so i was looking at my half finished Vostroyan army and thought to myself, might as well share this on dakka, because who doesnt like a nice well painted vostroyan army.

a bit of background information.
i first became interested in vostroyans when at my local hobby store, i witnessed his men fighting of a traitorus guard army (using the old WH codex) and was ammazed how they looked painted...and 2 days later my first two squads where on there way.

but first i started small using basic converting, adding green stuff fur shoulder peices, and a few hea sqaps and a heavy flamer i ahd my work cut out for me

This soon turned into this


And it turned out well, and after looking for a good colour scheme i went with using khemri brown for the coats mechrite red for arms,sleves and boots and a generous washing of devlan mud, while painting the fur codex grey, after all the green was coated i washed with a balck wash, when it was dry a little skull white drybrushing, while insig and raised features and such where painted in a nice layer of shinning gold and so to were washed with devlan mud

My Commander Sebastien Gregorov, after shaving and filing removed all that horrible ultramrines insig, and gave him a great beard and a very nice paint job





soon i will post my other men including the first finished squad with their chimera transport as well as the rest of the command squad and their transport

the GS fur looks a tad bumpy on some shoulders but seeing your telion conversion i see that oyu have greatly improved your skills with GS... also you showed me a good way to use the many scouts in my collection that i have toyed to use as stormtroopers in my mind...the scheme is very good looking and the fur on the commander is very cool...the beard is of matching quality!!!

thanks i started converting the scouts once i bought the land speeder storm and had nothing to do with them , as with the greenstuff after so much time working on it i started to work out the kinks in my style.

Next up is my first heavy weapons squad with mortars



also with a bit of snow, i didnt go for the whole fully snow based as on other boards they would look out of place

which is actually 2 models in one with a pinned turret flamer and multilaser, as well as magnatised drum barrrels on the back of the hull for use as a hellhound

holy gak... now you are really showing your true colors!!! that chimera/ hellhound vehicle is a looker and a half...i really like the flames on the front!!! could you make a more revealing shot of the front? the vostroyans looking simply delicious mate! as is the commissar...the only nitpick i have to point out is the red rim to the vostroyan bases...the scheme of said bases with the hint of snow i really like but the red below puts me off...it is to much yelling that red...the bases done in classic black look much better...

the mortar crews on the first pic are just wargames factory headswaps and cadian bodies and arms? with GS shoulder fur? cool idea...

Love the colour scheme, works really well. Have to echo Viktor on the red rim to the bases, it is a bit off putting. Chimera looks really cool and the Commissar is sweet.

I agree with Vik, your GS-fu is improving!

The Chimera/Hellhound conversion is pretty interesting. Way to stick it to GW From a fluff perspective, those tanks make pretty appealing targets though. Maybe do half tanks with some plasticard armor? That way they are a little less conspicuous and more well protected (and you get to keep one of the barrels for some other project )

Don't be afraid to take the time to invest in the details on your models: They look great when you do them (Your faces and mustaches!) but are missed when you don't (your firstborn sarge has all red purity seals and grenades, etc.)

Aye they are the first mostly completed.....vostroyans...works been at my back all day...thanks to christmas we all have to pull extra shifts to pick up hours :S the smaller detail i havent had time to complete but i will get to that, @ Viktor thanks for noticing the bases when they where done i was a bit skeptical about changing them to black.....but more than my own opinion helps when doing this so Thanks for the input ....*now to toil away into the night painting detail and black bases.
and here are the front shots of the chimera, the flames where weathered a bit ...from their use and painting.





the glossy red is a paint that i dont know if it is still in production but a clear red X-27 from tamiya, and you apply it let it dry and gives the same effect of blood on models ,



i paint on into the night, and once i get the time to take and put up my leman russ's photos i shall even more happier !!! oh and my sentinel as well

so as the bone white paint drys i post the pictures of my first leman russ, Thors hammer...how he got that name.... is a short funny story, i was playing agaisnt a friend who plays CSM, and after scoring hit after hit with my normal russ (being a great fan of vikings and all that stuff) he said out loud "that thing is as strong as Thors hammer " and well it stuck.

the main problem was being second hand the previous owner had done his own "battle damage" around the driver port and front sponson......really badly, so only thing to do at the time as a hobbist with not to many options i greenstuffed it back to a reasonable shape...i call it repair work for all the work it had done



but the tank commander has a bit of painting left to do on him...as well as deciding to add fur or not :S

and as it was firstly intended (dont know if firstly is actually a word :S) to be a city fighting tank, he had put wire and the back of the turret to keep infantry off it ... so ii keep the "anti infantry barbed wire" around the turret gave it a feel for city fighting when it had its chance

finally after much nocturnal painting i have finished the sargent ......to my tired eye (if you spot something i missed let me know)




and ths quad ...and thanks to viktor your right they look better with black base's



now ...........to find a can of spray to undercoat the next squad....but to my utmost sadness i noticed that the sarge in the other squad is missing his pointing finger...so he will have a "clenched fist"

i have a question for anyone reading,would you consider it legal (in a games sense), if i was to place a meltagun (conversion) on a sling on the side of a vostroyan model, would you count that as WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) rule as long as the points are paid for and that the oppenent is notified about it, or just as ornamental and unusable in game ?

Huge improvement! The gold on his backpack unit looks really great! I think you should use whatever receipe that is on all of your gold stuff! Now that we're talking receipies, I'd like to know how you did that

I have learned from experience that painting late into the night is dangerous: you've got a little bit of overpainting on his boots (which I have also done in nocturnal paint sessions )

I think adding a few washes to add depth would go a long way (like on the chainmail and grenades), but he looks pretty good already.

You could always do a hand swap. Give him something cool out there like a chainsword or a grenade or something. The one downside about the Vostroyans is the limited model number, so doing some customization is a must

well with my shinning gold ...it is very thin ...really really thin so after about two layers, after it had dried a thin layer of devlan mud, when that was dry, i then gave it a genours layer of it and let it dry and hey presto.

what ive done with the hand was give it a plasma pistol hopefully it might even work out just gotta green stuff the gap up.

and good news the first five of ten Karskin have arrived ive been busy painting them all after noon, i will post pictures sooon

ok the lasgpistol holding hand of the sarge is a bit to goldish^^ so a touchjup might be needed there too... other than that...he looks stunning^^ (oh just noticed some blotchy action on the grenade...ans surrounding area...)

as for the wysiwyg shtick...i think a sling is as good as good as you get... if the gun is ON the model it counts! heck if it is on the model and you didn´t pay for it, i guess then your into deep trouble^^

don´t know your background for your vostroyans... but a friend of mine...shasolenzabi has a tank named "Perun"... the russion mythic version of thor...might be a think for your interrest too...
the wire on the tank is a cool idea and the freehand on the dozerblade is very cool! that tamiya red on the chimera is a bit of something i am troubled with...but if the bloodcolor is a fluffy choice for you i think it is a good idea...

and thanks for apreciating our thoughts about the bases... now the mini shines and not the base^^ (but the base ´s design is a cool loking one^^

today after a quick visit to my games store i bought the new LORD COMMISSSAR...cause i really like commissars , but with not spray paint a nice layer of thin chaos black instead.. best part about him is that he comes with a fur cape thingy already done im excited

anytips on doing facial scar's.....or do i just paint as normal and doing a light red highlight ofthe raised scar?

hmmm... congratz to your bargain... but paintwise i can´t help you there... maybe there is a tutorial here for painting scars...? ther board has an own tutorial section...might be good to pay it a visit...

so with some time to wait while my commissar to dry i finished basing/terraing my other hvy bolter team, looking for some way to differentiat the squads i made the decision to doing it ina city/rubble snow bases as the other squad had sand and snow.

i like the conversion work you did on the stormtrooper...makes much more sense that pose this way...almost like he is snipeing now...like DMR...
the HW base looks cool...did it hurt to hack through the terrain bit?^^

Yeah it did... i was like ...Goodbye terrain ... >.< but its worth it he looks quite fancy !!!

hmmm... some minor idea about the stormtroopers... those cables... do they need to be all red? i would suggest either a dark brown or go the full step and make them flashy...green or blue... something to show them a bit off...

and yep... it looks fancy now all choped up^^

I think that is a good suggestion. The 9th Mechanized could use some spot color. Same thing with the lenses of your Kasrkin, I think they would look better in a different color...

okay , i was thinking about doing the cables in a sort of oragny colour with a yellow higlight thingy , i also tried my hand at OSL (the lighting thingy) on my sentiels plasma cannon

this was before i extended the blue abit and did some work to try doing the same kinda thing on the head lamps above, as its my prized sentinel proud kill count of 5 storm shield termies and about a squad of marines

and the other two stormtropers (only the grenadier is not worth taking a photo of :S), i did a same type of conversion on this one as the other one but tried to slighty mimic the vostroyan sniper whos in the same sort of pose (but i think hes stepping up on a pipe...mines a bit of paddle pop stick thingy)



avast i shall return, for work needs me for a full three night shift, for the end of my week, but hopefully in the day if i can get up early enough, i shall have the command chimera photographed and up tomorrow, i finished the gold highlights of all the rivits .... yah Highlighting

upon testing the cabling i have descided that a dark angels green MUCH betterly (dont think tis a word ...again.... ) as well with a light green almost white thin highlight pictures tomorrow!!

now that is some wicked looking OSL lightnings on that sentinel...cool...!

and i think you captured the idea of the sniper on that stormy quite well!

though i am a bit confused... it looks like you are testing a camo on those stormies or is it just sanded off primer?

I love a model with a record! One of my Space Wolf Sergeants held his own, alone, against an entire tac squad of marines for three turns in close combat. He's the baddest dude in the whole great company!

Ambitious project with the osl, my friend! I admire your cojones! You have a good start there, but do you mix your paints at all? The glow is looking a bit candy corn atm.

and the command chimera as Promised, the V is made of Green stuff, took a while to do as well, as the tread track cover's are made of plasticard (thin) cause i actually didnt get any track covers with the new chimera (or leman russ kits) with dont even have some of the old comodities such as tow cables and storage bags :(







a few weeks ago a friend who creates terrain (the terrain guy) with greast skill had a left over (half of a left over) chimera, and was going to get rid of it, but i jumped to the resuce and salvaged it from the mechanicus's forge recyclers (the rubbish bin...) and after some work with plasticard thick stuff) i made a slottable hydra flak using the aegis defence auto quad cannons , and at the moment im working on making a chimera slot in








the only thing i dont like about the hydra flak is the gaps around the turret mount :( any ideas guys ????

Looking good Adro!

For the OSL I would recommend the following method:
1. Paint the plasma area with Necron Abyss. Water it down and paint it around the area you want to be lighted, but paint a little further than you think necessary.
2. Paint the plasma area with Mordian Blue. Water down and paint inside where you did Necron Abyss.
3. Keep following this pattern with Enchanted Blue, Ice Blue and Fenris Grey, getting further in as you add another layer.
4. Mix Fenris Grey and Skull White and paint the edges around the plasma area.
5. Finally Use TINY spot highlights of Skull White on the extreme edges.

that gap was put me off right from the start too...which is sad because the built without looks simply cool already...
that chimera looks very good, good work with the plasticcard there and the scheme i really like...not too much but just enough to make it sombre looking!

the GS "V" looks like i would have done it...i need to do that for my victorian amry too...there is really no way around that now^^

as for your camo... i really would paint all over it to not loose your style due to the camo... would confuse the army look i guess...maybe there would even be a camo for your scheme but i think that would rather involve black stripes than some urban camo...after all vostroyans are rather showy and posh looking troops...

back to the anti aricraft turret....you want it to be removed? or will you glue it in place? if the latter then i would suggest getting rid of the lower section of the turret and use it on a different item... i then would built with plasticcard the casing for the tank to place the turret simply on top...that would be the best choice for me... and i think you are capable for achieving that with just a bit of effort as i think you are a good modeler...!

@vik thanks mate !!!! !!!! i broke three scapels trying to cut the plasticard for the body of the chimera troop compartment but i got it done eventually



but i need the Peoples advice .... should i do a sandbag heavy weapons team on top (half bodies) on a rotating base (probably mounted on witha simple pin, or get the first half of the chimera body and put that on top green stuff quite a bit and add a turret??? im kinda holding towars the sandbag hvy bolter team

On a quick note i have decided to go with the hvy bolter nest and work is going pounderously but it is bearing fruit ripe to be harvested , i shall have pics when im more awake tomorrow

mate you do know the trick with plasticcard is to just score and bend and snap...right? so if you broke three blades am i guessing right that you tried to cut all the way through? be carful with those pinkies of yours... or you look soon like:



though i really like waht you have shown with your plasticcardwork here! i think a HW team might be nice and unique way< to put some dakka on the chimera...if i was you i would have both men assume a low profile though.... lest it would look funny if one of them would be sitting or kneeling...

and i will follow the pinning of the door with great interrest...i might actually learn how to do that myself!
