I got my first model for Christmas last year and finally got around to painting it and I was hoping for some advice.

I also have a few questions:

1. When I painted the Enginseer's legs and arms, I used a paint to make it look like shiny metal, however, it came out to shiny, this was me being stupid and painting with straight paint not watered down at all. How do I fix it, I want it to look like its worn down, not shiny and new.
2. I painted cogs on his robes free handed, is there some tips anyone could give me for getting perfectly straight designs like the cog design?
3. I also have a Commisar Lord, but I dont know what to do with him. Any suggestions? When I get around to builing my IG army, I want the regiment color's to have navy blues and light blues, should the commisar reflect those color's aswell?

You can try adding a wash over the shiny metal bits to tone them down, or a layer of a matt varnish maybe.

For the free hand cogs things, try stenciling out a pattern with pencil first and then use a smaller brush. Also be patient. I suppose another solution would be not to do it.

If you don't like the painting you can strip the paint easily off metal with simple green, usually what i like to do is have all my models primed.. i usually don't paint them YET because i want my entire army ready to be painted so i can paint them all the way i wanted especially if you have a colour scheme in mind.

"Simple green" is sometimes used to strip models of paint. It is best used undiluted. Simply submerge the model in the stuff for 2-4days.

I use La's totally awesome, because I think it works better.

Thats another good question I have: What kind of paints are good?

I try to find paint for as cheap as possible. I have a few called Timiya Color Acrylic Paint and another one that belongs with the Warmachine war game. Something called Formula P3. Or something.

Well it really depends if you're on a buget, craft acrylic paints are good, i use a hybrid scheme of water and oil based, say for testors they have a broad range of military colors that cost a little less, you just need a bit a paint thinner from time to time wich you can find for cheap at hardware stores. go for what you can get itll take some time to get used to it, but any hobby paint is good.

as for making a wash with certain paints
if you got a brown acrylic, put a little into a bottle cap and then mix in water

for oil based pour some into a small jar and then add 5-10 drops of enamle thinner to it usinging a syringe or eye dropper

I'll put my 2 cents in for question number 3.

You can do your more basic troops in the blue and light blue, but keeps your officers and unique special characters in the red/white/black/silver motif you have going on. Or f you want them all to have the same kind of look and colours I would start painting the commisar how you want the rest of your army to look, and then at a later date repaint your engineseer. Better to start planning now because I painted my IG army all different kinds of styles and colours and whatnot and now I kind of wish I had just stuck with one kind of layout/colour scheme.

So decide now how you want it to look and then start painting that way because its going to be a pain to repaint a bunch of things cuz you decided to change the scheme half way thru. Hope this helps a lil.

I am gonna do what you said, make all my special characters their own color schemes. The Techpriest is gonna be the one with the red because those are the color's of the mechanicus. The Commisar I was thinking of giving him some dark clothes.
