Hey im new to fantasy and was looking to make an all troll army with maybe a giant and a couple of shrines about 1500.

I was wondering firstly does the eye of the gods rule from the shrines get denied to trolls?

and secondly whats the army run like?

You run MSU units of trolls and shrines do work on our trolls. Units of about 8 with Throgg work as a smash and run style. Happens to be what I play.
Butler the Pug and RiTides are also Throgg players on here

Oh yeah . Just like Johnny-Crass says! Nice to have several of us on here who run it

Units of 8 is a nice number. Buttler I think used to swear by many units of 6, but I find I always get one caught outside of the leadership bubble of throgg and my general if I have too many units of trolls.

Warshrines do work, I'm just converting 2 to try out with it myself

Keep in mind Throgg has a infinite leadership bubble which is insane in fantasy!

Infinite? He shares his leadership just like a general with monstery-things, so a 12" bubble... still, really helpful since then you can have another model as your general and have 2 bubbles to use.

Ritides reread your Throgg entry it lets all units on his list use his leadership. Keyword ALL

Hmm, I think that's too good to be true, though! The clause "as if he were the army General" just directs you to the main rulebook, where it's within 12". The word "all" just specifies what can use his leadership (monsters and the like).

But back to how competitive they are- imo they're right in the middle of the pack. In tournaments I've been 50/50 or a bit under usually with a throgg-led list. It's got a lot of weaknesses (low initiative, not much static combat res, difficulty keeping your wizard/bsb safe) but a lot of strengths, too! Particularly, having magic vomit attacks might help with the new ethereal VC units coming out

I dont run a mage and just fill it with more trolls.

And I think "as if he were army general" is for things like Pandemonium as if you notice it gives a range for his next ability but not the first. I might put this to YMDC

More trolls is always good . I usually end up dropping whatever extras I can to cram in the most monstrous infantry possible (mixing in some ogres and dragon ogres).

A thread in YMDC for the leadership question sounds good... I'd love to be wrong!

CAn I just ask, is this a low model count army?? Also, would one have to use the Chaos troll minis or would any trolls do??

Yes, it's most definitely a low model count army.

I personally used the O&G river troll models, with minimal conversion, painted in chaos-y colours

Yes it is a low model count.
Most people at my local store use the o&g river trolls.

Infinite ld? My book just says ogres trolls drogers and hounds get to use his ld if they are within 12 inches, check the FAQ.

Overview of the WoC army book.

The reason i ask lads is cause with the new vc's coming out it wont be too hard to convert up the big ghouls into trolls with abit a green stuff

Agreed! And I also use the O&G river trolls

I had the same thought about the new vc's, Gorfan... only bummer is it's $47 for 3 models. But River trolls are I believe $44.50, so only $2.50 really... but at that price the army is rather expensive despite the low model count.

I have a friend that has gotten old O&G stone trolls and converted a bunch of other models (he's really good!), another who uses the old metal Chaos trolls. There's a lot of flexibility here... they're trolls, after all!

It gives his reroll thing a range but not his general bubble Cow, also the Faq does not speak of Throgg

Continuing on the theme, how feasible is mixing Throgg led monsters with units of warriors, knight, chosen etc? The bit in Throggs fluff about him gathering up all the monsters and madmen really is one of my favorites. I'm guessing points (and special slots) would be too tight pull it off right

IMO Throgg does not need warriors but marauder blocks for steadfast are helpful. Dragon Ogres are also helpful and Chaos ogres have nice models (If you use the ogre range)

I know they aren't needed. but I have this great color scheme worked out I was more wondering how workable it is to sneak a unit or two of armored guys in. Also, mages: on their own, on a mount or monster, in a unit of big guys or a possible role for mortals? I figure that expanding the army at some point a magic user becomes useful.

I dont run one as I am a slave to my fluff. But a Heavens mage turns trolls into a nightmare

You can most definitely run a Heavens Mage in a Troll army and maintain the fluffage!

Just gotta think outside the box, and possibly throw him on a Flying Carpet... err... rock.

But yes, I am quite fond of the 6 man units of Trolls, especially if your running a larger sized block of Dragon Ogres (possibly only if your running a big block of Drogres). Its not the most competitive way to play them, but I find it much more fun and maneuverable with the small units.

I am always taking a mage these days- I have several conversions, inspired by Buttler's .

However, I am more and more leaning towards putting my characters back into units. That way, if a troll units gets outside the LD bubbles, I don't become a paperweight. The problem is you have to stick the character on the side of the unit due to different base size.

My current thought is to go with a Daemonic Mount, or Steed of Slaanesh if the model is joining Dragon Ogres (to keep swiftstride). I've gotten the parts for some conversions and will be trying it out (although for my BSB, it's on a mini-rhinox from the scraplauncher kit, and I'm going to use that as a counts-as daemonic mount instead of juggernaut to try it out). I find the juggernaut too much of a liability, as he is forced to overrun

Most of my recent games have been played with characters with MoT riding discs, but it's not quite as convincing having an ogre on a disc (although Buttler's troll-on-rock is quite nice!). Also exposes them to small-arms fire, whereas being joined to a unit doesn't. A new trick I've realized is that in deployment you can join disc-riders to units, then move them away turn 1. Keeps them from getting shot / magicked Quite as easily before you even get to make a move.
