So after painting up my first normal Ultramarine the other day I went with some peoples adivce that the armour was a little dull and decided to try some other options.

After a visit to my local hobby shop I found some Tamiya Metallic Blue which I thought looked cool. So I purchased it to give it a try along with some Tamiya Metallic Chrome for highlighting his armor a bit.

The process ended up as:

- Metal Blue Basecoat
- Citadel Blue wash over everything
- Highlight with 50/50 Metal Blue and Chrome.
- A thin Glaze on the bits I wanted to really catch the light with about 1:8 ratio of Metal Blue and Chrome.

I was quite happy with the results in the end. It brightened up the armor and its something a bit different from the usual pure blue. I would have liked a slightly darker shade of blue but I had no Tamiya blue to darken their metal pigments down with and I have read bad things about mixxing Tamiya with anything but other Tamiya paints.

Anyway, some feedback would be awesome guys! Bad or good it all improves my work. Thanks!

Only thing I thought would make it better is some darker lines like on the top armor and in recesses but beyond that, it is amazingly well done!

This is a cool take on the classic ultramarines blue. Your scheme hearkens to the look of the night lords, with the new Legions dex on the horizon you might want to consider switching to chaos!

I think a pure black wash in some of the recesses would help create a little more definition to some armorplates. I'm talking about things like the gaps on top of the armor, or the kneejoints.

Other then that, it's one gorgeous looking model. I think I prefer this blue metallic over the traditional blue even.

Thanks guys! Appreciate the feedback!

There are several flaws to the miniature which I will correct as I go with the others, I got a bit careless with the wash when I applied it and I missed a few spots that should have been hit (like in the grooves above his head on the edge of the helmet, 3 of them got hit with the wash, looks like i missed the other two). These things happen when im batch painting 10 Terminators at once though. When I start my Tacticals I will try a washed down badab black after or before the blue was as well to try shade the depths even more. I also stuffed up the transfer a little, there is a fold in it which happend after I touched the transfer while it was still heat sealing to the shoulder.

@ The Blue Scribes - Haha but I am a loyalist through and through :( I started these marines to have them finished by the new 6th edition ruleset. Where im hoping Codex Marines will be the first released. Another mate of mine said the same thing but about the Thousand Sons.

@Cyrax- I didnt notice this at all until I started painting, I guess I was looking at the minis from the front while gluing and didnt notice till it was too late. I have inspected the rest of the unit and its an isolated case (lucky for me). I'm not sure how it happened, must have just slid foward while the glue was drying.

Wow, that's pretty cool. The color reminds me of an old Mustang I used to have back in high school.

I also like the way those Lightning Claws came out, and how they contrast with the rest of the model.

Great stuff! very refreshing to see that finish on a marine! it reminds me of a site I remember from a few years back called Viva metallica, although he used metallic bases and coloured washes but the result was similar, your blue is a touch more vibrant and really looks great with the matt finish paint on the other details, I look forward to seeing the whole squad done I have a feeling it will be pretty inspiring and may encourage more to try the style!

how long does it take on average for a model to that standard? or are you working on a batch time frame?

Trying to work it out now.

I batch painted all the terminator armour at once, That includes:

- Single coat of blue metal on all
- Heavy blue wash on all of them
-Highlight of the 50/50 mix
-Quick thin glaze of the 8:1 Silver to Blue on the high bits

Which I'd say took me about and hour to hour and a half sitting infront of the minatures. I use a hairdryer to speed the drying process, esp after the washes, which was prob the only time it was really needed.

Then the detailing. There isn't really that much there that's very time consuming. Most of it was spent deciding what colour choices to make. The face took me the longest but I don't paint much skin/hair so I was king of testing a few things as I went.

Ill say it would take 2 to 3 Hours per Terminator since I did the Armour on 10 and 1 detailing in the 4 hours I have from when I get home from work till I goto bed. Batching will speed the process up significantly. I'll try get the other 4 done this afternoon then the next 5 done tomorrow.

I like this take on the Ultramarines color scheme. You see them so often it is refreshing to see them done differently. I think you could use this same scheme, or something close to it, with an Alpha Legion army as well (just at metallic green scales). Nice work.

Its all about what you like at the end of the day, I like this. You dont get to see something like this all the time and it will stand out on the table. Its not over the top or way out there just a bit different. Its not like you tried to reinvent the wheel or break new ground, just a newer take on the old bag, I say well done.

I rather like it though the blue does seem...odd. Perhaps an angle too close to turquoise than blue.

It reminds me very much of a Word Bearers army that I saw on Warseer that was all done in metallics.

That method was a little easier - basically a red ink over a metallic drybrush.

You might want to look at the Vallejo range, I was looking for met red recently and was pointed to their model air series. I've had a quick scan on the Wayland site and come up with this as a possible option though look in to it first as I don't have any experience with the range yet

http://www.waylandgames.co.uk/vallejo-paints/model-air/model-air-green-zinc-chromate/prod_3236.html

Model air is an air brush range, though I've heard of someone using a brush and it worked fine.

Wayland have a free shipping deal on at the moment too, freeshipjan, just fyi.
