Subject: Is Forge World using Finecast? (Probably not.)

Posted by UberBeast over at Warseer:
I haven't seen any posts about this yet so I thought I'd toss one up.
In a recent order from Forgeworld I received a krieg lascannon team that was resculpted and cast in finecast resin. The order had been for a Heavy Bolter, but the actual model in the bag ended up being this lascannon despite the paper instructions saying it was a HB.

Is he actually CERTAIN it's Finecast and not just resin using a new mold?
This sounds like the kind of thing that, y'know...Forge World would mention.

They can't replace all construction with Finecast. Things like Titans are too heavy even for their current resin.

This looks like it would actually succeed. I mean, if Games Workshop starts selling FW Finecast, you don't have to wait a month.

Well no, the reason I say "is he certain" is because I just got Lietpold the Black, and the sprues were very much like that.
He is not Finecast though. He was simple, plain old resin as normal.

Why? They are just switching one form of resin for another.
If they do this I hope FW products don't inherit the airbubbly goodness that is finecast. Really the casting on FW stuff, particularly the newer stuff seems of a good standard to me. I was very happy with the last few things I've had. The switch over to the cheaper finecast... not a fan.

I see he got the wrong item as well. Does making things out of Finecast mean that you also have to get Finecast’s level of QA?

I fully agree with Kan on this one.
I'm sure there would have been some kind of statement.
Also, he is a resin whore and he has not mentioned anything new about the quality/change of FW resin recently.
In saying that, what do I know?

They are on proper sprues though like the finecast. Unless I'm forgetting, all my FW figures have come attached to large tabs through which the resin is poured into the mould. They don't come on a sprue which suggests injection casting.

And parts of my Lietpold the Black(the horse's head, tail, and the main body of the horse period) came on sprues very similar. I'll see if I still have the clippings, but I very much doubt I do.
The rest was on the normal pour blocks.
Considering though that the horse doesn't have the slightly rubbery feel of Finecast, I don't know what to make of it. They did mention they retooled a lot of their operation within the past several months, so this might be how.

The bigger stuff, sure. I've got all the pour blocks from my Crassus in a ziploc bag to use as cheap Jersey Barriers when I get to work on my 40k table. Take a pin vice to them, gouge out some pockmarking from firefights, add some paint...voila. You get something from a material that normally would just be trashed.
It also doesn't hurt to keep the thinner bits as if you heat them up or "melt" them down and apply it carefully enough--you can have a good gap filling material.
But really. Look at the sizes of that.
Tell me you wouldn't keep that, slicing off the small Games Workshop copyright and use it for scenery pieces?

I make sure I keep plastic and resin scraps around. Maybe not ALL of them, but they're very useful for everything from carving custom bits out of to using for spacing bits and the like.

Based on my experience so far with Finecast, I would rather buy another metal Terminator Chaplain than another FineCast Terminator Librarian.

Or you would realize before you accuse him of not realizing, that the point of thread as the OP quote says, they are suspecting FW is shown to be casting in similar method now as failcost.

I'd suggest you go back and read his initial comment in the thread. It added nothing to the thread, and really is nothing but spam.
If Forge World was utilizing Finecast, their newest models would be in Finecast. Lietpold the Black is not in Finecast, but did have parts on those same sprues.
Thus I can safely say that UberBeast over at Warseer is wrong. If he actually worked with the models rather than simply assuming that "sprues equals Finecast", he'd have realized it's the same resin as it has been.

Before I get reported again, lets look at the facts.
1) Are the sprue shown infact FW? yep they are DKOK lascannon teams.
2) Are the sprue created same way as usual FW method?
No, infact it looks very very very similar to failcosts.
Or you think its a coincidence beside the 2 points i listed that the title of this thread is also "FW using Finecast"
Nope not a coincidence, and Sicksix is indeed on topic.
YOU might like what he said, but it doesn't make him off topic.

The thread is speculative Kan. You cannot say either way that they definitely are or definitely aren't. It is certainly a change that they've gone from tabs to full blown sprues.

No need HBMC, the picture is pretty obvious, it looks very similar to failcost not the usual FW layout.
he can defend all he wants, but the point still stands.
Method looks like failcost, which raises sicksix's concern. Which is obviously ontopic with this thread.
Whether kanluwen likes how sicksix present his failcost experience DOES NOT make it off topic.
