand squads first before going on to the other side, will post some more pics of the next 2 squads w.i.p when I get back from work tonight.

Nice stuff so far.

Knock yourself out. They are by far the best bitz site I have used, prices a bit steep, but you get metal and finecast bitz also.

Hey guys sorry for the long delay been working on finishing off some Tau and other Space Marine bits I had lying around. Have now undercoated 4 squads and have recently got new new finecast sicarius so he will be cleaned up and done soon. The main problem I'm having at the moment though is I'm not sure what type of base to go for. I have got some sand, grass and the slate? from the basing kit from GW and was wondering what you guys think might work well for them and any pics would also help.

Thanks

*More pics coming soon

Also still need advice on how best to base them

Takes a little practise to get right... and it's best to stick the models to the bases after painting/finishing.

Non-shrink Polyfilla works wonders if you're using bits like the ones in the basing kits. You can make a nice even (ie, level) surface with the 'bits' worked into it.

While it's still malleable, if you gently press the model's feet into it you'll know where the Marine is going to be standing, so you can then model the rest of the base to taste. If you press the feet in a little further you can create soft ground effects such as mud or snow, and/or add additional 'footprints'.

For other details, it depends what kind of theme you want for your bases

Thanks for the feedback, given me a lot to think about, might play around with a few spare bases and try a few different things.
