I am debating on what to flock/terrain my new realm of battle board my mother in law is giving me for xmas.

I am building up a necron army right now on ice world bases,
I have a dark angel army on grass,
a Dwarf army on grass,
A high elf army on grass,
and an orc and goblin army on grass.

Should I use the base set that you can get to go with it for flocking/painting/basing most of it? Should I do a different type of landscape like ice world/frozen north? Just looking for ideas and suggestions.

Why not do a mixture? Do 2 as grass, 2 as ice and 2 with a transition

Just be careful at the edges to make sure you can use them any way around.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Sounds like a grass board is the way to go.
Do NOT use the GW kit. It's expensive, and frankly a bit gak.

Static grass you can get from raliway model stores or similar in large bags / tubs.

Paint, you'll want to spray prime (do wash the board first!), then just use emulsion house paint. I like Dulux, dunno what you guys over the pond have. Get a few shades of brown.

Don't be tempted to sand the whole board; it may look better, but it will come off the edges every time you use it. Better to just leave it painted, with the grass scattered about (as you would on a base).

Similarly DIY PVA glue is fine for sanding / flocking.

Edit: Due to the way the RoB is designed, you won't be able to use it properly if you do transitions. You need multiple sets for that (and at that point why aren't you building your own board anyway?).

I would think it would need to be able to be oriented in different ways for changing up landscape some. I do like the idea of a hybrid though. Could do a mix of green and add snow here and there as just flock snow to make it look like its winter coming....

Hmm I hadn't heard that the gw kit was gak but I might mention it to my mother in law. I was going to try to find some paint or maybe ill get some army painter primer for brown to make it so i dont have to base coat the board brown. I think i have vermin brown color still might have to test it to see if it would make a good base coat.

Also you mentioned PVA glue for glueing flock. I have not had a lot of luck with flock before I keep trying to use elmers glue and that doesnt seem to make it want to stick very well. Any recommended brands or just whatever I find at home depot?

One: Awesome mother-in-law. Good grief. Two: The RoB board I made a while back used about a 50/50 mix of Elmer's and water, worked perfectly fine for me, just need to make sure you allow it to dry completely before screwing with it (I have a problem doing that sometimes!). The flocking material that came with the board fit my purposes well enough and I have a load of it left over. I'm not exactly an expert in flocking so I'm sure there is much better quality out there, for a non-display and useable board though I was happy with it. I don't remember what type of paint I used to basecoat the board, I do remember I just picked up a pint of a brown shade from Lowe's though. I may have some WIP pics from when I made mine if you're interested.

Turns out my WIP pics were much easier to find than I thought! Bad news, apparently time and age has done horrible things to my memory (that and probably the several terrain projects since this one) 'cause looking through these pics I remember better now what I did. I didn't exactly buy a pint of brown from Lowe's for this, I did THAT for my own trench board. The brown and brown highlights used here are the brown and ochre paints that came with the GW kit. So a quick run-down of this process: wash boards and dry, spray paint rock areas black, heavy dry-brush rock areas with successively lighter shades and lighter dry-brushing (I just used three shades of grey to get the granite look so in all this was only three drybrushings), paint on the brown, dry brush the ochre, paint on the elmer's/water mix and apply heavy (i.e. giant balls of flock you see) flocking, let dry, knock flocking onto newspaper to collect, paint on elmer's/water mix again and apply lighter flocking color, let dry, impress friends.

I really like what you have done so far!!! The last pic you have up really shows the different types of terrain that you would naturally find on a battle field. Me and a friend are currently working on our own home made gaming board. We toyed with the idea of buying the GW terrain board but then decided thats half the fun. So we got hold of alot polystyrene and glued them to our boards and then did a mix of normal household white emulsion mixed with some grit and sand. Coated both boards with the mixture, let it dry and and then painted the lot black. Once this was dry we dry brushed it with with a watered version of a emulsion we had mixed at a paint store. For this we choose, shadow grey. After the first dry copated we lightened it a tone and did another shade. This is pretty much what we got so far but its def taking shape. What was good about using the emulsion with sand mix is that it has cracked where it dryed leavin a wonderful rugged rough terrain texture which looks like a hammered battle ground.

Glad to see other are working on similar projects, also good to see how other people have tackled various obsticles aswell. Got some pics up but havent really generated any interest from peoples unfortunatley.

Na haven't gotten it in yet, it is an xmas present after all. I only got to open my wife's xmas present to me early (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/410840.page). Granted going to buy some stuff myself to get to the full 2500 points but working diligently and hope to have a 2500 point army by xmas (won't be the most competitive but it will have a little bit of everything to start playing games with to see what I like).
