AT-40K, First Contact: KARMANS

Along the far reaches of the Perdus Rift, a violent Warp Storm starts to dissipate. Through the incandescent glow of a celestial nebula, an undiscovered planetary system comes into view…

Long-range sensors of the Tau Air Caste fleet on picket duty indicate that an alien race with space faring technology is in this new system. With word of this new find, a Water Caste expeditionary fleet is sent to investigate these new aliens. With the ability to travel in space, these new aliens may benefit The Greater Good.
The scientists reported back: A space faring civilization with very high technology, comparable to our own. The dominant species consist of a very large mammalian creature of high intellect.

“They wanted to negotiate” The Flotilla Commander said, as he looked up from the holographic projection of the planet. Around him, the Cadre Commanders were gathered, listening intently. The Commander began, “The negotiators and our Ethereal had decided to bring them into the Tau’va. A meeting was set on the planet in one of their urban areas.”
“Something went wrong” one of the Cadre Commanders spoke up. The Flotilla Commander nodded. “Approximately one Rotaa has passed since these aliens took our Ethereal and negotiators hostage. The protection detail assigned to them was able to escape and tried to get to the extraction zone. Two decs ago all contact stopped with the protection team. Most of the contingent will be used to free the Ethereal in the city. But first, we need t get to that protection team. They have the scientists’ data on these aliens. Technology, biology, force organization, linguistics. We need to get that data before we start the operation.” He looked at the Cadre Commander that spoke up, “Your Cadre will retrieve any survivors and the data.”
“We don’t know anything about this race?” The Cadre Commander asked in bewilderment.
“Do not underestimate these beings.” They are very clever to get us into this position. We do know one thing, they call themselves Karmans.

Game Start
Tau set up first, Karmans second. Karmans don’t seize initiative.

Turn 1

Pink Team in Devilfish Transport advances towards enemy left flank. Gold Team, in Devilfish , with Crisis Suit support, advance to intercept a unit of charging Wendigos. The suits wound a K-Shooter. But take damage from incoming fire from the Wendigos. The Broadsides unload on a Thunder Trike and a huge grav-tank, the Trike is stunned, and the large grav tank saves.
Blue Team fires on a unit of Kaptars, wounding one.

Pink Team’s Devilfish gets hit with a tremendous bolt of energy and crashes. Shas’ui Luka commands her team to bail out. “Command, transport down! Heavy energy weapons, possibly EMP!”
An advancing unit of Anakongas wound a Broadside.
“Blue Team, under heavy bombardment! We make one grav-tank and something that looks like our Broadsides!” Blue Team has 8 down, but holds.

Turn 2

The HQ calls in reinforcements and a Crisis Team deepstrike behind the Karman Wendigo lines.
The Broadsides blow up the huge grav-tank later identified as the King Mammoth.

Pink Team moves into cover. The HQ advances to support and downs some troops next to the remains of the King Mammoth.
Gold Team intercepts the advancing Wendigos in rapid fire range along with the 2 suit units in a pincer attack, inflicting casualties, but the unit holds.
A Karman Thunder Trike and the Wendigos return fire on the Crisis Team behind them. The team is destroyed.

K-Shooters begin to bombard Gold Team and their Devilfish with heavy weapons, 4 survive and hold along with the Devilfish.
The heavy weapons of the Karmans start to really take their toll on the Tau Sky Rays, both tanks have their primary weapons destroyed.

Turn 3

The Broadsides fire on another Thunder Trike, destroying it.
The HQ, Pink Team, and a Sky Ray fire on an advancing Anakonga unit but only down one.
Blue Team regroups to it’s Devilfish.
Gold Team and armor support continue to trade shots with the Wendigos, both sides losing troops.
In a fit of rage, the Karman heavy weapons troops bombard Pink Team to almost nothing.

Turn 4

The Broadsides now begin to shoot their rail guns into the Anakonga/Kaptar troops, half go down, but the unit holds.
Gold Team routs the Wendigos, while the supporting Crisis Suit and Sky Ray take down a K-Shooter and wound another.
Blue Team screams up to support Gold.
The remaining Karman grav-tank and heavy weapons teams try to hit Gold, but miss.
Anakongas in front of Pink Team open fire. Luka is gone.

Turn 5

A Sky Ray and the HQ pin the Anakonga unit that took out Pink Team
Gold Team and the Sky Ray advance to close with Karman heavy units. A Crisis Suit wounds a K-Shooter, but not before it stuns a Sky Ray.
The Broadsides fire into the Kaptar line trying to pin them down.
Anakonga troops wound another Broadside.
Blue Team moves out from cover of the Sky Ray and moves into the objective. The Kaptars break cover trying to charge the objective, but can’t make it close enough. (My opponent flubbed the run roll, and could only advance 3”)

The game ends in a Tau victory! Barely.

I hope you enjoy this Battle Report!
Thanks goes out to Pat for battling his Karmans, Morehammer for letting us use his place, and Darrin for the AT43 conversion!

I loved watching a game where Tau could advance all game.

Really nice paintjobs, not a fan of anime, but I can see you put in some hard work.

"AM are bunch of half human-half robot monkeys who keep tech working by punching it with a wrench And their tech is so sophisticated that you could never get it wrapped it out" thing a LITTLE to seriously. It also goes "Tau tech is so awesome I wish I was Tau and not some stupid Human" thing.

Nice battle report, it seems youve improved since your previous battles, and the list looks much better. You might want to consider using pathifinders for markerlights instead of having your FW provide them, and swapping out a sky ray for a hammerhead. Oh and position relay is kind of a waste. But besides that the army looks much stronger than before, although its hard to judge since it was against a fan made army. Either way, great work!

I will...never be a memory

The Karmans are great models, glad to see them getting repurposed into 40k.

I have similar ideas for some of the redblok suits/walkers and/or perhaps a Therian-'Cron army conversion.

Table looked good as well.

Nice report.

Awesome report. Looking forward to seeing more

Nice work on your tau btw, love the big heads haha, and the paintjob on the gundum battlesuits is nice.

An idea for your list, try a squad or 2 or pathfinders cause your sky rays will benefit form them aswell.

Thanks for the comments guys! yes, pathfinders would have been nice especially with that many seeker missiles brought to the table. currently, I don't have that unit for the army yet, but, I'm working on more Stealth suits, I think that might be a little better against this army for the upcoming showdown, they might survive the shooting a little longer and I can still attach markerlight drones. the 2nd Sky Ray was used to just get some games on it before it's finished and ready to go.. I didn't have the rail gun ready for this game, so I just used it as a sky ray instead.
These Karmans are super fun to try to play against, very shooty. and the ZZ Cannons totally irritate me, think Lascannon with a template, that's what was taking out most of the troops on my side as well as inflicting the damage to all armor units. and the drum-guns are pretty bad too, almost equaling pulse rifles. very tough army.

I also told my opponent not to tell me anything about his Karmans until the game. that way I'm learing in game. just like a first contact engagement. that was exciting!

HIDING IN METAL BAWKSES!

Let me say right now:
I love your models! I remember a while ago seeing them in..I think it was your Plog? I don't know, but those models and army style is awesome

And a good game, though the models were the most enjoyable part.
