Hello everyone, I am new to the Dakka community but a frequent visitor. I am working on my collection of Iron Hands Space Marines, Orks, Daemons, Necrons and WFB Skaven. What this thread is about? Request for assistance in painting WH40k and WFB models. The thing is that I have been playing (not frequently) and painting (less frequently) since 2003 with the results not satisfying me. Here is my latest attempt for Imotek the stormlord. I am aware of the misshaped staff and some crums here and there but I was afraid to try and straighten/scratch any more of the necessary as I had already broken the orb on Imotek's head and the orb on his staff, along with his 2 fingers. Thoughts?

Yah know ...that's not a very good picture hah. Can you brighten it up a bit perhaps?

Anyway, the model looks really good to me. Your color scheme is great.

Think this is a bit brighter. But if did brighten it more it really ruins the pic.

Looks pretty good, to me. Sure, the staff is a bit wonky, but it isn't a dealbreaker. There's nothing particularly complex going on, paint-wise, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. You've got enough going on to create some visual interest and that's all - keeps him from being too busy and getting his forms all muddled up.

As for pics, you can only get so far brightening low-res images digitally. Next time you need a clearer shot, take a new pic of the model in better lighting. Looks like you're using a camera phone or a webcam, though, in which case you did better than average.

First of all thanks for the comments. And the sad thruth is that I took the first pic on a 7 MP sony (really old model but still digital). Then I tried to alter the image (hence the second one) with google's Picasa that I 've only used to edit rock and mineral images. Seems like rock picture editing works much better than necron picture editing.

your paints look thinned enough.... but I don't think the blue covered well enough on the chest. Maybe a few more layers needed?

As for the staff... its a bit of a deal breaker IMO. You should try to fix it. If you break it, its because you didn't get it hot enough.

He looks really solid. I would be proud to call him my own. I agree that the blue does look a little splotchy and could use another coat or two. Also base him. If nothing else, base your HQ units. It makes them look that much cooler.

BTW this is the basing tutorial I use. Its pretty simple and makes really good results. Try it out.

The only fault I see with a quick scan of the eye is that the staff should have had the gold layered up from a brown colour.

If you have an area with a lot of gold required, try starting out with a colour like Dark Flesh and then put the gold on there... some people like to highlight their gold with silver too, though I only do that with my Eldar... SMs tend to just be brown 'n' gold.

Edit: No matter what though, a brown wash on the gold when it's done is a *must*
