I've just skimmed through the thread on the worst Marine Chapter and read about "Rainbow Warriors". Immediatly I thought of Greenpeace, who's boat was called Rainbow Warrior...Are there any other apparent puns out there? Apart from Ultramarines being named after the shade of blue of their armour that is....

Rainbow warriors are made after a Hawaiian football team, and the Ultramarines are not exactly ultramarine colored.

The "Easter Eggs" in 40k aren't particularly well hidden. Marbo is Rambo. That's about the level of sophistication you're dealing with here.

I'm fairly sure it was Greenpeace. The first artwork of them was made around the same time. And it would be far more likely that a bunch of British lads would reference something like that, an not some American football team.

The Ultramarines' name has two different meanings: "ultra marines" ("da best!") and a reference to their colour.

The Dark Angels entire chapter is both a poke at Catholocism and homosexuality. It's probably the most subtle of GW's jabs, even if most SM players have been in on the joke for years.

Lion El'Johnson = DA Primarch
Lionel Johnson = Homosexual poet.

Dark Angels = Chapter of Space Marines
The Dark Angel = poem Lionel Johnson wrote about his experiences being homosexual.

Luthor, the arch-traitor = Guy in the DA who split the Legion into civil war
Matin Luther = guy who caused the Catholic/Protestant division by publicly telling people the papacy was full of crap.

Abaddon is the angel destined to destroy the world and (possibly related to the Cabal's claim) kill the Devil.

Though it's probably not accurate, Fulgrim's a silver-haired swordsman who's symbol is a single wing and transforms into a terrifying monster. I wonder if the people who designed him liked Final Fantasy?
