Hey all, I've been building my Vostroyan army quite happily, but there was something missing..
Bases!

Now.. i think most people would think, just throw a bit of flock on there with some sand or rocks, this is all nice but i think it looks a tad unoriginal, and flock can also cost.
cost money i would prefer to go into models themselves. or paints

This is an example of a base i just did in under 5min, most of that time watching youtube.

all i did was use a pair of sharp scissors to carve lines in the base to represent large bricks or tiles, This was a spare base so it was only a test but i am surprised at the result, i believe if i put more effort into the lines, originality of the tiles etc, maybe even making one look like only half a tile, and painting the floor different, or use some precious flock.

This is just an idea, i would urge anyone with cheap, or very cheap (as in my case) bases that look alright to post them, and also any helpful criticisms would be more than welcome.

P.S, this whole job was done with scissors, tallarn flesh and devlan mud, no primer or anything else of any kind.

The base may be cheap, but unfortunately it looks the part. The carving is well done and I applaud the idea, but you should add some details to the base, as it is very bland ATM. Maybe a second wash, some drybrushing or even some weathering would greatly benefit the base.

I second; it looks like something whipped out in under five minutes while watching Youtube.

Personally, I prefer brick/stone bases that are elevated from the level of the stock base. You get a much more three-dimensional look (not to mention you can play around with jagged/broken bricks to create a grittier warzone look) and shows that you put more effort in than quickly carving some lines in plastic.

The blocks are too big and uneven imho
I understand that they might be different in a 40K universe, but if you have big paving blocks they have to be more believable.

It would be hard to lay them if they are different shapes and sizes, amd with the extra scorings show the hand of the builder which distracts from the illusion.

However the basic idea is cool and with some extra detailing as mentioned I think you are on to something.

An alternative approach is to cut individual rectangles from plastic card. This way you can get regular sizes and if you chamfer the edges get a more realistic effect. It takes a bit longer but is worth the effort imho

Its a nice idea and does have potential but i agree with the others that it needs more.

Personally if i was doing bases like this on a budget id use thin card from cereal packets for the stones then a few little patches of fine sand in the grooves and some cut up sprue and small rocks from the garden scattered around.

With your army choice id want some patches of snow on there too. Im not sure of the best low budget way to do that tho.

I would put down an even layer of green stuff and then sculpt the stones into that. They look too flat as it is, but an excellent paintjob might be able to fix that.

Not a bad idea at all though, I might do that in the future and make casts of them.

Thanks for all the posts guys, just want to relay if i didn't express it well in the op, this is just a random thing i did while i was bored, i personally intend to use a pricy list to create all of my bases as i believe a model worth painting is worth the money.

Anyone with any ideas on cheap bases (nearly free) for kids or the money starved would be greatly appreciated

P.S i think ill work on this base a bit, add more details and throw up a few pics of progress etc, see if i can create a pretty much free, and good looking base.

I would love to see this, not being able to put as much into every model as I'd like. Please share if you come up with some good stuff!
